In 1618, the headright system was introduced as a means to solve the labor shortage. It provided the following:

Colonists already residing in Virginia were granted two headrights, meaning two tracts of 50 acres each, or a total of 100

acres of land.

New settlers who paid their own passage to Virginia were granted one headright. Since every person who entered the

colony received a headright, families were encouraged to migrate together.

Wealthy individuals could accumulate headrights by paying for the passage of poor individuals. Most of the workers who

entered Virginia under this arrangement came as indentured servants — people who paid for their transportation by

pledging to perform five to seven years of labor for the landowner.

The ability to amass large plots of land by importing workers provided the basis for an emerging aristocracy in Virginia.

Plantation owners were further enriched by receiving headrights for newly imported slaves.

The implementation of the headright system was an important ingredient in Virginia’s success. Land ownership gave many

people a reason to work hard, with the assurance that they were providing for their own futures, not that of the company.

October 26, 1734. Capt. Hennesey, Arrival in (Charleston),SC

"October 26, 1734, arruved on Wednesday, Captain Hennesey from Calais."

Nita Shepard observes;

"It is unfortunate Capt. Hennesy's first name was not given. Calais probably refers to Calais, France. You may remember

that Richard Hennessy left County Cork, Ireland, to join relatives in France to fight against the British. He stayed on in

France. It is from him mainly came the Hennessy Brandy, still well known today. Legend has it that this excellent brandy

came about because a "brew" ws delayed while on board a ship - perhaps Capt. Hennesey's ?? My records have it that

Ricahrd had brothers James and Alexander. These latter 2 brothers are said to have come the the Colonies in 1740,

landing in Norfolk. Alexander was said to be my line. I have not been able to prove this, however...Of extra note, could

Alexander and James have been brought to Norfolk,VA, by Capt. Hennesey ?"

July 09, 1754. Thomas Hennesey, Land Bounty: in Uncited,Uncited

Thomas Hennesey, Private, in the roll of Captain Jacob Van Braam's Company, 9 July 1754, in the Battle of the Meadows

(i.e., Ft. Necessity), taken at Will's Creek, MD, listed as "Fit for Duty" and, in additional records, as having received

"Country's Bounty Money".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Great_Meadows

The Battle of the Great Meadows, also known as the Battle of Fort Necessity was a battle of the French and Indian War

fought on July 3, 1754 in present-day Fayette County, Pennsylvania. It, along with the Battle of Jumonville Glen, are

considered the opening shots of the French and Indian War which would spread to the Old World and become the Seven

Years' War. It marked George Washington's only military surrender.

The battle was the culmination of years of boundary disputes between the British and French Empires in North America.

Principal among the disputed territories was the Ohio Country, an area that includes portions of the present American

states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia.

In the spring of 1754, Virginia's Lt. Governor Robert Dinwiddie ordered militia officer George Washington and 159 men to

aid a building party sent to construct a fort at the Forks of the Ohio River (present Pittsburgh), but the party was

surrounded and forced to return to Virginia before Washington arrived. The French then constructed Fort Duquesne at the

forks of the Ohio.

Washington was sent new orders to construct a wagon road from Wills Creek (present Cumberland, Maryland) into the

Ohio country and await reinforcements. On May 24, 1754, Washington’s party arrived at a marshy clearing at the junction

of two streams in what is now Wharton Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania called the Great Meadows. They set up

camp at the site and explored possible water routes to the Forks of the Ohio while awaiting reinforcements.

THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF'S GUARD

"This famous Revolutionary organization was known popularly as "Washington's Body Guard" and was formed by the

Commander-in-Chief in 1776, while the army was in New York. At first it consisted of 180 men under the command of

Major Caleb Gibbs....every State was represented in the Guard. Its motto was "Conquer or Die".

In 1779, Captain William Colfax succeeded Major Gibbs in the command. They were a picturesque body of men. Their

uniform has been described as consisting of a "a blue coat with white facings, white waistcoats and breeched, black stock

and black half-gaiters, and round hat with a blue and white feather." It was directed that the men were to be "from five feet

eight to five feet ten; age, from twenty to thirty," and were to be "men of established character for sobriety and fidelity.". Dr.

Carlos E. Godfrey, in his history of the organization, gives a list of its members, and from this the following names are

taken:

William Hennessy.

List of Names from British War Department

List compiled by 'The Society Of Old Brooklynites' in 1888.*

"This list of names was copied from the papers of the British War Department. There is nothing to indicate what became of

any of these prisoners, whether they died, escaped, or were exchanged. The list seems to have been carelessly kept, and

is full of obvious mistakes in spelling the names. Yet it shall be given just as it is, except that the names are arranged

differently, for easier reference. This list of prisoners is the only one that could be found in the British War Department.

What became of the lists of prisoners on the many other prison ships, and prisons, used by the English in America, we do

not know."

November 01, 1788. Edward Hennissee, Land Grant: in Allageny/Garrett,Maryland

"In the November session of 1781, the "General Assembly of Maryland" appropriated all the vacant lands Westward of Fort

Cumberland for the benefit of the Maryland soldiers and officers who fought in the Revolution.

The Governor was authorized by the Legislature in April, 1787 to employ a competent person to lay out these lands in lots

of 50 acres each. Frances Deakins was appointed to this position and by 1788 had accomplished the task. An act was

then passed to dispose of these lands by assigning four lots to each officer and one lot to each soldier. This land is located

within the present boundaries of Allegahany and Garrett Counties, Maryland.

All of the lots were not taken up by the men who were assigned them. The Hall of Record in Annapolis, Maryland can

supply more informtion in regard to this matter."
