Early Spring 2014 Y Mayfair volunteers needed! [email protected] A s Camp Director for Mooredale Day Camp, Eric Musselman has had the chance to meet a wide variety of people in the community. One thing is clear – this neighbourhood has been significantly impacted over the years by Mooredale Day Camp. From experiencing camp for the first time, to securing that first summer job – MDC has been developing the children and youth in this community for a long time. Who would have thought it possible that neighbours from Rosedale and Moore Park first began dreaming big about what could happen in this old community house in 1949? Mooredale Day Camp continues to inspire a deep sense of passion that brings people back year after year. When asked why they want to return to work at MDC, here are typical responses from returning staff members: “I loved summer camp as a counsellor. I can’t wait to be back!” “MDC is a terrific environment filled with great experiences. Every morning I was excited to wake up and come to Mooredale.” “I know the camp well – I attended Mooredale summer camp as a preschooler! As an assistant volunteer counsellor I (found I) loved the environment and the opportunity to work with children.” Summer camp season is only a few weeks away and choosing the right camp program for your family can be challenging with so many excellent options to choose from. Mooredale Day Camp has had the pleasure of helping a countless number of neighbourhood children to develop confidence, character and new skills in a community centered environment. We are excited to have key staff like Gnomeo and Piton returning to once again provide a fun filled, quality program. There is still limited space available in our summer sessions. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Community

this word took on particular meaning this month as our Board of Directors, along with

our managerial staff and our Executive Director, dedicated an inspiring day at the Brickworks towards discovering what Mooredale means to each of us and how we intend to keep the true

spirit of our unique community alive and flourishing. There are so many things that we do well at Mooredale to support, encourage and enrich: Mayfair: the ultimate block party! Nowhere is the sense of community more evident than on the second weekend in May when Rosedale Park is transformed into something magical. Mark your calendars this year for ‘A Medieval Mayfair’ on May 9 and 10. Channel your inner King Arthur and Game of Thrones and come on out to greet your neighbours after a long winter! Soccer: Opening day of soccer season has to be one of my most favourite parts of Mooredale. The sight and sound of all those healthy, excited players at Rosedale Park and Riverdale, along with the countless enthusiastic volunteers coaches and our roster of young referees, truly mark the beginning of spring. There is a place for all levels at Mooredale from purely recreational to competitive – and even a vibrant women’s soccer league! Pool: Our pool at Mooredale truly is a hidden gem – and judging by the demand to be part of the ‘club’, it is one of the best places to be on a hot summer day. Even more special is the sound of the youth orchestra as it practices in the Coach House and mingles with the sound of happy swimmers. These things, along with a very special preschool, fantastic program offerings, sports galore, a terrific Day Camp and other initiatives that are currently in the works, make Mooredale such a special place to spend time. It really is a community: a place to gather, support and share one another’s interests and passions. To all of you who give so selflessly of your time to volunteer here at Mooredale – thank you, thank you, thank you. To all of you who wish to contribute in any way, big or small, or simply have suggestions, thoughts, insights– please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you! All the best for a happy, sunny spring,

i love March – especially if the snow melts enough to see the grass! Soon we will have reports of other significant spring sightings: robins back from the south, soft pussy willows in

the playground garden, blooming forsythia bushes everywhere. I love March at Mooredale because there is a welcome break in the regular activities, punctuated by the excitement of our March Break program for kids. If you are looking for five great days of fun for your youngsters, register right away. We have some terrific staff ready to make this March Break a memorable one. I love March because we are in the final stages of the crazy spring registration period for all our soccer, softball, pool, tennis, camp, summer fun, and special spring courses.

Of course, the spring programs were all outlined in the guide, which was mailed to members last February newsletter. For current information about how to participate this Spring, check out our website at www.mooredale.com. I love March because I have a little Irish in me – and it provides a great reason to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with all those who claim to have a little or a lot of Irish in them! I love March because we meet so many new students who want to work at the pool and camp this summer. We are in the midst of hiring counsellors, junior counsellors and lifeguards now, so send your resume along to Mooredale right away! I love March because it’s just two months from Mayfair – the very best day of the year! When you are spring cleaning, keep an eye open for something wonderful for the re-gifting Silent Auction at Mayfair. Here’s to a happy, warm and sun-filled Spring at Mooredale!

A Medieval Mayfair

Rosedale ParkFriday, May 9 andSaturday, May 10

this year’s Mayfair celebrates castles, knights, damsels and dragons. You could meet wandering minstrels and jugglers, and watch out for sorcerers and giants! Kids, dress up in your

“medieval” costume for the Saturday parades!

Rides, Games, and Fun!Step right up… the folks at World’s Finest Shows have promised us their best carnival rides ever! The Midway will have tons of great games! Feed the Monkey will be back, and so will Kick and Score Soccer, Hockey Slapshot, the Kiddie Striker Alligator and many, many more. Also back again, the Caribbean Limbo – how low can you go? As always, there will be great prizes for the Midway games.

Kiddie ZoneParents with younger kids will want to check out the fabulous Kiddie Zone inside the rink! Attractions will include the Medieval Castle Fun Centre, Shrek’s 5-in-1 Playground, and the Kiddie Korner Obstacle Course – and also that Mayfair classic, the Fish Pond.

The Enchanted Castle will be in the Kiddie Zone, where your little ones can climb in– and pose for your smartphone! You’ll also find Wacky Hair and Face Painting inside the rink. The Mayfair Regifting Silent Auction will be in the rink again on Saturday, the perfect place to find treasures for Mother’s Day, great deals on regifting items, and some very special donations. (There will also be a Friday evening Silent Auction, with items on display at the Beer Garden.) Mayfair Bingo will be back, and each game will feature special prizes! The Track and Field competition offers races and prizes for ages 1 to 13. All that fun works up an appetite – so pace yourself, with tasty barbecued burgers and hot dogs, candy floss, fries, the Steam Whistle Beer Garden, scrumptious home baking, and Starbucks coffee!

Mayfair’s Eve PreviewThe four-hour preview runs from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9th. Use the Ride-all-day bracelets for Friday evening as well as Saturday. Our barbecues will be fired up, and the Steam Whistle Beer Garden will be ready! Make this a perfect evening… Take the kids to try out the rides, then bring everyone over to enjoy a BBQ dinner at the beer garden… no cover, kids allowed (SmartServe rules will be strictly enforced!) There’ll be a mellow jazz combo on the main stage – it’s the ideal place to meet up with friends and neighbours!

NOTE: Friday evening is just a preview, with rides, food and drink, and the silent auction. You’ll also be able to buy tickets for the Mayfair Raffle on Friday (making sure you’re in all the draws for the terrific prizes on Saturday!) For the full Mayfair experience, come back Saturday!

Ride-all-day BraceletsYou can save big with Mayfair Ride Bracelets! For only $35, your child can ride all day on all the mechanical rides from World’s Finest Shows. (Includes unlimited rides on Friday evening too!) Bracelet vouchers are available by advance sale for two weeks only, from April 23rd to May 7th. They can be purchased at Summerhill Market, or at the Mooredale office.

Free Bike Valet ParkingThe whole family can bike to Mayfair! The Bike Valet Parking

enclosure is located at the southeast corner of the park (at Scholfield Avenue). The service is free, and you can check strollers, too.

The Regifting Silent Auction

at MayfairThis year, regift your unused, unopenedor duplicate gifts and treasures. We want your donations! We want tickets to events you can’t attend, certificates for services you offer. We want those games your children didn’t play with, the toys they didn’t get to open. We want that lovely piece of china, silver or jewelry that doesn’t really suit your style, that hostess gift, that set of glasses, that handsome coffee-table book or art. These items are all perfect for the Mayfair Silent Auction. The Silent Auction has had many creative and innovative donations. An example was the backyard play structure that one Mooredale family had outgrown and another was ready to grow into, reusing at its finest! We offered all-day parking near Rosedale Park (for Mayfair), spa and food gift certificates, and many items suitable for Mothers’ Day. Winning bidders went away delighted with their great finds! Donation drop off is from April 1st to May 1st, on the front porch at 163 Crescent Road (the home of Eleonora and Mark Van Orman, just across from Mooredale House.) You’ll find a large box to put your donation into, and we’ll check it every day! If your item is too big, take a picture and email it to me so we can discuss the best way to present your donation. If you have any questions about what we want or how to donate your items, contact Eleonora Van Orman at 416-944-9777 or email to [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your terrific support!

IT’S BACK!Mayfair’s EvePreview5pm to 9pm Friday eveningrides – BBQ – Beer Garden

• BONUS – Redeem your voucher for your ride bracelet on Friday, get unlimited rides till 9 pm PLUS all day Saturday!

Have you volunteered your two hours yet?Think about it. Mayfair is your community fair. Everyone’s there… kids from all the schools, families from all the streets. With all the hundreds of neighbours who are flipping burgers, selling tickets, staffing the games tents, baking and bingo, shouldn’t you be part of it too? It’s a lot of fun, and a nice way to give back a little. It’s also a great way for teens to earn community service hours. Call our volunteer hotline, 416-922-3714, ext. 310. Or email us at [email protected].

Spring and Summer Recreation Programs

Believe it or not, no matter what the groundhogs say, this winter will eventually end! The snow will disappear, the days will get longer, warmer weather will return, trees

will bud and the grass will green up. Now is the best time to start planning your spring and summer activities here at Mooredale as the spring program and sport season starts in just a few weeks.

Why Mooredale?

Even if you only spend a short amount of time around Mooredale, you can’t help but notice certain themes come up over and over again. It is common to hear words like ‘family’ and ‘community’ when people describe why they are attracted to Mooredale and the various programs, clubs, and special events (like Mayfair!). There is a ‘small-town’, nostalgic quality to Mooredale that offers local residents an invitation to become part of something that is counter-cultural to our fast-paced, win-at-all-costs world. We invite you and your family to become members of “Toronto’s best kept secret”! There is an excerpt from Silken Laumann’s book Child’s Play which helps sums up what we believe Mooredale can be for our community:

“This is my dream. I want to be a part of a community where children play in the parks and driveways and schoolyards. I want our children to be vibrant and healthy, to have energy and imagination and a sense of community. I want to live in a country whose greatest strength is the relationship between its citizens, where we know each other and watch each other’s kids, where we meet in the common spaces of our neighbourhoods to talk and share our joys and challenges.”

Mooredale has had the privilege of being a common space where neighbourhood relationships have grown and developed for many years, and we look forward to continuing to be that place in this community for many more years to come!

Spring and Summer Activities @ Mooredale

Seasonal Programs

Your program committee has put together a wide variety of programs to choose from for children, youth and adults. The full spring program guide can be viewed at www.Mooredale.com/programs. Alternatively, you can drop by the Mooredale House main office and pick up your own copy. Registration can be done online or by sending a hard copy to Mooredale House.

Mooredale Sports

Registration for our spring and summer Soccer, Softball and Cheerleading programs are now open. Visit www.mooredale.com/sports to discover the many options available for the whole family. Not only are there opportunities for being a part of the team, but there are a variety of employment and volunteer opportunities for youth and adults. For the past 55 years, Mooredale has offered members the same memorable experience: the opportunity to be part of a non-competitive team, where winning is always second to having fun. Sign up today to “get into the action, to get into the game, and to get into the fun”!

Summer Camps

registration for day Camp (4-12 yrs.) is well underway. Several key leadership staff including Erin (Gnomeo) and Jessica (Piton) are back on board and have begun making plans for this coming summers programs. With a wide variety of activities, day trips, theme days, twice-a-day swimming, and specialty options (like tennis!) for our senior campers – you’ll soon discover why Mooredale Day Camp is the community choice for summer time play and recreation.

Summer Fun (2.5 – 3.11 yrs.) program is operated by Mooredale’s licensed Pre-school and is a great introduction to camp with low camper/staff ratios, healthy snacks, structured play times, and a chance to swim, one-on-one ratio, in the Mooredale pool!

Register today for all our camp programs at www.mooredale.com/camps.

Saturday May 17!

i don’t care what the groundhog says – I’m ready for our pool’s opening day right now!

After such our great 2013 season we are thrilled that Pool Manager Stephanie Chu and many of our team leaders and lifeguard/Instructors return for 2014.

Joining Stephanie are some familiar faces – Assistant Managers Matthew Currie and Katie Glass with Shift Leaders Sean Banting and Hanna Grover. Most Pool Club members took advantage of the “Early Bird” renewal and are ready for the season. If you have yet to renew, remember that the last day on which 2013 members can renew their Pool Club membership for 2014 is Tuesday, April 1st. After this date, the your Association offers any remaining spaces to individuals and families on the waiting list – please remember, we are not able to accommodate any member who misses this final deadline. If you are on the waiting list now, you’ll be glad to know that almost all members on the list from the previous year managed to join in 2013. To other Mooredale Members: if you are not currently a Pool Club member and are thinking of joining, contact Stephanie Chu (schu@mooredale. on.ca 416.922.3714 x 100) and get on the waiting list today – there is no cost to be on the list and, of course, no obligation to join. Please note that the wait can be significant and it is possible that you may be on the waiting list for more than

a year before receiving a notice inviting you to join the club. But the sooner you get on the list the sooner you’ll join the pool. We’re putting the final touches on our programs for the upcoming season and planning a variety of lessons and activities to meet the needs of our diverse membership. As always if you have any comments or suggestions regarding our programs or how we run the pool, please contact the our Pool Manager Stephanie Chu ([email protected] 416.922.3714 x 100). Don’t listen to the groundhog! Set your bathing suits, towels, goggles and membership cards right where you can find them for opening day. See you in the pool!
