Robotics is a fun environment for kids ages 9–13 that would like and know how to build actual moving robots.

Mr. Gee, 40, and Henry Atkinson, 13, have a robotics class where they build robots out of metal brackets. Their latest robot is able to propel small balls through the air.

Henry has defeated adults with his very own hand-built robots. Henry’s favorite robot he has built is named Syntax-Error. It seems to be fun if you’re up for the challenge!

All of High Point Summer School went to Gerrish Swim and Tennis Club June 20 for a swim party. The students swam, ate lunch and played games.

“My favorite part was playing hide-and-go-seek in the water,” said David Gomez-Novy.

The temperature rose to 97 degrees in Pasadena that day, so swimming was by far the most popular activity, with some students playing basketball and tetherball for a short period.

Younger students swam in the shallower pool and played on an apparatus that featured a slide that landed kids in water and water spouts of various sizes. Kids also swam in the big pool, drifted and paddled on floats, or took turns jumping off the diving board.

Ellie Chu said, “I like going on the diving board the most!”

Summer Cooking

2

by Tyler Byrne

Mrs. Theresa Chesshir teaches kids techniques for cooking food at 11:45-12:30. In the teacher’s lounge, kids in the fifth grade are already learning how to cook. They make their own lunch!

“The kids love it,” said Mrs. Chesshir.

Dishes made by students in the class include Korean pancakes, turkey tacos, kimbap, pizza, smoothies, and crepes.

The students highly recommend this class because it is taught by an actual cook. Not only does the food look good, it tastes good!

Kugelblitz: It’s Not For Dessert

by Jack Koehler

A kugelblitz is a concentration of light so intense that if forms a black hole, meaning that it is made from energy instead of mass.

Einstein’s famous equation (E=MC), shows that this is theoretically possible.

Scientists took the word kugelblitz from the German for “ball lightning.”

At High Point Summer School second-graders are in a science class taught by Mr. Woodward. They did engineering projects and experiments to learn about chemistry and physics.

For one experiment they put Mentos in two-liter soda bottles to get out the carbon dioxide. This made the soda shoot out of the bottle. They measured how far it went to figure out which soda had the most carbon dioxide.

Two other projects they have done were making airports and cities. The are both made of paper and tape and they are both pretty big.

They also made lava lamps to explore density. They put water, vegetable oil, food coloring, and Alka-Seltzer in a bottle.

Safe Landings a Hit With Studentsby Nicolas Beiner

Safe landings is an interesting new STEM class offered at High Point Academy Summer School. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. Students worked in teams to design and build various projects.

The students first built a catapult that had to launch a ping-pong ball into the student’s hands when he or she pressed on a lever. The students used the Engineering Design Process to brainstorm ideas, build a prototype, test it, and then redesign it as needed.

“I really enjoy building things,” said Nathan Wang. “My favorite project was the catapult.”

Students built a spaceship and a landing pad to absorb the shock of landing for the astronauts inside. One team used marshmallows on their landing pad, but on landing the astronauts fell out. They redesigned the ship to use a parachute to slow it down and land gently on the bed of marshmallows.

Mrs. Romanych, who taught the class, explained that her favorite part of the class was the brainstorming. “I love guiding my students through the engineering process,” she said. “I enjoy watching them have fun while learning.”

A final project was the egg drop. Students had to drop the egg without cracking it. One team put the egg in a cup and surrounded it with balloons. It had to survive a drop from the rooftop playground. It was a success!

Zumba Reportby Emma Watson

For the past four weeks, Andrea Mejia has been teaching a Zumbaclass to High Point summer school students. Zumba is an exercise that uses music and dance moves from Latin America.

“I love to see the progress the kids make learning the dance moves,” said Ms. Mejia. “I also love that the kids are exercising while dancing.”

“I feel very energetic and alive when I dance to the music,” said LinaWallgren. “I love the class. My favorite part is doing the moves with the teacher and the other kids.”

It usually takes about two days for all the students to learn one of the dances. Each one is set to a different song, such as Waka Waka by Shakira.

Mr. Mejia teaches football at High Point Academy to kids aged 9-12. He loves teaching the class because it is his favorite sport.

One of the students in the class, Gregory Feng, helped his team win two games this summer when he caught the ball and ran for a touchdown.

“My favorite position is running back,” said Gregory.

On January 4, the St. Louis Rams made the decision to come back to Los Angeles. It will take three years to build the stadium. Meanwhile, the Rams will be playing at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Rams decided to come back to L.A. because their old stadium wasn’t big enough. The new stadium will be built in Inglewood.

“The fans are extremely excited,” Russell Byrne said.

Five High Point students shot a fantasy-adventure movie this summer with the help of Mrs. Shaw, and it will be released at High Point June 22 during snack time.

The students wrote and starred in the film, which at the time of writing had not yet been titled.

David and Natalie play pirates who capture three lost girls played by Margaux, Ellie, and Francesca.

The movie was mostly filmed in a classroom using a small camera and a green screen, but was also shot outside in the kindergarten- and first-grade playground. It is about 11 minutes long.

“I like that we could make the movie about whatever we wanted,” said one student. “We also picked out great costumes to wear!”

The students also enjoyed writing the script and say that you won’t want to miss it.

The sequel to the very popular Finding Nemo finally came out June 17 and brought in a record $135.1 million in its opening weekend.

Finding Dory is funny, sad and happy, and it is perfect for kids. It has a PG rating.

The character of Dory is voiced by Ellen DeGeneres who does a good job.

The Secret Life of Pets (4/5 Stars)by Julia Pevsner

The Secret Life of Pets is a very funny animated movie that is great for the whole family. It is rated PG and came out July 8, so it is still in theaters.

The movie is about what pets are like when their owners are not home. The main character is a spoiled dog named Max. One day, he is in his apartment, living an awesome life, when his owner brings home a big brown dog named Duke. Max doesn’t like him because he ate Max’s food and slept in Max’s bed.

They end up fighting and running through the neighborhood and end up in the middle of a gang of scary street cats. Max and Duke have an adventure and have to work together if they are going to get back home.

Pokémon Go (4/5 Stars)by Gregory Feng

Pokemon Go is a great game, but people should be careful when they play it. The point of the game is to capture, battle, and train Pokémon, which show up on your smartphone as if they were in the real world. (next page)

The book The Hidden Oracle is the the newest book by the popular author Rick Riordan. It is the first in his new series, The Trials of Apollo. As he has done in his other books, Riordan again has developed interesting characters taken from Greek mythology. The main character in this book, Apollo, was a Greek god and the son of Zeus, who is the king of all the Greek gods.

Apollo lost his status as a god as punishment for accidentally helping the evil character Octavian in the previous Riordan series, Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus. At the beginning of The Hidden Oracle, Zeus turns Apollo into a teenage mortal named Lester Papadopoulos with no memory of his previous life as a god!

Will Lester find a way to transform himself back into a god? Will he stop the evil Roman emperor from taking over the world? You’ll just have to read The Hidden Oracle to find out!I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in mythology, danger, mystery, and adventure.

Riordan incorporates all of this while always adding in some humor, too, to keep you laughing throughout the book. I love the concepts of telling the story from a god’s point of view because Riordan has never written any of his books like this before. Read this book and enjoy the adventure!

Rocket League is a soccer-based game with cars. The goal is to push or hit a ball with your rocket-powered car into your opponent’s goal.

You can play by yourself against the AI or against other people. Your teammates and opponents can be in the room with you or anywhere in the world using the Internet.

As you get better you improve your rank. The different ranks are rookie, semi-pro, pro, expert, and veteran. You also score personal points for doing things like scoring a goal or making an assist. These points let you customize your car with cool rocket trails, toppers, antennas, decals, car bodies, and wheels.

The game is very popular and there are competitions all over. In fact, the International Championship Series Live Final will be held in Hollywood Aug. 6-7.

This game is the most fun, and I really recommend it.

Rocket League (4/5 Stars)

Pokémon, continuedThe game uses GPS, so when you

walk down the street, you can see yourself moving on the game map.

Some people don’t play safely, though. They go places looking for Pokémon that they should not. People have trespassed, fallen off cliffs, and even found dead bodies while playing.

I might give the game a higher score, but it freezes sometimes.

On the evening of July 14, 2016, 84 people were killed and 303 people were injured, including children, in a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day by an Islamic terrorist named Mohamed Lahouaie-Bouhel.

Lahouaie-Bouhel used a 19-ton truck and a pistol to wreak havoc on Nice, France. Police later found his connection to ISIS.

This was the third major Islamic terrorist attack in France since January 2015. Altogether, these attacks killed about 400 people. Because of this, France has been in terror for months.

French president Hollande said that the terrorist nature of the attack cannot be denied.

President Obama said, “On behalf of the American people, I condemn in the strongest terms what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack in Nice, France, which killed and wounded dozens of innocent people. Our thoughts and prayers are to the families of those who died, and we wish full recovery of those who were injured.”

Brexit happened on June 23, when most of the voters in Great Britain decided to exit the European Union. It has been called by some the most important decision Britain has made since World War II.

There are three reasons cited for the outcome of this vote. First, the European Union is not democratic because the parliament cannot pass laws. Second, the people want to keep terrorists out. Third, the failing economies of Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Spain will eventually bring the EU down.
