Warmth-Coldness

Warmth parents are affectionate toward their children.

Cold parents may not enjoy being with their children and may have a few feelings of affection for them.

Restrictiveness-Permissiveness

Restrictive parents tend to impose rules and to watch their children closely.

Permissive parents impose few rules and supervise children less closely.

How Parents Enforce Restrictions

Parents tend to use the methods of induction, power assertion, and withdrawal of love.

Inductive Methods

Aim to impart knowledge that will enable children to generate disable behavior. The main inductive technique is reasoning or explaining why kind of behavior is good and another is bad.


Inductive ReasoningInductive methods attempt to teach children the principles they use in guiding their own

behavior.

Power-Assertive

Methods include physical punishment and denial privileges.

Ex. Parental punishment and rejection


Withdrawal of love

Some parents control children by threatening them with withdrawal of love.

Ex. Parents isolate or ignore misbehaving children.


Parenting Styles: (How Parents Transmit Values and Standards)

Authoritative Parents, a child raring style in which parents are restrictive and demanding yet communicative and warm.

Ex. They make strong efforts to control their children . However, they also reason with their children and show them strong support and feelings of love.

Authoritarian Parents, have strict guidelines for right and wrong, their enforcement methods rely on force.


Permissive Parents2 Types

Permissive-Indulgent, a child rearing style in which parents are not controlling and restrictive but are warm.

Rejecting-neglecting, a child rearing style in which parents are neither restrictive and controlling nor supportive and responsive.


Effects of the Situation and the Child on Parenting Styles

Influence of Siblings

Siblings make a unique contribution to one another’s social, emotional, and cognitive development.


Adjusting to the Birth of a Sibling

The birth of a sister or brother is often a source of stress for young children because of changes in family relationships and the environment.

Regression

A return to behaviors characteristic of earlier stages of development.

Ex. Babyish behavior such as increased clinging, crying, anger and naughtiness.

Sibling Rivalry

Jealousy and rivalry among brothers and sisters.
