Seminar on “Application Manual of Geophysical Methods to Engineering and Environmental Problems” in cooperation with SEGJTuesday 10 April 2018, 08:30 – 17:30 Room: Sekip

Geophysical survey techniques have advanced through the 20th century and the 21st century saw automation of data acquisition and analysis for all geophysical methods. While the technology has made the surveys easier, the correct use of instruments is still crucial and data analysis techniques must be appropriate for each field condition. Experience is an accumulation of knowledge and its importance cannot be understated.

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists of Japan (SEGJ) made a standard operation manual of various geophysical surveys and it was published by EAGE. This seminar covers five main subjects by specialists of each discipline to share their experience with the participants. The participants will receive the 600-page manual in digital form as a course material.

Short courses

Short Course 1: “The Use of Surface Waves for Near Surface Velocity Model Building” by Dr Laura Valentina SoccoMonday 9 April 2018, 08:30 – 17:00 Room: Nusantara

The use of surface wave analysis for near-surface characterization has dramatically increased in the last decade thanks to the possibility offered by this technique for shear wave velocity estimation. New tools and approaches have been developed for surface wave data acquisition and analysis to make the method robust and suitable to complex systems. The course will supply an overview of the method starting from surface wave propagation and dealing with acquisition, processing and inversion of surface wave data. Advantages and weaknesses of different approaches as well as requirements for data acquisition and analysis will be discussed. Recent developments will be presented with example of results and applications to different near-surface problems.

Short Course 2: “A practical guide to multi-dimensional ERT surveys and data interpretation” by Dr Meng Heng LokeMonday 9 April 2018, 08:30 – 17:00 Room: Wanagama

2-D and 3-D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys provide more accurate subsurface models compared to traditional 1-D sounding surveys and are now widely used for hydrological, environmental, engineering and mining studies. This course provides basic training on practical field survey techniques and data interpretation to professionals in the earth sciences. It includes a review of the resistivity method followed by instrumentation, survey techniques (including choice of electrode arrays), data processing and interpretation techniques for the 2-D and 3-D resistivity methods. A brief review of topics such as time-lapse and I.P. surveys with case histories will also be covered.

Short Course 3: “Engineering geophysics in flood protection and geohazard assessment” by Dr Ernst NiederleithingerTuesday 10 April 2018, 08:30 – 17:00 Room: Nusantara

Protection of people and their assets against natural hazards is one of the most important tasks for scientists, engineers and authorities. Floods and geohazards (e.g. seismic events or landslides) have cost thousands of lives and caused a billion Euro damage in recent years. Geophysical technologies are excellent tools for the structural and condition assessment of near source geology as well as manmade structures like river embankments. But the selection of methods, interpretation and integration with other techniques have to be done properly to gain as much additional information as possible. After recent events, a significant amount of research results and case studies have been published. New regulations or recommendations have been put in place in several countries. Not all of them point in the same direction. This course tries to shed some light on the various ways to design, perform and interpret geophysical surveys for near surface geology and river embankments and to provide guidance along the way.

EAGE Geo-Quiz

Tuesday 10 April 2018, 13:55 – 15:00 Room: Nusantara

Heart beating fast, sweaty palms, tension and cheering from your friend... This is what you are going to experience in all EAGE Geo-Quiz. A great prize awaits the winning team, as they will receive full travel funding to the EAGE 80th Conference & Exhibition, held from 11 to 14 June 2018, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Here the team will participate in the global EAGE Geo-Quiz and compete against students from all over the world.

The quiz counts several rounds with questions related to different fields in the geoscience industry. Geology, geoscience methods, applications for hazard and engineering, applications for shallow natural resources, modelling and inversion, integrated approach are just a few of the fields that students may have to deal with during the competition. The level of the questions differs and will get more difficult along the way.

• Every team consist of 2 students (Must register to attend this EAGE-HAGI NSGE event as well)• Every team will receive one remote control• Once a team has pressed ‘a’, ‘b’, ‘c’, or ‘d’ the answer cannot be changed anymore• The questions will be shown on a screen• Teams will answer the questions under time pressure

Field trip

Friday 13 April 2018, 06:15 – 16:50 Pick up 1: Lobby of Melia Purosani Hotel, 06:15Pick up 2: UGM UC Club, 06:30

There’s so much Yogyakarta has to offer for visitors. An intriguing fieldtrip to the Borobudur temple and Merapi Volcano is scheduled on 13 April. On this field trip, you will visit Borobudur, a majestic heritage that once hold the fame as one of the seven wonders in the world. It is approximately 40km northwest of Yogya located in an elevated area between two volcanoes, Sundoro-Sumbing and Merbabu-Merapi.

Merapi Volcano, in Bahasa Indonesia means “Fire Volcano”. One of the most active volcanoes in Asia region, it erupted in 2006 and 2010, and remains active today. For our adventurous traveller, an ideal hike would be to explore the beauty and tranquility of the volcano. You will discover two lava-formed ravines and the Sisa Hartaku Museum which displays historic items damaged by previous eruptions.
