Dates to remember:
Eamon Hannan – Principal
Year 12 students begin their final exams on Friday. These exams are essential for students to
complete their courses and some students final results can be impacted by their performance in
these papers. These school based exams replace statewide exams in other jurisdictions such as
NSW. Students must follow all exam procedures and be available to come into school to
complete assessment including assignments if required by the college during the exam period.
Showcase
Last Friday night the college’s annual Showcase Cultural awards night was held. It was a great
celebration of the cultural life of the college. Congratulations to all award winners published
inside. Thank you to our guest presenter Joel Bow and all groups who entertained us.
Congratulations to Ms Sarah Regan and all staff, volunteers and students for a great evening.
Annual Sports Dinner
This Friday (7th November) we celebrate the sporting life of the school at the annual Sports
Dinner. As well as presenting sport awards we will hear from Troy Bayliss as our guest speaker
for the sports dinner. Troy is a three time World Champion in World Superbikes. Tickets will
be available at reception until lunch time Thursday.
Valedictory and Graduation
The year 12 Valedictory evening is coming up on Monday 17 November at the MECC. The
Year 12 Graduation Mass is on Friday 21 November at 10:00 am. As I mentioned last week it is
at a later start this year than in previous years as Monsignor John Grace (Vicar General) will
lead us in the celebration and he has to travel from Rockhampton that morning. Even though
the focus of these events is the Senior students, parents of Year 11 students and Year 11 students
are also very welcome to attend.
Semi-formal
Last Thursday parents of students in Year 11 received information about Leadership week (the
last week of school for year 11) at the college which culminates with the Semi-Formal. To
participate in the Semi-Formal students are required to attend all days of the Leadership
Program. The letter also gave details about the Year 11 Semi-formal which is on the last day of
term 28th November. Please contact the office if you did not receive this letter.
P & F Meeting
There will be a Parents and Friends Meeting on Wednesday 12 November commencing at
6:00 pm in the College Board room.
St Pat’s Family
On Sunday 16 November one of our young musicians,
Demetry Malahoff will be holding a launch show for his
debut EP Pretty Mind. Demetry has been performing in and
around Mackay for the past two years and he’s been writing
his own music for just over a year. In July of this year he
travelled to Brisbane to record his five-track EP that features
songs that expose Demetry’s innermost thoughts to the
world for the first time. His free launch show will take
place at Mojo’s Ambassador Lounge from 4:00 pm – 7:00
pm on Sunday 16 November. Help support young local music while enjoying free
entertainment from Kalam Hargreaves, Demetry Malahoff and his band.
Congratulations to Year 12 student Samantha Stratton who has been
accepted to study in the Bachelor of Musical Theatre course at Griffiths
University. Four hundred people auditioned for this course with only 30
being accepted. Well done Samantha!

Lesley Fraser – Assistant to the Principal: Religious Education
There will be mixed feelings as we experience the graduation of our senior students in a few
weeks. It is a time that can be filled with sadness for what we leave behind and joy in
anticipation of the future. These young people, while receiving much have also given much
and have helped shape the spirit which is uniquely St Patrick’s. Each year, students speak of
the challenges which their final year has brought, the assignment preparation, the grappling
with new concepts, the exams, the unknowing of all that the future will bring, but, they also
speak of the joys of the year. The sense of fulfilment, the support from family, friends and
teachers. The new and stronger friendships forged, sometimes in the cauldron of powerful life
challenges. Some of these significant milestones for our Year 12 students will be celebrated
with their final college assembly and Graduation Mass. We all look forward to these
celebrations and the opportunity to bid these fine young people farewell. I speak for all the
teachers at St Patrick’s when I say that we have faith in our Year 12 students that after many
years of Catholic Education, they too, have a belief in God, the goodness of humanity and
hope for the future.
In his stirring homily at the final World Youth Day Mass in Madrid, Pope Benedict issued a
challenge to the young people of today, a challenge which is offered to all who have
graduated and are moving to a new stage in their lives....
Dear young friends, as the Successor of Peter, let me urge you to strengthen this
faith which has been handed down to us from the time of the Apostles. Make
Christ, the Son of God, the centre of your life. But let me also remind you that
following Jesus in faith means walking at his side in the communion of the
Church. We cannot follow Jesus on our own. Anyone who would be tempted
to do so “on his own”, or to approach the life of faith with kind of
individualism so prevalent today, will risk never truly encountering Jesus, or will
end up following a counterfeit Jesus.
Having faith means drawing support from the faith of your brothers and sisters,
even as your own faith serves as a support for the faith of others. I ask you, dear
friends, to love the Church which brought you to birth in the faith, which helped
you to grow in the knowledge of Christ and which led you to discover the
beauty of his love. Growing in friendship with Christ necessarily means
recognizing the importance of joyful participation in the life of your parishes,
communities and movements, as well as the celebration of Sunday Mass,
frequent reception of the sacrament of Reconciliation, and the cultivation of
personal prayer and meditation on God’s word.
Friendship with Jesus will also lead you to bear witness to the faith wherever
you are, even when it meets with rejection or indifference. We cannot
encounter Christ and not want to make him known to others. So do not keep
Christ to yourselves! Share with others the joy of your faith. The world needs
the witness of your faith, it surely needs God.
In the spirit of Pope Benedict’s challenge, we invite our graduating students to reflect upon and
make his words their own. “I am with you always…to the end of time.”
Year 11 Leadership Week
We lead by walking with others – Leadership week represents an opportunity to take time to
look towards the year ahead as seniors and to discover the meaning of leadership, to consider
role models of leadership, to practice the skills of leadership and to plan for the year’s events.
At the end of Leadership week on Friday the 28th November we hold a Christmas Liturgy with
the students and traditionally they give to the Christmas Appeal for the St Vincent de Paul
Society. If you can help by sending in canned goods, toys, Christmas cakes, bon bons or any
other goods that might help a family at Christmas time – we would be grateful.

Early release of QCS Test student grades
We have been informed by the QCAA that for the first time, students’ QCS Test results will be
released prior to senior certification in December. Students can access their individual result
from 9:00 am on Tuesday 18 November via their learning account on the Student Connect
website: www.studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au
Release of Year 12 Results for 2014
All Year 12 students need to take notice of the following information:
Exam Procedure – students
1. Read your exam timetable carefully and note all exams. This is YOUR responsibility.
2. Turn up in plenty of time – half hour before most exams or at 8.25 am for morning
exams.
3. Wear full academic uniform.
4. Phone the college if you are going to be late or are ill. Illness will usually require a
medical certificate to be presented when you return to school. You will still be required
to complete the exam.
5. Bring all necessary equipment – spare pens, calculators, rulers, erasers, extra batteries etc
in a clear container. You will not be allowed to borrow anything during the exams. Do
not bring other materials into the exam.
6. When called over the PA, line up in classes in alphabetical order so that rolls can be
marked. This order is also the order that you will sit in for the exam. Follow teacher
directions.
7. Dispose of any study notes before you enter the exam room.
8. Once you enter the exam room you must remain silent and not communicate with any
other student in any way. TO DISRUPT AN EXAM IS A SERIOUS BREACH OF THE
COLLEGE BEHAVIOUR CODE.
9. During perusal, you may not write your answers, but, in some subjects, you may be able
to write notes on the exam. Remember perusal means read thoroughly, not skim.
10. Read the whole paper during perusal and ask questions at that time.
11. Do not ask teachers how to answer questions – they cannot tell you and it wastes your
valuable time.
12. At St Patrick’s you may not leave the exam room until the set time, ie the end of the
exam.
13. No food is to be taken into exam rooms and water bottles must be kept on the floor.
14. If you wish to speak to a supervisor you must stand in your place. Do NOT raise your
hand.
15. MP3s, iPods, Mobile Phones etc are strictly forbidden in the exam room at all times.
16. We are under State and National requirements for the qualifications gained by senior
assessment including exams – these require the college to conduct exams under strict,
secure, ethical conditions.
17. Rearranging an exam can only be done under very exceptional circumstances which
MUST be disclosed to the Administration of the college – it is not desirable because of
the reasons stated above.
18. SCHOOL NOTICES will be posted on noticeboards each day. Please check these for any
important information.
Cultural Showcase
Congratulations to Miss Sarah Regan on the running of her first Cultural Showcase at St
Patrick’s. Congratulations also to our very talented Cultural and Hospitality students (under the
direction of Ms Jodie Zahmel) for their contributions to the very successful evening.
Want your results and OP online?
All results contributing to the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and OPs will be available in students’ learning accounts on the Student Connect website: https://studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au from 9:00 am on Saturday 20 December 2014. Students must know their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password to log in and check their results. Students will be able to access their results more quickly if they have previously activated their learning account. Students will begin receiving their Senior Education Profile in the mail from Monday 22 December 2014.

That’s correct! For 2015, St Patrick’s College is offering its students a once-in-a-lifetime trip to

possibly meet with Fr Andrew Chase and tour the city whilst partaking in choral and drama
workshops. The next stop is Vienna, where we will visit Haus der Musik and Mozarthaus, and
be treated to an evening performance at Konzerthaus. After Vienna, we will have a jaw-
dropping walking tour of Old Prague with an evening performance. From there, we will take
the scenic drive up to Leipzig, visit the Mendelssohn house museum, and watch performances
of the St Thomas Church Choir and “West Side Story” by the Leipzig Ballet Company. Next,
we will fly over to London from Berlin, where we will visit Stratford and the Globe Theatre
for drama workshops, and watch world-class music theatre on West End.
More details about the trip, including costs and timetabling, are currently being finalised and

Mackay AFL Open School Competition (Semifinals/Grand finals)
Congratulations to the St Pat’s Girls Australian
Rules team who has been crowned Mackay
Schoolgirls champion after accounting for Mirani
High School 21 - 0 in the semifinal and
Whitsunday Anglican 11 - 0 in the final after the
game was stopped with two minutes remaining
after an electrical storm made playing conditions
too dangerous. The girls were accurate in their
kicking and dominated field position which
restricted their opponents from scoring, both in
the semifinal and grand final. Katie Muscat from
Mercy College was named ‘Best on Ground’ as she
created many scoring opportunities and tackled
her opponents tirelessly. Other players who stood out included Lauren Connor, Shakira
Williams, Jordan Nixon (nice goal Jordan) and Josephine Dodds. Congratulations to all
players, Mr Russell French and Mrs Cathie Williams on what has been another successful season
of Australian Rules.
The St Pat’s Open boys’ team have qualified for the Mackay Schoolboys grand final after
winning a very closely contested semi-final against Pioneer High School. Despite our boys
creating many scoring opportunities, we were unable to kick goals but amassed 11 behinds to
trail Pioneer by 4 points with less than two minutes remaining. The pressure was intense for
both teams and it was Nicholas Kempe who kicked a 40 metre goal to take the team through
~ 9 ~
to the grandfinal. Other standout players included Braden De Angelis, Connor Wilton,
Matthew Oakford and William Southwood. Unfortunately, the grand final was unable to be
played as a result of the poor weather conditions and an alternative date is still being
negotiated. Congratulation to our boys on qualifying for the grand final that will be played
against Mackay North High School.
Queensland Track & Field Selection
Congratulations to Year 12 student, Carl Story who has been selected in
the Queensland track and field team that will compete at the national
titles in Adelaide in December. Carl qualified for this team after placing
third at the State titles in the 2000m Steeplechase.

Derdziak, Rhiannon Healy and Lauren Burt who represented St Patrick’s College in the
graduation ceremony. Unfortunately Savannah Taylor and Shanayla Parker were unable to
attend. Congratulations also to Miss Bree Sinn who supported the students in this celebration.
The year 12 students were supported in this celebration by two Year 11 students - Shakira
Williams and Jdyne Duffin Wallace.
Towards the State Election 2015 - Key Issue 2 Increased capital funding to help meet the schooling needs of Queensland’s growing population Demand for places in Queensland Catholic schools is projected to increase by around 60,000 students between 2011 and 2031. This will require the development of 2-3 new schools every year and the expansion of many others. The Catholic sector cannot keep pace with this level of growth under current capital funding arrangements. The Catholic community purchases land for school sites and also contributes an average of 23% to the cost of construction of new schools, therefore saving the Queensland Government significant amounts of money. Catholic education also has a strong track record of delivering new school facilities successfully and efficiently. Catholic education is therefore seeking a commitment from the next Queensland Government to: develop partnership plans to help deliver all of the school infrastructure required
provide a capital grants program that reflects the real cost of delivering the additional school places, including an appropriate share of the planned $1 billion Future Schools Fund under the Strong Choices Investment Program.
Click here to read more information about capital funding for Catholic education including the location of high enrolment growth areas of the state. or visit www.qcec.catholic.edu.au or www.pandf.org.au and follow the state election links to find out more detail.
