White, DDS, MSD Eagles Once Soared tells the story of a high school football program’s remarkable renewal that occurred in only one year and continued for several more under the leadership of an extraordinary high school coach. In thorough and succinct chapters, Dr. White allows the reader to share the Eagles’ victories and defeats over four years and to enjoy philosophies and strategies that animated football in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Aside from the descriptive story, readers can benefit from diagrams of football plays and formations, which clarify and enliven the narra- tive. Dr. White explains and illustrates some of the popular formations from football’s formative years and combines these descriptions with anecdotes associated with the coaches who invented and popularized these strategies. Sadly, coaches abandoned some of the early offen- sive formations such as the single-wing, double-wing and spread formations for several decades in order to endorse and use T- formations that emphasized advancing the ball almost entirely through a running attack, which many sarcastically referred to as “three yards and a cloud of dust.” Only recently have coaches returned to variations of those previous fertile configurations, e.g., the shotgun and spread formations that permit more creativity and ingenuity in the passing game and subsequently more excitement for spectators. This short memoir of a high school football program’s growth and maturation under a master teacher shows readers how young men not only learned football fundamentals that earned them success on the gridiron, but also captured some ideas and life philosophy that would sustain and nourish their lives long after they hung up their cleats. 2008 Larry W. Eagles Once Soared tells the story of a high school football program’s remarkable renewal that occurred in only one year and continued for several more under the leadership of an extraordinary high school coach. In thorough and succinct chapters, Dr. White allows the reader to share the Eagles’ victories and defeats over four years and to enjoy philosophies and strategies that animated football in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
