Transcript of Earth art green
4th Grade QuEST
2011-2012
Sculpture: Lincoln to Liberty
Our Inspiration Ever since December,
our focus has been, earth art, earth art, earth art!
Artists like Andy Goldsworthy, Robert Smithson & Sue Lawtyhave shown us a whole different type of art! Inspired by the ephemeral, natural, evanescent works of art.
QuEST kids try to make some earth art of our own!
As Spring Came We
Experimented
We saw Earthart
EVERYWHERE
We combined
Some looked like insects, and
fancy umbrellas
What should we choose?
How should we do it?
We chose earth art because we think that
people should admire the wild life around
us.
We think earth art is an unique way to
express yourself with nature.
This isn’t just for QuEST students, it’s for
everyone. Get outside and spend some
time with nature!
We all explored together
Nests of forget-me-nots
Searching for just the right
combination
Our Process
During the process of our project, sculpture
group realized Earth Art isn’t dainty, clean
or that easy either! We experimented with
many materials, techniques & styles. It took
a long time to find one we liked! We went
from log piling, to pyramids to finally, discs.
Thinking of using logs, we
practiced with straws.
The Birch Tree from Mrs. Hunt’s
yard.
Grape vine from
Ms. Rabinowitz, our consultant.
We loved the “spikey things”
Our proposal to Mrs. Simpson
The stairs represent Bloom’s levels of thinking.
We believe everyone should think a little deeper, which was what Bloom wanted. Not only QuEST kids should follow Bloom’s steps.
We chose the spiral because it is a symbol that has been used for thousands of years. It is the symbol of eternity and everlasting life.
Proposal accepted with
conditions
Meet with WHPS Plant Services Director, Mr. Palmer
Discuss and clear plans
Suggestions were made and supplies donated
IT’S A GO !!!
Spikey figures are so cute.
Simple disks of a fallen birch tree,
grape vines, and spikey things
Location and Materials
We chose the location of the hill because it is a place where everyone can see our masterpiece.
It will be our own way to leave a legacy behind like so many sculptors have before us.
We chose the materials of logs and grape vines because the grape vines are already made into natural spirals, and the logs will be easiest to form naturally into a flower that is stairs.
The gravel arrived
According to plans
We started to dig
After MUCH
digging, see
how it came
out
We scooped handfuls
of gravel onto the weed cloth.
Some of us supervised.
We framed the 4’ X 4’ with Birch
logs and our secret codes.
We cut the “ribbon” with a
bark bow.
We caught the bow.
