We offer a wide choice of non-illuminated and illuminatedpushbuttons, indicators, keylocks, selector switches, interlockingswitches and Emergency-stops.Our LED and lamp-illuminatedpushbuttons are available withcircular, square and rectangularhead shapes, mounted eitherraised or flush to the panel.

EAO can supply 16mm switchessealed up to IP65 and approved toa range of standards includingUL/UR, CE and ENEC. We alsooffer an extensive range ofcustomer options.

Our switches are ideal for retro-fitting existing control panels or fornew designs in the machinery,process-control equipment andinstrumentation industries.

EAO products are available througha global network of sales agentsand distributors that cover morethan 50 countries, making us oneof the world’s largest manufacturersand suppliers in the 16mm market.

So even if your regular 16mmsupplier can no longer supply, youcan be sure that EAO will keep ondelivering high-quality products forindustry to rely on.

As people become moreintegrated with their machinesby sight, sound and touch, theneed for user-friendly controlpanels becomes crucial.

New HMI innovations like wireless,voice-activated headsets allowusers to move between machinesor control them from hundreds ofmetres away; users can retrieveeven more data from theirmachines when coupled to newsoftware-/hardware-based systemsthat utilise multimedia interfacesand touch-screen displays. But arethere any drawbacks?

When Human Machine Interfacesystems become increasingly morecomplex, the need for welldesigned controls becomes moreimportant too. Put another way, it’simportant that creators of HMIarchitecture don’t forget the‘human’ element from the equation.

Virtual environments where usersscroll through commands onscreen can be complicated andtime consuming to navigate, particularly for repetitive actions. They are unresponsive too, providing no reassuring tactile-feedback for the operators toindicate their status; touch-screenvisibility can be a problem in poorlight conditions.

At EAO, we believe that thecornerstone of good HMI design isstill at the point of contact betweenthe user and machine. If a functionis controlled by an illuminatedpushbutton, for example, theoperator can quickly establish thestatus of a control by looking for aparticular coloured light.

So EAO’s message is simple:when purchasing a new HMIsystem, please remember thehuman who has to use it.

Tell the whole story in one switch

Do you need a switch that’s immediatelyrecognisable as a control, even by thepartially-sighted, and designed toencourage use? EAO, the experts inHuman Machine Interfaces, presents theSeries 56 – a pushbutton that tells thewhole story in one switch.

With it’s bright front bezel which can becomplemented with braille text, LED‘halo’ illumination and a large touch-surface which can be supplied with arange of raised symbols, the Series 56 isideal for catching the eye and focussingattention on a particular control.

These raised symbols are an excellentway of defining the switch function; EAOoffers a wide choice as standard, including ‘Door Open/Close’, Up/Down,Lock/Unlock. For extra impact, the lensescan be coloured red, green, blue, yellowor natural silver to enhance the displaysof the symbols.

The tough thermoplastic housing, metallens and IP67 protection from the frontmakes the Series 56 one of our mostrugged products. It is vandal-resistantand can be used inside or outside fornumerous applications including door

controls, toilet controls (Door Open,Lock, Flush), emergency HELP! pointsand wheelchair-ramp controls.

The low actuation force makes thisswitch suitable for use by disabled users. The brightly coloured, contrasting bezel with braille text and‘halo’ illumination helps identify thetouch area for partially-sighted users.

Connexcustomer project

Coming soon…a new Series 56 indicator

Fully-wired custom panel created for accessing train doors

To build non-standard products, youhave to be a non-standard company. Youmust be able to develop commerciallyviable solutions to meet your customer’sunique needs and deliver themwhenever they require them, howeverthey require them – on time. In short, youneed to be a specialist.

EAO is a specialist in customer projectengineering, which is why we werechosen by UK train operators, Connex, for a major train refurbishment project. Itwould involve high volumes ofproduction and strict terms andconditions for delivery, and, of course,‘time was of the essence’.

‘Customers demand out-of-the-boxdelivery’ Connex were using Class465 electric trains manufacturedbetween 1992 and 1995. They wereexperiencing problems with the doorcontrols, which were failing due tobroken filament bulbs and switchingelements. The bulbs were having to bereplaced regularly which meant the trainwould have to be taken out of service, sometimes resulting in large fines fromthe track owners.

EAO recommended their market-leadingSeries 56 door-opening pushbuttonsthat use LEDs instead of filament bulbs.

Connex were impressed by the attractivedesign but needed more than just astandard product; they wanted acomplete ‘plug and play’ panel of ‘open’and ‘close’ pushbuttons and an ‘out ofservice’ indicator, delivered with the rightconnections and ready to install straightfrom the box.

EAO demonstrated high levels ofcustomer care from the initialconsultation to final delivery, workingpatiently with Connex to develop a panelto fit their demanding requirements. Thisincluded providing extensive technicalsupport, the development and iterationsof the drawings, samples of workingprototypes, and samples for trialinstallations. Regular meetings were heldwith Connex, often on-site, to prove thatthe panel could be installed withoutproblems.

‘To do specials, you have to bespecial’ Products used in the railindustry must be rigorously tested forsafety and reliability to comply withnumerous rail directives, including theRail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations.EAO not only met these demands buthelped advise on them. Using the factoryin Switzerland, famous for its attention todetail, EAO hand-tested every panel toensure quality control, checking both

technical characteristics and aestheticones too - even the density andsmoothness of the engraved ‘dooropen/close’ legends had to be perfectbefore EAO would pass it.

Connex’s delivery requirements wereequally demanding: 9600 panelsneeded to be delivered over 25 weeks, with weekly quantities varying accordingto their refurbishment schedule.

This project was a complete successbecause EAO is a company built oncustomer-orientated processes ratherthan a supplier of standard products thatalso ‘does specials’.

EAO believes that to do specials, youhave to be special.
