Hello EM!

What a start to the summer this has been! In the past 2 weeks we

have been able to have some of our favorite EM memories with a

twist! Our annual 4th of July parade this year looked a little different

as cars traveled all around the lake! I loved seeing everyone spread

out around the lake with their masks and signs to celebrate the 4th!

We also had our first ever EMAA Sports Week Bingo! I loved being

able to see all of the different things you did with your families since we did not have the traditional

Sports Week! Many people evolved and adapted their favorite events like doing pull-ups on the

side of their porch or tossing a giant Scottish Stone into the creek at Worlds End State Park! I

loved that everyone participated in this event and demonstrated their Eagles Mere Spirit in new

and exciting ways!

As we begin some in person events, please remember that this summer is all about flexibility! We

will be posting a daily schedule on Facebook as well as on Whiteboards at the beach and in town.

We have some enhanced cleaning and safety procedures, so please do not send any kid to an

activity who is not feeling well or who has a fever. If someone in your household is also feeling

sick, please do not send the kids, even if they are feeling fine! We will be sanitizing all of the

equipment before and requiring hand sanitizing before each event and ask that kids wear masks

while participating, when appropriate. Please also know that we are here to make sure that every

youth has an enjoyable time on the mountain, but we will not be able to have some of the events

that everyone knows and loves.

This is certainly going to be a summer that everyone will remember, but I am glad that I will see

everyone at the FOD in the coming days! As always, there is NO whining in Eagles Mere!

Stay Safe,

~ MC

Hi Mountaingoers!

The first few weeks, though different, have been sunny, rejuvenating,

and endearing. While the program started post July 4th, rather than the

end of June, I have still seen familiar faces and felt the Eagles Mere en-

ergies that make this mountain so special. From the blossom of new

friendships, to the echoes of youthful laughter, Eagles Mere has found

a way to rebirth the traditional elements that circulate through the

mountain air. I have witnessed some of the forgotten beauties resurface

and ground us all in the EM we know and love as new normals begin to

form.

Witnessing the new bonds being made and the kids becoming creative

in finding their own fun, I began to reflect on what I used to fill my days with as a child (though my

parents might argue, I still am and will always be.) I thought I would share some of the unpro-

grammed fun I would find myself in throughout my summers growing up in the mere.

1. Bike rides through the park: we would ride laps until we couldn’t count any higher.

2. Red Arrow adventures: from hikes to girl hangouts at Fat Man Squeeze.

3. Laurel Path Walks: Each loop seemed more magical than the last. Imagination truly is an incredi-

ble thing.

4. Beach Forts: With beach chairs and towels, we built homes and fortresses.

5. Skipping Rocks: Search for the flattest rocks, and safely practice your skipping powers.

6. Kayak Adventures: A leisurely way to chit chat with the gals and day dream of the future.

7. World Cup: (This is not the version that we all so badly miss this summer.) I won’t go deep into

the rules, but find me on the beach and I will tell you all you need to know about the Pele Ball

magic on the Field of Dreams.

I am sure the list of funtivities we invented in our young minds could go on. And while we all partici-

pated in the EMAA events that took place, we also were able to find our own entertainment. I am

finding such beauty, optimism and peace in existing in a back-to-basics summer where children are

(re)connecting and re-grounding us all in the values, morals, and experiences that exist at this sanc-

tuary's core.

With smiles,

Winini

Hello all you Eagles!

It’s truly hard to believe that we are in mid-July already! Although the EMAA summer had a delayed start, we

are so happy to have our athletic program up and running.

We had a staff party on Tuesday evening (outside at the EMTC) and as I looked at our staff, I really felt im-

mense pride and gratitude. As young adults, the COVID-19 has affected them in different ways than it has for

me, a 42-year old mother of three. This is the time in their life when they are enjoying college, getting their

first jobs, finding their first loves, living in new places and meeting lifelong friends. And, in many ways, the

pause button has been pressed on their lives. But, not when it comes to their roles with the EMAA! Every one

of them has brought positivity, optimism, creativity and fun to the EMAA and the mountain. So, I want to thank

all of our staff for a fantastic start to the summer, and when you see them, give them an air high five to let

them know how much we all appreciate them.

Secondly, I have been asked by many how they can support the EMAA. As always, your generous donations

are so welcomed and appreciated—we truly couldn't run the program without you. In addition, because we

are not able to host our two cocktail parties this summer, we have had some generous Friends of the EMAA

come up with ways to donate and have fun doing it! See below for three new fundraising events coming up in

the next couple of weeks!

1. On July 25th, the EMAA will host a Dogs of Eagles Mere Photoshoot Fundraiser. Thanks to the

generosity of some of our talented photographers (Jim Devine, Julie Stauffer, Jim Moyer, Jamie

Kilgore and Rick Liebert), we will be having photo sessions throughout the day and around Eagles

Mere. You can sign-up for ONE slot per family at https://bit.ly/308GSoO. You will receive a free

5x7 print of your pup, and there will be additional items created for purchase of The Dogs of EM.

The recommended donation for each photo sitting is $100.

2. The EMAA Basket Bonanza raffle will be held on July 24th between 12-5pm at the beach. If you

are willing and able to donate a themed basket, the EMAA will be providing the basket– please

pick up an empty basket at the beach desk and sign up at https://bit.ly/3fhDdex! We ask that bas-

kets be completed and dropped off on the porch of Lake House (203 Pennsylvania Avenue) by

Wednesday July 22nd. Please call Jessica Reese (919-650-9492) or Catherine Hall (202-468-

3400) with questions. Thanks in advance!

3. Friends of the EMAA have graciously agreed to underwrite the costs of a special edition,

COVID Summer 2020 T-shirt with all proceeds benefiting the EMAA directly (see picture

below). Pre-order one of these shirts for $15 online at www.emcovidtee.com and pick up and

pay for your shirt at the T-Shirt Shop in approximately 7-10 business days. It’s an oppor-

tunity to support the EMAA and get a collector’s item in return!

As I always say, the EMAA is YOUR organization– thank you for giving it so much love and support

and for your understanding as we navigate the uncertainty of the summer of 2020.

All the best,

Amy

I would like to highlight some of the more salient aspects of our beach plan. Let me begin by say-

ing COVID-19 has not gone away. In fact, when people let their guard down, COVID-19 seems to

find a way to make itself known even more. This is why the core aspect of our beach plan is all

about you.

COVID News & Requests (as of right now):

Maintain social distancing

Wear a mask when moving about the beach or speaking with anyone outside your safe circle

Every member will be asked to check in upon arrival at the beach. You will be given a color-

coded wristband which will essentially document the time of day that you arrived.

We will be tracking the total number of people on the beach as the day progresses. Current

Limit: 175 people

If the limit is reached we will deny access to new beach-goers until volunteers or those who

have been on the beach the longest ( at least 2 hours) depart to make room).

The dock will NOT be available for sunbathing or hanging out. No chairs please.

The catwalk will be one-way. Members are expected to self-police this.

No floating dock this summer.

Edgemere will be open for swimming on the weekends.

Gypsy Landing rules on landing boats have been lifted. Please acquire a permit from Bev

Nuttle to use Gypsy Landing for any gathering.

Front desk and the boat dock will only be accepting credit cards as a form of payment.

Co-op boats will be available on a self-service basis. Sailboats are currently unavailable.

The Laurel Path is one-way, counter clockwise. Please walk behind the boat dock when com-

ing from the Laurel Path.

The Beach Shop will be open for regular beach hours. Meals will be available for take-out,

with limited seating in and around her Shop. There will be a take-out window. To call ahead

with your order: 525-3837.

Please direct any comments, suggestions or questions to me at [email protected] or the

entire board at [email protected]

A s an Athletic Assistant, I spend most of my days surrounded by kids. Last week I heard

a young girl say, “it doesn’t feel like summer”. A phrase that I have undoubtedly ex-

pressed myself, but one that hit differently when it came from an 11-year-old.

When I was 11, summer was the most sacred word in my vocabulary. There was a sort of freedom

I felt as the days got longer and warmer. Eagles Mere was the town that brimmed with anticipation

and warmth. I would walk into our yellow house behind the white picket fence thinking about the

unwritten story that was to come.

Summer meant magic. It was the map of my dreams.

Eagles Mere was the place to be who I really was. A bike- riding, strawberry ball-playing, All-

American girl who believed in the magic of summer. It was my reward for sitting still for nine

months- a chance to imagine, explore, and learn. My friends and I soaked up all the hours we

could. We basked in the sun at the beach and begged our dads to let us stay out just a little later.

The next morning, we flew back out the screen door, onto our bikes to make it to the 10AM activity

on the Field of Dreams.

The details of my magical childhood summer now blur together. But the indispensable pieces re-

main the same. Summer felt like wind in my hair and warmth on my face. It smelled like sunscreen

and the grass after rain. It tasted like ice cream, watermelon on the beach, and dinner on the grill.

The sound of summer? It was music playing from speakers, the lifeguard boat at 5:45, and old car

engines. Summer was someone beeping when they arrived on the mountain and explosions of

laughter between friends. Summer was magical through the power of our minds.

Eagles Mere has taught me many things, an important one being the passing nature of all things,

and another being lost time. We look forward to summer all year long, and before we know it, it’s

the middle of July. Each year, I am reminded that Eagles Mere, like time, is precious. What hap-

pens in this magical little town is both a privilege and a gift.

I won’t lie and say that summer is the same for me. But, despite this year’s events, we were all still

given the gift of summer. The chance to step away from the craziness, to reflect, to sit outside and

to breath in the mountain air. To feel magic, just like we did when we were kids.

Cheers,

Katie Farrell

The Importance of Generosity ~~~

Friends,

We get it. This has been a wacky year. Charitable

giving may NOT be top of mind at present, for many rea-

sons. That being said, the EMAA has been working hard

this year preparing for a season we weren’t even sure

we would be able to have. We hope you share our relief

that we are able to be on the mountain and enjoy all it

has to offer, and want you to know that we are fully in-

tending to honor our commitments to the community and

our EMAA staff by providing the excellent programming

you have come to expect year after year, even if we start

a bit later than planned.

Clearly, things don’t look or feel exactly the same, but we

are all in this together, and together, we’ll make this a

summer full of good memories, just as we have for dec-

ades. To that end, we need this year’s giving to look a lot

more like last year’s – especially in the “dollars” catego-

ry. Please consider making a gift to the EMAA, or if you

have already given (THANK YOU!) and would like to

make an additional gift, that would be greatly appreciat-

ed. Please note that there is a monthly option available,

if you like to spread your giving out over the year.

We thank you in advance, and cannot wait to catch up,

whether that be on the beach, on a Conservancy hike, or

over a socially distant cocktail on a porch!

Hi All! I am getting ready to start my 10th school year teaching at Friends School in Boulder, Colorado. I will be teaching 3rd grade, and this will be my second year working with this group of young people. Before com-ing to Friends School, I worked with Mike Hilbert at Open Connections for 3 years. My school was very prepared for the transition to remote learning. The week before schools shut down across the country, we did intense staff training to prepare for the possibility of remote learning. I had my at home learning packets ready to go 2 days before our school closed. When school switched to remote learning, I was ready to deliver my packets and that provided me with a week to get my online class ready.

Teaching remotely was a juggle for our family. Gresham, our 2 year old daughter, was also home with us the whole time. Katie has a very demanding job that re-quires her to be at a computer for 10-12 hours a day with little break. We worked together to come up with a schedule that worked for our family. I met with my stu-dents on zoom twice a day. In the morning, we gathered to do our math number corner, go over the schedule, share stories and ask questions. Gresham joined these calls most days and loved being a part of Mama’s school. I taught my after-noon class during her nap time. Luckily she took great naps in her bed. For those of you who have seen me walking her for hours around the lake will know that this

is no longer the case! My afternoon session was more academic, but we still played games and had lots of time to focus on social and emotional support of the students. I was also available during the day for extra support via facetime or zoom. During the weekends, I created all my asynchronous lessons for the week. Everyday the kids would watch videos and complete activities in math, spelling, reading, cursive and writing. I also provided them with option-al writing prompts, extra math, social and emotional activities and science activities. Each child also worked on an individual project. At the end of the school year, they each presented to their classmates and had the opportunity to be the teacher. The biggest thing I learned is that normal delivery of activities wasn’t going to work. I changed my math curriculum to make it more project-based. My class thrived working on projects and creating things. For reading we changed to doing Readers’ Theater. This was a fun way to track students progress and help them connect socially. I was surprised by how well my students and their families did adapting to all the changes in their worlds. I formed very strong bonds with many of my students' par-ents. We have also said that we are a team working together to support each child, but I truly felt like we were really partnered together. I would hold evening zoom happy hours every other week for parents to connect with me and with each other. This was a great time to keep our class community connected and to support each other. As I look ahead to the school year I am excited to connect with my students again. Although I am nervous to return to in-person learning, I can’t wait to see my kids (even if half their face is covered in a mask). Gresham returns to school on the 3rd of August and I return on the 12th. We are hoping to open our individual exterior doors to our class on the 25th. This year will be very different. We are planning to have everything in our virtu-al classroom so that kids can change from in person to remote learning easily. We are working on creating project boxes to support our units of study. Our hope is everything will be ready to shift quickly back and forth, if/when needed.

Katie, Gresham and I have loved being in Eagles Mere for the last few weeks. It will be hard to say goodbye and head back to so much unknown. The goodbyes are always hard and leaving the mountain always brings

a flood of tears, but this year we are very likely saying goodbye to our family knowing we won’t see them again till next summer. I hope you all stay safe and healthy.

While the schedule will not be exactly the same as it has been in years past, we will still have an amazing

summer on the mountains with all of you! Here are some reminders:

1. The main thing we need to remember this summer is FLEXIBILITY. The staff and EMAA board have

been working extremely hard to plan events and activities for all ages to have a great time, but this year,

there will be updates and changes as needed. Please check Facebook in the morning for updates and

please invite any friends to join the Facebook page for up to date information.

2. Since our plans and schedule will be flexible this year, we will not have a schedule posted in the Treetop

Eagle. As we start this season, we will be posting a daily schedule every morning for the activities. We

will be posting this information on Facebook, as well as on bulletin boards at the Field of Dreams, the

Beach and in town (location TBD). This will have the most up to date information on it.

3. Please remember that your health is the most important thing on the mountaintop! We recommend that

all participants have their temperature checked before attending events and if they are not feeling well

or have a fever, to NOT come to the events! We will be cleaning all the equipment and will be sanitizing

ourselves and the participants before the start of each event.

4. A friendly reminder that the Beach Desk is not the EMAA hotline! Please do NOT call the beach to ask

questions about the EMAA programming! We have an EMAA Hotline 570-525-8686 that will have all of

the up to date information about the programming and everything will be posted on Facebook in real

time.

5. This summer, we will not be utilizing the indoor space of the teen center for activities (both day and

night) due to the small indoor space. In the event of bad weather, all events will be cancelled and there

will be NO rainy day activities. In lieu of using this time at the teen center, we will be doing virtual com-

petitions and events that youth of all ages can participate in! We have some fun events in mind, so

check Facebook for more information about those virtual competitions!

6. Tennis Clinics will still be available for youth ages 5 and up. The Tennis Center will post a schedule for

the dates and time for those clinics and they will be capped on the number of participants that can par-

ticipate. Please call the EMAA hotline (570-525-8686) to register your youth for these clinics! Remem-

ber, there will not be any loaner rackets this year so every participant MUST have their own racket

(there will be some for purchase at the Tennis Center).

7. There will be NO Sailing Clinics, private lessons or events this summer due to the inability to remain dis-

tant during these activities. This also means that the Regatta for this summer has been cancelled

8. While this summer will undoubtedly be different, our goal is to still have this summer be a relaxing and

enjoyable summer on the mountain. There will be events that will not be happening this summer, how-

ever, there will also be many new events and activities that the staff create that could become one of the

staple events in the future. Please know that we understand that this is not what we had hoped the 2020

summer would look like, but as always in EM, there is NO WHINING.

Become an Eagles Mere Museum House

Hunter

Covid -19 has given us an opportunity and a reason to spend even more time out-side this summer. The beautiful homes in Eagles Mere, that we pass virtually every day, all have unique features that define them and separate them from each other.

Here is your chance to join an Eagles Mere House Hunt to identify some of those features, either by yourself or, even better, with a team of family or your circle of

EM friends. It’s a great way to learn a bit more about our favorite town. So, pick up your hunt materials, start your sleuthing and enjoy Eagles Mere architectural from a

new perspective.

The hunt begins July 17th and ends August 14

th. To start your search, just pick up a

House Hunter packet outside the Eagles Mere Museum any time after July 16

th. Find the architectural features shown in the photos and check your answers

on the museum’s website, on August 15th, after the hunt ends. www.eaglesmeremuseum.com

The correct answer will be the address of the location with the feature shown in each photo. To give you a head start, the first photo is already identified. Most of

the features pictured are on buildings with a street address sign or number. If there is none, list the cottage name (example: “Mandalay”), or location (example: gray

cottage on the corner of Laurel Lane and Allegheny Avenue).

All of the architectural features can be seen from the sidewalk or street. Please do

not enter private property. As an added hint, none of the features can be found

down Laporte Ave. beyond Allegheny Ave.
