Our Earth is a wonderful planet . It is the only planet which has life on it. But the human activities are exploiting the resources of the Earth. One such major resource is WATER which makes the Earth a blue planet. Our activities ruin this resource and also the beauty of the EARTH.

Seeing the waste water of the houses flowing on

the road, the students felt the need to find a

way of proper disposal of waste water . It was

spoiling the look of the surrounding.

Page 4: Earth

We wanted to stop this flowing of the water on the road

Page 5: Earth

This was destroying the scenic beauty of the surrounding and also spreading the diseases like dengue and chikungunya which had become an epidemic in our area.

Page 6: Earth

And then came the idea of

SOAKPIT

Page 7: Earth

We went to the neigbhouring areas and surveyed them.We talked to the residents and collected information about sanitation in their areas. It was found that there was no proper drainage system in any house and the people were not too well-off.

Page 8: Earth

The major cause of the waste water flowing on the road was lack of proper disposal facility.

A soak pit is a tank like structure made in the ground to store the used water. It is structure created in such a way that the used water is collected and slowly it seeps underground. Thus it has several advantages: -

* The waste water is stored at a place, thus maintaining the cleanliness of the surrounding.

•It helps in maintaining the water table as the water is recycled.

•* Prevents the spread of diseases and water pollution

•To convince the people

•The soak pit being a bit expensive and the residents not too well- off

Page 11: Earth

We had to convince the people by making them understand the advantage of soak pit. And luckily we were successful in convincing them.

Page 12: Earth

Our second challenge was the monetary problem. It was not possible for the residents to construct individual soak pits. So we came up the idea of “ 1:5 “. It means a single soak pit should be shared by five families.

And the people accepted our idea heartily.
