Introduction

Hook: Did you know that English was not the first language spoken in the British Isle? Or the second?

Topic: The English LanguageBody 1: A (very) brief (partial) historyBody 2: Modern words and their originBody 3: British pronunciation(s)

Body 1 - A (very) brief (partial) historyOld English• Celts - the first known inhabitants of the British Isles. They spoke Celtic languages.• The Romans ruled for 500 years. Upper classes spoke Latin.• The Germanic tribes were the Jutes, Saxons, Angles, and Frisians. The languages spoken by the Germanic tribes resulted in the emergence of the English language.• The Viking Age lasted for around 200 years – they fought the Saxons. They also affected the language.• 85% of OE (Anglo Saxon English) words are no longer in use.Middle English• The Norman Conquest was the biggest influence on the English language than any other period.• For 200 years French was the language of ordinary intercourse among the upper class in England. • Chaucer (known as the father of English Literature) was a prominent name in literature.• Middle English went through changes in grammar and pronunciation.• During the 15th century a written standard English began to emerge.Modern English• William Shakespeare was an important influence on the language in this period.• The first English dictionary was first published in 1604.• Also due to colonialism from the 16th century onwards, the British came into contact with people from around the world; this added some interesting words to the lexicon.• At the beginning of the Late Modern English period, the British empire covered around a quarter of the world, hence lots of borrowing from other languages took place.

Body 2 - Modern words and their origins• 85% of OE words are no longer in use.• As a result of the Middle English period 70% of modern vocabulary are loan words.

Body 3 - British pronunciation(s)• RP spoken by those educated in public schools. It is a class, not regional dialect.• In Britain there are a greater number of regional dialects.• This goes back to the early history of language when communication and travel between places that were really quite close together was difficult.

Conclusion • Spoken by more than 380,000,000 people in the UK, USA and the former British Empire, English is the largest of all the western languages.• It is also widely used as a 2nd language, and as a foreign language throughout the world.• With the rise of new technologies, and political and economic influences it is going to be interesting to see how English evolves in the future.
