Application/Assessment Process?
• Every summer students interested in attending college early at Cal State L.A. sample EEP life during the summer in the Honors Academy.
• This time period allows students/parents & the university the opportunity to assess EEP fit without sacrificing traditional school time.
What are we assessing?
• Readiness: Is the student ready to take responsibility for their learning in a university? Are they ready for a University experience socially, developmentally, etc..?
• Motivation: Will a student be motivated to learn in a college environment and to be actively involved in EEP, Honors, and Cal State L.A. Community?
• Ability to Benefit and Contribute: Will a student benefit from radical acceleration? (High School is beneficial for most students, gifted or otherwise-Not just CAN YOU but SHOULD YOU accelerate.)
What are you assessing? • Is the student happy in EEP? Does he or she find
herself in a cohort of supportive peers? • Is the student challenged and excited about
college-level coursework and assignments? • Is the student capable of functioning
independently and responsibly in a college environment?
• Is this a better fit than high school? Why or why not?
• Other? What are your own criteria? These are equally important!
A Few Thought for Parents
• It is advisable to assess your student as we might. • Allow them the opportunity to follow instructions, ask
questions, make decisions. This is a growth opportunity for the students.
• Allow students to make mistakes and learn from them. Overcome the often overwhelming parental desire to do student’s work.
• When parents do homework for Provies, neither the Program nor parents gather accurate information about Readiness. Lose-Lose

Engagement is Involvement Being involved in school leads to Success
Tips for Students: Be Engaged
• Students should immerse themselves in Academy Life. Since the Academy is modeled after a college experience, the Academy does not have mandatory school hours (8-5).
• Students should make social, intellectual and academic connections.
• Mentors can help Academy students discover life on campus and find ways to make the most of their time.
How students spend their time when they are not in class:
1. Schedule additional interviews and assessments
2. Attend presentations
3. Ask Mentors questions
4. Explore the campus
5. Meet with faculty
6. Form study groups
