FROM THE GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT: 

Parents and Guardians of students who are in danger of failing a course for the year were notified in April.   Summer school will be offered by GCIT and the registration form / information sheet can be found on the high school website under the Guidance tab.  Students are encouraged to complete all assignments, stay with their teacher for extra help, and study diligently for their final exams in order to try to pass all classes.  

Seniors are reminded to turn in any information on scholarships they have been awarded so that the district can recognize their success in the district newsletter.   

Juniors who still wish to take the SAT this school year can sign up online with a late fee by May 24th at http://www.collegeboard.com.  Students who wish to take the ACT can sign up with a late fee by May 19th at www.act.org. 

 

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS: 

BEST OF LUCK TO OUR BOYS LAX TEAM!  The #10 seeded Eagles knocked off #7 seeded Glen Ridge in overtime on Wednesday to earn a trip to the quarterfinals against #2 seeded Madison.  Join our Remind 101 by texting "wdhse" to 81010 to find out time and location of Saturday's playoff game.

ENGINEERING NEWS: 

Recently, our West Deptford Engineering Classes 

heard a presentation by Dr. Andrew Piloto on the 

physics of the electromagnetic spectrum and 

semiconductor design and their application to three 

STEM projects. Dr. Piloto is a 1981 WD alumnus who 

is a STEM entrepreneur with a Ph.D. degree in solid 

state physics from John Hopkins University.  Dr. Brian Gotchel, friend, and fellow classmate 

introduced him to our classes. In the early 1990’s Dr. Piloto formed a company that designed 

special purpose hardware using Asics for the XBOX video game controller.  Throughout the years, 

he has made technical contributions to the design of the F‐35 stealth fighter jet’s phased array 

radar system and to the mirrors of the James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the 

Hubble Telescope, which can see infrared light 100 – 250 million years after the Big Bang. Dr. 

Piloto ended his presentation with pictures from his senior year at WD. He credits his physics 

teacher, Dr. Walter Quint and his math teacher, Mrs. Bernadette  Menna, for inspiring him to 

pursue a STEM‐based career. Dr. Piloto very much enjoyed his high school days at West Deptford

SAFE SPACE NEWS: 

          

 West Deptford Safe Space enjoyed their guest speaker Dr. Madelyn Green from the University of Pennsylvania who discussed her doctoral dissertation on women's health as it relates to lesbian life style, her personal pathway to higher education and research, and activism at the University level.    

 

WEST DEPTFORD NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS:  

The WD NHS will be hosting our annual  St. Baldrick's and Children with Hair Loss event on June 16!  

We are looking for students who would be willing to raise funds & shave their head or cut the minimum length of 8 inches of hair (no donation required for a ponytail)! Please see Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Stuart or any NHS member if you would like to be added to the schedule!!  

It is a fun way to celebrate the last day of school and raise awareness for hair loss and childhood cancer!   

We are also in need of any professional license stylists who would like to donate time from approximately 9 to noon on June 16.

Community Service Opportunities:

 

Community Service is beneficial to students for many reasons.  It can boost a student's resume.  It can help them to gain new skills.  It can enable them to network and meet new people.  It can promote personal growth and self‐ esteem. It can strengthen the community.  If your child is interested in completing some community service hours on their own, they should see Mrs. Davis in room 18.  

 

 

 

 

HIGH SCHOOL BAND DEPARTMENT NEWS: 

Eagle Scout project transforms HS Band Room Cabinets 

WDHS Senior Chris Watts was in search of a project to fulfill his Eagle Scout requirements.  Chris Watts, a member of the WDHS band, needed to look no further than the HS band room.  He saw that that the cabinets which store the band's instruments were in desperate need of refurbishment.  The cabinets were originally made in the 1980's by the WDHS woodshop classes.  Chris saw this as a great project to take on. 

Chris began by running a GoFundMe campaign which raised the needed funds for the project.  Over the past four weeks, Chris along with many volunteers removed the cabinet doors, sanded all surfaces and painted the entire unit.  The final touch was carpeting all of the shelving.  The final result is a vast improvement to our school which will serve our band program for many, many more years to come.

NEW JERSEY’S 2017 RECYCLING LOGO AND SLOGAN CONTEST:  Students – Act On Your Commitment to Recycling by Inspiring Others!  

This April marks the 30th anniversary of New Jersey's Statewide Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act, which established a recycling mandate and made New Jersey a national recycling leader. New Jersey was the first state in the country to implement such a law and we are still one of the top recyclers in the country.  

  To celebrate this milestone, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is sponsoring New Jersey’s 2017 Recycling Logo and Slogan Contest.   High school students in grades 9 through 11 are challenged to submit logo designs and slogans that inspire and motivate New Jersey citizens of all ages to recycle their waste at home, school, work, and in the community. The entry should feature a memorable logo and a compelling word or short phrase (slogan). It should focus on recycling and be attention‐grabbing, simple, creative and unique. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS JUNE 2ND.  One winning logo design and slogan will be selected and will be used as part of DEP’s future statewide recycling outreach efforts, which will include various print and online media.   Please go to www.nj.gov/dep/seeds/rlsc2017.htm for submission requirements, entry form and other important information. Questions about the contest should be directed to DEP employee Victoria Kerekes at (609) 984‐6906 or Victoria.Kerekes@dep.nj.gov.
