PRESIDENT’S REPORT

At the time of writing the season was over for all but 2 teams which is overall a disappointing outcome, but it shouldn’t take away from the successes of the 1st Grade Women and U14 Red teams that had enough wins to participate in the finals. It has been great to see our women so strong in the First Grade and we hope that although the 2nd Grade struggled, the experienced gained by this very young side will continue to keep our women's program strong for many years to come.

It is also great to see a new generation of cricketers coming through the junior grades with a very strong U14 Red side making finals and our two WSJCA U14 teams playing off in the Grand Final for that competition. We hope to see many of these young players come through to senior cricket in the future.

The Senior Men were not as successful on the field, but as our coach Mark Harrity recently spoke about at our Golden Eagle luncheon, there were so many exciting signs for the future with a number of 16 year olds debuting in the 1st Grade and some other great talent coming through the 2nd Grade. The coaching team is being proactive in securing some depth for next season and we are hoping to add a few talented players that have perhaps been unrecognised or under-rated by others outside of West Torrens. Watch this space!

Off the field we have maintained a strong financial position despite ever increasing costs and expenses and we hope to be able to report a strong surplus again for this season in the Annual Report. Our Annual Presentation Nights will soon have come and gone, and I congratulate in advance all those players recognised for outstanding performances this season. I look forward to spending time with our members and supporters at the Presentation Nights to wrap up what has been a somewhat disappointing season performance-wise for most of our teams, but one that has again set us up for continued strength and growth as a club on and off the field for the future.

STOP PRESS

Being the organised person, I like to think I am, I wrote this a week before the 1st Grade Women's Grand Final and now need to update it to acknowledge their marvellous effort in winning all the trophies available to them this season, just like our 1st Grade Men did in 2016/17! A massive congratulations to all of the players and support team involved in this outstanding achievement and particularly Brooke Harris who pulled a Dusty and won everything there was to win this season! There was a very strong WT crowd again for the Grand Final at the brand-new Karen Rolton Oval and I am proud to be the President of a club that is developing a very strong culture of supporting our own, on and off the field. Well done and thank you to all our members and supporters for being there to cheer on our Sheagles, especially the very vocal group from our Senior Men's sides! Back at the club on Saturday night it was great to see the Men and Women sitting together and enjoying the success as one. There are plenty of ways we can strive to improve our club, but I couldn’t have been prouder to see such unity between the male and female components of this club on what was a very special night for our Women's First Grade.

Our U14 Reds put in a big fight in their semi-final and almost pulled off a come from behind win. Although it was not to be, the resilience shown from this group of young men to fight the game out to the absolute end was outstanding and will hold them in good stead for years to come! Chins up lads, learn from your failures and use it to drive you towards success.

A final huge congratulations to Kelvin Smith and Daniel Drew on their personal triumphs in winning the Bradman and Lehmann Medals, respectively. A great recognition for two very talented players who are also great men to have around West Torrens.

OBITUARIES

BILLS John Frederick (Fred or Frog) RHB/RAF b. Torrensville 7 April 1942 d. Woodville 17 Mar 2018 A Grade debut: # 320 v. Kensington at Thebarton Oval, November 1963 9 A Grade games Outstanding Footballer

Fred Bills, a former player and staunch supporter of our Club, recently passed away after a long illness. He was educated at Allenby Gardens P.S. and Findon H.S. where he dominated at both cricket and football. He first came to prominence as a quick bowler when he took 9/23 at Hindmarsh Oval in the U16 SACA Schoolboys Competition In January 1958. The possessor of an excellent bowling action he then ventured to Thebarton Oval to enter the senior ranks. Here he noticed the speed generated by state opening bowler Alan Hitchcox and decided to model his action on Hitchie’s. Unfortunately, this was the time of the vendetta by the authorities on certain types of bowling styles and both Hitchie and the fiery redhead were targeted for the ‘illegitimacy of their delivery action’. Fred was no-balled by Colin Egar three times against Prospect at Thebarton Oval which curtailed a longer sojourn in A Grade. He retired at the end of the 1965-66 season to concentrate on his other sporting love, Aussie Rules.

Fred was already entrenched as a key player in the West Torrens football side as a run-on ruckman or follower since 1959 and continued as an indispensable cog in the Eagle machine until 1975. Reasonably quick for a man of his size he often gave the impression of plodding, so easy was his gait. He gave the impression that anyone with an ounce of talent could be highly effective and achieve his great heights. His skill coupled with tenacity created a cult figure who was a hero and a demi-god to the hordes of Eagle supporters. Fred was tough, uncompromising, devoid of subtlety who made getting the ball his sole object (irrespective who may be in his path) but always scrupulously fair.

Fred played 313 games for West Torrens, 7 state games, won 4 Eagles Best and Fairest awards but more importantly won the complete respect of all SA footy fans.

Two State appearances stand out. In 1962 at Subiaco, SA was 12 points adrift at three quarter time and with only 16 fit men. Fred, with blood streaming profusely from his mouth, summoned super human strength and courage to be the stand out in the final term and guided the visitors to victory. The following year he was a member of a very strong outfit which took on the VFL at the MCG. His vital role, which he played with extreme effectiveness, was to ensure that the Vics did not use crowding tactics on ruckman Bill Wedding. The energy and strength portrayed by Fred and his counterpart Neil Kerley gave Wedding a free run at the ball and he became unstoppable in feeding the smaller SA players and delivering an SA win!

The sincere condolences of the West Torrens Cricket Club are extended to his widow Dianna, his children Leanne and Andrew, and to his extended family.

VALE Fred.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Dan and Olivia Cullen who became the very proud parents of Owen James on 26th February. ‘Owie’ weighed 2.55 kgs (5 lb. 10oz.) at birth. According to eye witness accounts Oli ‘did a magnificent job’. The extremely proud parents are gradually getting used to sleepless nights. Already the fingers on ‘Owie’s’ right hand have developed callouses from holding a Kookaburra.

Congratulations from all at the Club to Callum Ferguson and his fiancé Rhiannon Eglington. Best wishes for a long and happy union to you both. Ferg – we now expect to see Rhiannon at the Club much more often.

All The Kings’ Men

Our Club History ALL THE KINGS’ MEN – A history of the Hindmarsh Cricket Club 1857-1897 has received popular support and copies are selling above expectations. The publication received an excellent review in The Weekend Australian (10-11 February) by one of the world’s leading cricket writers Gideon Haigh. Gideon writes

“The chief excellence of All The Kings’ Men is presenting cricket in the context of working life. Denis argues repeatedly for the significance to sport of the coming of the eight-hour day and the 44-hour week.”

And further:

“Now and again a proper historian twigs that games concern more than wiling away time.”

He was referring to the approach taken to writing – not just another cricket book but the significant changes in Society told through a working-class Cricket Club.

Michael Sexton – ABC Journalist – sent an email:

“To be honest I was expecting a telling of colonial cricket in SA (which I got) but was entranced by the social, political and economic history woven into it. Congratulations. It is no easy thing to weave a story like that but almost every page offered me something to pause and think about.”

Copies are available for $40.00 (plus postage if required) through Denis Brien (08 8356 7132) or at Rex’s Findon Newsagency and Groves’ Port Canal Shopping Centre Newsagency. All monies raised will go towards Junior Development of girls and boys at West Torrens.

Teams were made up of players born here who identify with a particular ancestry and also those new to South Australia from that particular country. The countries represented this year were: Afghanistan (Champions 2015 & 2016), Africa, Bangladesh, China, England (Runners-Up 2016), Germany, India, Ireland (Runners-Up 2017), Italy, Nepal, Netherlands (Champions 2017), New Zealand, Pakistan (Runners-Up 2015), Scotland, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Men’s 1st Grade

Round 11: After being sent in yet again on a difficult pitch we struggled losing wickets regularly, eventually being dismissed for 153 against a very strong Kensington bowling line up. Young Nick Crouch in his second 1st Grade match top scored with an aggressive 47 from only 47 balls faced, with the second youngest in the team, Bailey Capel scoring 32. Some excellent bowling nearly claimed victory with Kensy declaring at 8/155, Braedon Renshaw with the best figures of 3/42. In pursuit of an outright win, we made a quick 136 in the second innings, setting a target of 135 from 40 overs. The match came down to the final ball, with Kensington finishing on 9/130, one wicket shy of an exciting outright win. Ben Williams had his best game for the season with career best 1st Grade figures of 7/43 to nearly get us over the line!

Round 12: Again, the toss did not go our way and we had to bat on a tough pitch with slow outfield. Captain Kelvin Smith was outstanding and was the only batsmen for the match to look comfortable, top scoring with 79. Another debutant in 16-year-old Erik Carrington took 26 balls to score his first run, before being finally dismissed for a well-made 26, and the team all out for 169. Again, our bowlers were superb, with Northern’s batters all failing to get past 8 runs, except captain Cosgrove. Josh Slee took 4/48, Ben Williams 3/25 and Braedon Renshaw 2/22 to dismiss Northern for only 108. We batted in the second innings and finished on 4/80 when the game was called, giving us our first win since the Xmas break and our Bye.

Round 13: The final game of the season against Glenelg and our batting woes continued, slumping to 9/77. A 10th wicket partnership of 52 between Ben Williams (his highest 1st Grade score of 48) and Braedon Renshaw (6 not out - not 30 like Erik announced at Pressos!) got the total to a defendable 129. Glenelg slumped to 3/34, and then the century maker was plum LBW for 2, but not given. They finally declared at 5/201, with Josh Slee and Kelvin Smith taking two wickets each. We batted much better in the 2nd innings, with Nick Crouch making his highest 1st Grade score of 68, and Daniel Drew cruelly denied another century, out for 99 on the last ball of the match.

Richard Williams (Team Manager).

Men’s 2nd Grade

The final three rounds in the second grade mirrored the performance of the side throughout the year - moments of individual brilliance, periods of domination within games and often frustrating final results. Despite a below par win-loss record, a great deal of positives can be taken from this period and the season in its entirety. The team had, for much of the season, a decidedly young feel, with a large number of players receiving their first opportunity at this level of cricket and taking it with both hands. This was the single biggest positive to take from the season.

Much should be made of the outstanding performance with the bat of Erik Carrington, who amassed 352 runs at the remarkable average of 88 in just 6 matches, before a deserved A grade call up. All of this was achieved whilst still being eligible for the under 16 competition. Mention must also be made of the much-improved batting of Lachie Russell, who with 359 runs was tied as our leading run scorer with Carl Mickan. With the ball, Sean O’Dwyer led the attack superbly to finish with 32 wickets for the season.

The season’s highlight came against Kensington in round 11, where the side combined for our best and most even performance of the season, to beat the eventual minor premiers by just 12 runs. This is as high a level of cricket as the second grade has played for some years, and hopefully provided an insight as to what can be expected from these individuals in the years to come.

Special thanks to our team manager Greg Stanford and scorer Brian LeCornu, as well as the many other individuals who helped the team function throughout the season. Nick Maegraith - Captain

After a weekend in the Riverland where Tahlia McGrath cleaned up Sturt and Northern’s top orders, we had secured our spot in the T20 Grand final finishing second to Kensington, with 12 year olds Matilda Maitland and Isabel Bryksy making their debuts on the trip.

Into the T20 Grand Final the next weekend at Adelaide Oval, missing Ellie Falconer and Tahlia McGrath due to the last round of the WNCL, meant we were able to debut another up and coming Sheagle in Lucy Meyer as well as welcome back a wealth of experience in Annette Johnson and Lauren Ebsary. It was Lauren’s first game back in the blue and yellow after another season with the Perth Scorchers. ‘Beep’ tore through Kensington with both bat and ball taking 4/5 of 2.3 overs to bowl out the reigning premiers for 65. With the ball Kayla McGrath and Laura Niejalke also contributed with 2 each. ‘Beep’ then backed up her bag of 4 with an unbeaten 29 no supported by Brooke (Harris) and Wardy (Caroline Ward) to pass Kensi’s total in the 15th over and take out the T20 premiership!

Our focus now shifted to the One-Day Competition, still having 4 minor rounds left and sitting second. After possibly our worst performance of the season against Kensington in round 7, the girls turned things right around as we rolled through Port Adelaide, Southern and Sturt on our way through to the Semi’s. In those last rounds Tahlia (111) made her maiden century for the Sheagles helping us to our highest total of the season of 302 from 50 overs with Brooke Harris’s 67 against Port and 3/22 against Sturt proved to be winning contributions.

As fate would have it we closely missed finishing top of the table, meaning another West Torrens v Kensington Semi-final was on the cards. With the covers being pulled on and off and more bad weather looming, we went out to bat. Kayla and Ange (Treloar) got the ball rolling with a 1st wicket partnership of 33, but with a small collapse from the top order, it was Beep and Wardy who steadied the ship making 30 and 31 respectively, helping us to a total of 142. Kensington got off to a steady start being 0/42 but a great set of bowling by Ellie, Emily Hinze and Brooke, plus an ‘insane’ run out by Brooke, and the support of some very rowdy 1st Grade boys, helped us roll Kensington for 106 and into the One-Day final.

In front of a huge blue and gold crowd of supporters we took on Northern District hoping to follow in the boy’s footsteps from last year and ‘go again’. A strong overall performance with the bat with Tahlia (45) Ange (25) Wardy (20) and another huge performance from Brooke (73) saw us defending 204. Taking the new ball, Ellie didn’t miss a beat taking the key wickets of Scorpions McPharlin, Perry and Saville to have us in a great position at 3/18. Another great spell from Emily Hinze (2/21) broke two of the middle order partnerships, but again Brooke, backing up her performance with the bat, ripped through Northern’s tail taking 4/33 leading us to the double premiership!

A huge thank you from me and the playing group to everyone who came out and supported us in the Semi, the Grand Final as well as at Adelaide Oval for the T20 Grand Final and throughout the season. To Leigh (Drennan Coach for most of season) for flying from Brisbane to watch us, and to everyone who celebrated with us after the game. Couldn’t be any happier to be an ‘Eag’.

Rounds 5 to 9 of the 40 over competition: Round 5 gave our young team their first win of the 40 over competition, with a strong team performance against Port. Rounds 6, 7 and 9 were losses – two against strong opposition and one a very close loss to Prospect. Round 8 was a highlight, with a great win against higher ranked TTG – an awesome team effort capped off by a hat-trick to Matilda Maitland.

Overall this team has shown good improvement across the season with excellent determination and team spirit. The team is pleased to have welcomed some new players to the club and we hope to see everyone again next season.

A very big thankyou goes to the players’ parents who have helped out with the team this season.

Caroline Ward Mentor

Men’s 3rd Grade

Mixed results unfortunately concluded the season for the 3rd grade after round 13, as we missed out on a finals berth and finished in seventh position.

Round 11 saw us face off against top placed Kensington, in a difficult game for us. The Browns piled on 202 while Brad Cocks (4/53) and David Bourn (3/32) were the pick of the bowlers. But it was our batting that let us down as we ran into a Panelli (8/18) master-class as the Browns dismissed us for 43 before forcing us to follow on. We stuck strong in the second innings and finished the match at 4/66.

In round 12 we had a dominant outright win over Northern Districts. We dismissed the Jets for 62 with Daniel Joseph the standout bowler (3/2 off 6), before declaring at 5/108 (46 runs ahead). Clay Muirhead (68) and Harry Russell (33) played strong knocks. We then dismissed the Jets again for 93 courtesy of Morgan Cocks (5/33) and Darren Joseph (4/11), before passing the required total with the loss of four wickets.

Round 13 saw us come up against a strong Glenelg side. We managed to restrict the Seahorses to 174 thanks to a Darren Joseph 20 over spell where he took 5/54. Unfortunately, a sprinkler mishap overnight forced us to bat in extremely challenging conditions and it showed as we were dismissed for 83, with Callum Agnew (28) the only batsman who looked comfortable.

Overall a successful year for the 3rd grade, as we saw a number of players push up through the grades and play 2nd and 1st grade. Ultimately, we missed the finals, but we made some solid strides moving forward. With more depth developing at the club and players returning from injuries it is an exciting time to be involved with the lower senior grades.

Jordan Capel - Captain

Men’s 4th Grade

This season was extremely different to previous years where we have not had the luxury of having experienced players filling up the team. It was exciting because it allowed us the chance to see a number of both old and new faces.

As always is the case we continue to be blessed when it comes to attaining past players to help throughout the season. There has always been someone or a number of different people who are more than keen to put up their hand to volunteer their time on Saturdays to fill up the team sheets. Although we may not have had the most successful season in terms of wins / losses, the experience that has been gained by the younger players who have played their first senior season for the club is invaluable.

I’m sure in years to come what everyone has learnt will put them in a better spot to succeed in their cricket careers. I would also like to thank all the parents, friends, club volunteers, and everyone else who helped with scoring, picking up equipment after games, afternoon teas, drinks, players teas and presentations. All these things help to create a successful culture throughout the club.

Round 9: West Torrens vs Port Adelaide With some new faces in the side we battled Port Adelaide. Batting first Lachie Hoy was resilient at the top order making 27 from 63 balls, Maxy Parsons also provided great support with a solid 12 runs from 43 balls in just under an hour at the crease. We fell for 60 after 30 overs with some excellent bowling from Port Adelaide. Our boys bowled equally as well with only 2 extras, however, 60 runs never being enough to defend and Port Adelaide made 137. Best with the ball were Kyle Leiblich 3 for 28 off 12 overs, and Seby Masih and Max with 2 wickets off their 8 overs respectively. A great 2nd innings came from our boys making 198 off 53 overs, best with the bat being Jackson Dell'Oro with 75 off 83 balls including 11 fours and 1 huge six. Next best being Angus Tayleur with a well compiled 32 runs.

Round 10: West Torrens vs Woodville Playing the undefeated Woodville at home they proved to us why (they were undefeated) as we managed 98 in the first innings. Angus Tayleur (27 runs) and Heath Nikoleaff (24 runs) being our best with the bat. Woodville batted for 51 overs making 239 with our best with the ball being Bradley Lewis 4/55 and Riley Williams (Mr Consistent) bowling beautifully for final figures of 3 for 50. We again showed our talent in the 2nd innings scoring a very determined 5 for 85 off 27 overs. Luke James batted brilliantly for 33 no and again Heath, having a good game with the bat, making a solid 22 runs.

Round 10: West Torrens vs Northern District The last game for the season being a one-day fixture at Craigmore. We won the toss and batted first in warm conditions. Ned Maguire showed great discipline facing 45 balls for 7 runs whilst Luke James was again best with the bat making a well-deserved and gritty 52 off 76 balls. Curtis Grove made a cameo innings of 19 off 9 balls. In a seesawing game we fell just short with Northern Districts passing our total with 6 wickets down. Best with the ball Bradley Lewis, 2 for 31, and a special mention to Ned with his first bowling spell for the season topping it off with a wicket! Kent Lewis – Team Manager

The final few rounds of the year contained lots of good cricket from the boys and generated our one win for the season - an excellent outright win over Port Adelaide.

The team was quite different by the end of the year with several U14’s boys coming into it as well as the inclusion of Patrick, Archie and Aiden from the Yorke Peninsula. Thanks to all those boys for their contribution, and especially the Yorkes parents for bringing the boys each weekend.

The final one-dayer against Northern District produced an excellent opening bowling partnership from Pat Fry and Sebby Masih, knocking over their top 3 batsman for 30. Tom Nattrass and Matt Bowie then kept up the pressure and knocked over a couple more to have them 5/55. Certainly one of our better bowling starts and shows how we improved over the year.

Our batting remained as brittle as it has all year although Lochy Hoy belted an excellent 45 to show how he had improved through the year, with a number of other solid contributions. All in all a tough but fun season for the team.

Thanks to coach Tom Maegraith for all his efforts in developing the boys, Jaxon Dell’oro for captaining and to the parents who scored, umpired, ran drinks and provided afternoon tea.

In Round 9 we took on Port Adelaide, sending them in after winning the toss. We had them 3/30 but then their batsman soaked up balls and managed to bat through to be 9/92 off 60 overs. Best of the bowlers were Nathan Marshall with 3/5 off 10 and Chandan Saddi with 2/9 off 9. On day 2 we went out looking for quick runs, so we could put Port back in. Our top three, Nicholas Thornton, James Reuther and Nathan all retired on 54 and we declared at 1/183 after 22 overs. Bowling a second time we didn’t have any luck and were not able to force an outright with Port finishing at 6/44 off 36 overs. Best with the ball was Rhys Kozned with 2/15 and Chandan with 2/8. The Player of the Match Award was Nathan with the Encouragement Award going to Nicholas. Special mention to Luca Paolo for sub fielding for all of Port’s first innings and being the loudest voice on the field.

Round 10 saw us take on Woodville at home. Again, we won the toss and with the possibility of showers put them in to bat which turned out to be a good decision. James struck in the sixth over to start the wickets falling. They went from 1/5 to 6/29 after 20 overs and then all out for 82 in the 47th over. James took 4/18 and Rhys 5/33. Batting we passed their score 3 wickets down and retired Luke Terry and Jack Hawke to give everyone a bat. Rhys and Nathaniel Forby had plenty of time in the middle, facing almost 20 overs between them. Luke and Jack came back in with Jack making 33 and Luke 35 not out. Man of the Match was Rhys and the Encouragement Award went to Nathaniel with a patient 6 from 49 balls. This win saw us guaranteed of playing finals.

For the last minor round game we travelled to the Paddocks to play a one-day game against Northern Districts who won the toss and elected to bowl. We were in trouble early at 3/12 before James and Jack put on a partnership of 24 runs. Jack Rowntree (16 off 71 balls), Thomas Brown (18 off 33) and Harrison Cook (21 not out) helped us post a competitive total of 8/118. We bowled well and never let them get ahead of the required run rate with the first wicket being a run-out from some good fielding by Nathaniel. Rhys came on and picked up a wicket with his first delivery finishing with 4/10 off 8 overs. Rhys again was the Man of the Match with the Encouragement Award going to Harrison.

After finishing third we played Sturt in the semi-final at Park 25 number 3. We won the toss and chose to bat. As with the Northern District game we were in trouble again at 4/18. A solid innings from Luke of 51 (opening and last wicket to fall) saw us reach a modest total of 87 in the 58th over. The boys knew that they would have to bowl and field extremely well to defend the small total and they gave it their best shot having Sturt 4/23 and then 5/44 at tea. Unfortunately, after tea one Sturt batsman started to get on top of us and they chased down the runs 7 wickets down.

All in all, it has been a great year for the boys with everyone contributing and winning 9 of the 11 minor round games. Thanks to Nick and Tom for coaching the lads and a big thank you to all the parents for your help and support through the season. Mick Thornton/Tim Cook - Team Managers

Rounds 10 With a serious chance of making the top 4, the U14 Whites visited Woodville in a must win game and, on a small oval, restricted the home side to 8/179. Max Davidson starred with 4/21 (10 overs), supported by Sam Turner 2/28 (15 overs), and Nick Boeyen with 4 outfield catches.

After an early setback, the boys went about their work and at 3/82 from 17 overs, were on top at just under 5 runs/over, with Clayton Lewis 32 and by Jacob Chapman 19. However, a collapse saw 7 wickets fall for only another 52 runs and a top 4 spot out of reach. Thomas Markwick held firm in the lower order with 12. Woodville were 3/67 in the 2nd innings with Chapman 2/1 and Nick Boeyen 1/25.

The final round at home to Northern District showed why the visitors have been unbeaten this season as they amassed 5/235, with Sam Turner 2/43 and Lachlan Treadwell taking 2 outfield catches the highlights. Our boys batted through the 40 overs to finish 6/107 after early wickets fell, well short of the target but playing a measured innings with Jacob Chapman 32, Billy Hawke 20 no, and Tredwell 15.

Statistically, the U14 Whites finished the season equal 6th on the table with our percentage leaving them 9th, but only 1 and a half wins out of the top 4. Our early season form had the boys well placed to shape the makeup of the finals, but inconsistency, whilst expected at this age group, saw unexpected losses after Christmas. We set out to support the boys to learn and develop their individual and team game and there is much to be excited about and proud of. There were many achievements to build on next season, and the most satisfying were the little successes along the way – the way the boys represented the club, their team work, trying new things, and their good humour. And of course, the competition’s best afternoon tea.

Many thanks to Coach Nick Maegraith, the parents who helped with scoring and match day setup, training, etc. but mostly for their support and encouragement of the players and the club throughout the season. Andrew Boeyen and Bengy Paolo – Team Managers.

Round 11: West Torrens Def Grange Blue away Round 11 was our last game before the grand final so it was a must win game. We lost the toss and Grange elected to bat. We started off okay, but we needed some early wickets. After 20 overs the wickets started to fall, and we got Grange out for 85. Best bowlers were Billy Hawke 3 overs 2/5 and Jackson Ritter 3 overs 2/2. We batted for the remainder of the day and ended up on 1/50. The next week we spent the whole day, at the crease and ended on 6/203. It was a great final game for the boys before the final. Best batters Billy Hawke 30 not out and the rest of the runs were shared around.

Grand Final: West Torrens Gold Def West Torrens Blue In the final game of the year we were ready to play against the other West Torrens team! We lost the toss and batted first. It was a slow start with our boys nervous and batting quite slowly, but we still had wickets in hand. In the middle section we lost a few too many wickets and were all out for 98 at the end of the day. The next week we came out and had to bowl extremely well in order to win. We started off okay getting a couple of wickets, but we knew we needed to get a few more quickly after drinks. We ended up getting 2 quick wickets but their experienced batters came in and performed really well helping them get over the line at 5/102. Best bowler was Jack Hawke 2 overs 2/8 and best batter was Riley Schultz with a handy 19. Overall, I was very proud of the boys throughout the season.

WSJCA Under 14 Gold

Round 11 The last minor round of the season saw West Torrens Gold come up against a competitive Port District side at Gleneagles Reserve. Having won the toss and electing to bowl, the team chased quick wickets while bowling good discipline lines. Apart from a few dropped catches the bowlers shared the wickets around, which exposed the rest of Port District’s inexperienced batting line up. Our ruthless bowlers minimised the extras giving Port District nothing easy to score off and bowled them out for 66 off 28 overs. We had to have a bat overnight and obtained quick runs to win first innings points in a nervous chase to finish day 1 on 6/67.

Day 2 saw the addition of Luke Terry back to the side after a few weeks off and he had an instant impact, smashing any bad ball to the boundary and finished on an impressive 35 off 32 deliveries. We declared on 6/112 after 20 overs with a healthy lead of 46 runs. During the second bowling innings, the boys stepped up a serious gear and were incredible. It was the best team bowling performances to witness, only bowling a total of 6 extras and dismissing Port District for 70 as Nathan Marshall came on and caused immediate havoc claiming 4 wickets for no runs. With 16 overs remaining, the boys chased down the target of 24 runs to win outright, claim a spot in the finals, and finish on top of the ladder.

Grand Final The Grand Final match saw both dominant West Torrens teams clash in a fiery contest to see who would claim bragging rights and the flag. West Torrens Gold had a minor win, with winning the toss and electing to bowl first. It was obvious the boys were nervous as early misfields and a dropped catch put us on the back foot. However, Krish Thakker was remarkable and obtained the vital breakthrough. This allowed our bowlers to tie up one end with good discipline bowling as Rhys Kozned claimed the dangerous wicket of Jack Hawke. All our bowlers stepped up once again as they do so often and took wicket after wicket, dismissing West Torrens Blue for 98 after 38 overs.

Young Xavier Smith, Jake Hill, Nathan Marshall and Rhys Kozned were the pick of the bowlers claiming 2/11, 1/8, 2/11 and 1/1 respectively. During our batting innings, we were off to a patient start being 1/16 after 10 overs although due to the role of each batsman taking the shine off the new ball and seeing the experienced bowlers off, which payed dividends. Luke Terry came to the crease and did what Luke Terry does best, which was hitting the bad ball hard to the boundary and playing with great concentration making 29 off 27 deliveries. Everyone batted well to see our boys chase down the target and finish 5/102 off 30 overs. This allowed our team to the premiership of the U/14s WSJCA competition in an outstanding performance.

FALCONER Ellen (Ellie) RHB – RAMF Date of Birth: 3 Aug 1999 1st Grade: 1st Grade Games: 34 x 50 over, 23 T20 1st Grade Debut: #54 v Kensington at Parkinson Oval, October 2014 50o Statistics: Batting: 346 runs @ 15.73 H.S. 54 v Kensington @ Park 25 #1, March 201 Bowling: 37 wkts. @ 22.08 Best 4/51 v Northern District at Henley Oval, January 2016.

Educated at Clare P.S., St. Joseph’s School Clare, and Clare H.S. Ellie Falconer was recruited from the mid north town during her first year in the U13’s state side. Team mate Brooke Harris’ dad, Mark, spoke to her and her Mum Jan about coming down and filling in for the women’s B-Grade side. As a result, Rocka, then President, wrote to the family with an official invitation to play for West Torrens. From then on, she played more and more games each year, firstly in the 2nd Grade before forcing her way into the Firsts as a 14 yo in the T20’s and a year later into the 50 over side.

As an 8-year-old Elle went to her brother’s club Clare’s training sessions which sparked her interest and then she started to play in the backyard. A few weeks later she started to train with the team and was selected to play matches in the under-age teams and then the Men’s senior grades.

Shelley Nitschke and Lauren Ebsary have been the greatest influences on her game. They are both country girls who have been very successful on the big stage while playing for Australia and are still both heavily involved with women’s cricket, doing everything in their power to make it the best female sport in the country! Quite rightly Ellie believes they have a huge amount of cricket knowledge and experience about the game and are always happy to help.

Her biggest achievement has been selection in the Australian U19 team which is currently playing a tri-series in South Africa with England the third country involved. In 2016-17 she won the West Torrens 1st Grade Batting with 357 runs which, backed up by 12 wickets, earned her a place in the SACA Women’s Team of the Year. As a consequence, Ellie won Scorpions and Strikers contracts for 2017-18.

Ellie feels her strength lies with her bowling as she has reached a speed of 105 kph which quite a substantial pace for a female. However, she feels that her batting and fielding need work. She was somewhat unlucky in the Grade Cricket Finals this season being run out in a mix up in the Semi Final and being given l.b.w. in the Grand Final when she played a clean leg glance for a single (ball didn’t touch the pad).

Ellie is really ‘switched on’ about her goals in cricket. She aims to keep improving her game and to learn more around the thinking aspect of cricket including wanting to improve her knowledge about certain situations in the field and consequently understanding how to overcome such problems.

Ellie’s thoughts on the West Torrens Cricket Club.

“Best club in the league! It’s a great club, great support from everyone at the club, (both young and old

and male and female).”

She feels that the Club must keep supporting the female competition as we do but it is essential that

the Club supporters continue (and increase) their presence at the Women’s matches and training as

much as possible, especially out at the Young Eagles Academy. [Currently we do it better than any

other club but need to up the ante to get more girls playing for West Torrens. Ed.]

Ellie commented that travel and facilities are the biggest obstacles which country girls encounter in playing top Grade cricket. But she concludes that “If you want to reach the top, it doesn’t matter what materials you have, it’s all about a person’s drive and determination.”

She is currently studying a double degree at the University of South Australia (UniSA) as a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science/Bachelor of Psychology. Ellie has been playing netball and basketball (and occasionally touch footy) since she was little, but this year she’ll just be concentrating on cricket and study.

Achievements: S.A. U19 Captain Bradman Medalist 2016-17 Darren Lehmann Medalist 2017-18

Educated at Fulham North P.S. and St. Michaels College Daniel’s early sporting interest was on the tennis court. He began having a racquet in hand at a very young age and at Primary School, cricket was simply a hobby. He lived and breathed tennis until the age of 12-13 and was prominent on the National Youth circuit where his father Charles took him to play in various State Championships and which still is a major highlight of his life to which he is indebted to Charles and his mother Annie. At times he partnered Thanasi Kokkinakis in doubles tournaments.

However, near the end of Primary School he watched his older brother Harrison going through the Junior programs cricket at West Torrens. Living next to Henley & Grange Oval he took the opportunity to view senior practices and yearned to be one day involved. Consequently, his interest in tennis began to wane.

Daniel began his sojourn at West Torrens by joining the Young Eagles Development squad for the last few training sessions in January 2008 and made his debut for the Club in the U14 Whites v East Torrens at Henley Beach PS in October 2008.

Daniel’s 1st Grade debut came at the beginning of the 2013-14 season when he had the modest return of 4 and 1/38. However, he has mastered his way through the Grades to reach his current pinnacle of a Redbacks Rookie contract in 2017-18. Chosen primarily as an off-spinner in his debut year, his batting developed quickly to gain the #4 spot and he made his A Grade first century in his third season followed by another, 101 v Adelaide at Glandore Oval in November 2016. This season he powered his way to 116 (113 balls) against Northern Districts at Salisbury Oval in October in a stand-alone 50 over game, to advance his claims as an aggressive striker of the ball. All the while Drewie increases his spin bowling talents taking more wickets each season with a best return this season of 25 wickets in the 2-Day competition.

Drewie feels that his biggest achievement in cricket has been to participate in the three 1st Grade Premierships last season including captaining the T20 Cup win against Glenelg at Adelaide Oval when he scored an unbeaten 61 from 52 balls. He still gets ‘Goosebumps’ thinking about taking the final wicket in the 2-Day Final v Kensington to take out the Triple Crown.

Daniel’s greatest strengths appear to be his attacking mode as a player, being willing to take the game on, and believing you can win from any position. His understanding of cricket is advanced for a 21 yo. The biggest influences on him have been his schoolboy idols Ricky Ponting and AB plus his brother Harrison whom he watched train and play countless hours and his Dad Charles for his continued support.

His major goal is to be the best cricketer he can possibly be and that then would assist his other goal to continue pushing for a place in the Redbacks First Class line-up and if successful to then aim for even higher honours.

Drewie is extremely happy and proud to be part of the West Torrens success and believes that the support from behind the scenes off the field is quite ‘unbelievable’ and unlike any other Club.

Eagle Eye Page 21 March 2018

Player Profile Daniel Drew continued

Acquaintances of his from other Clubs have told him: ‘Your Club looks like so much fun.” and ‘ “I want what your Club has, at ours.”

As a hard-hitting batsman and off spinner he played a number of Futures League games during 2016-17 and scored his maiden century at this level. He was rewarded for his unbelievable Premier season in 2016-17 by winning the Bradman Medal and was then granted a Redbacks Rookie-Contract and a BBL Strikers Contract by the SACA for 2017-18.

Earlier in life Drewie also dabbled in football but outside of cricket he now just plays social golf and the occasional game of lawn bowls and darts. However, cricket and the cricketing Eagles are his NUMBER ONE priority.
