The District led the Nation in the development of a pay-for-performance compensation system that included embedded professional development for staff. Recent passage of Senate Bill 191 codified into state law many of the practices pioneered by Eagle County Schools since 2001. Visited by Bill and Melinda Gates in 2012, the District has been heralded as a model for the Nation in terms of measuring the success of students and teachers. In addition, Eagle Valley High School ranked in the top 10% of high schools across the Nation for career and college readiness. The District has had three Principals of the Year in Colorado, one Superintendent of the Year, and one English Language Learner Director of the Year. Two schools have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools. Two schools are John Irwin Schools of Excellence for 2012; three schools received Governor’s Distinguished Improvement awards in 2012. These accolades come in spite of challenging student demographics, with 34.9% of students being English Language Learners, compared with the state average of 14.4%. Though inclusive of affluent communities like Vail and Beaver Creek, 43.3% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our diverse student population is well-supported by active PTAs, non-profit foundations, and a variety of unique private-public partnerships.
