POWER WINDOWS
Pow er w indow operation has changed w ith the addition of the central pow er w indowsw itch located in the console betw een the w indow sw itches on the left side. The central
sw itch allow s all four w indow s to be opened w ith one touch operation or closed if thesw itch is held.
The balance of the w indow sw itches allow one touch operation for opening. The driver’sw indow sw itch is the only one touch close sw itch due to the elim ination of the anti-trap pro-tection feature.
The pow er w indow s are also opened w hen the top is low ered for approxim ately 1.5 sec-onds to ensure clearance w hen the top is low ered into the storage com partm ent. If the topsw itch is held after opening, the w indow s w ill close again.

CENTRAL LOCKING
The glove box is integrated into the scope of the central locking system on the E46iC . Anadditional actuator is positioned above the glove box to lock it w henever the central lock-
ing system is activated. Additionally, the trunk is locked out w henever the top storage coveris unlocked w hile the top is being raised or low ered. The top storage cover m otor hall sen-sor signals the G M any tim e the cover is unlocked.
The C VM receives a signal from the G M over the K-B us, w henever the trunk is opened,w hich locks out the soft top operation.
A m icro sw itch on the glove box lock cylinder signals the G M to lock the trunk electricallyfor the valet key position. The trunk can only be opened m echanically w ith either FZV keyor the w allet key.
All other functions of the central locking system rem ain the sam e as the E46 Sedan andC oupe.
The antenna for the FZV system is incorporated w ith the receiver in the interior rear viewm irror.

ANTI-THEFT ALARM DWA
Purpose of the System:
A new design interior sensor is used w ith the D W A system in the E46iC . It allow s the inte-rior of the vehicle to be m onitored w ith either the top raised or low ered. The balance of theD W A system rem ains the sam e as the system used in the C oupes and Sedans. The E46iCuses tw o interior sensors for m axim um vehicle protection.
Components of the System:
SDR Module
The Short D istance R adar (SD R ) sensor is a m otion detector based on m icrow ave tech-
nology. The SD R m odules are located on the drive shaft tunnel under the center console, one sensor in front of the M R S control m odule and the second sensor under the rear ashtray. This central positioning allow s the m ost effective m onitoring of the vehicle’s interior.
The m odules consist of tw oprinted circuit boards w ithone being the transm ittingand receiving aerials and
the other being the pro-cessing electronics. Thehousing of the m odule ism ade from highly conduc-tive m aterial in term s of highfrequency transm ission.
System Operation
The SD R sensor produces and transm its, via the transm itting antenna, an electrom agnet-ic field in a hem ispherical pattern w ithin the vehicles interior. The m onitoring radius is pre-set in the SD R m odule. The receiving antenna m onitors any reflected signals from thistransm ission and the m odule evaluates these signals as a base line for vehicle security. Anyobjects that com e w ithin this m onitoring radius w ith be detected and evaluated by them odule. The m odule w ill then signal the G M to trigger the alarm w arning.

The m odule operates by m eans of a continuous pulse m ode (pulse radar) w hich involvestransm itting a signal, then pausing for the reflected signals to be received by the m odule.
The detection range of the sensor is adjusted by a rapid sw itching process w hen the sys-tem is arm ed. This allow s the sensor to adjust its range to either the w indshield w ith the toplow ered or the soft top w hen it is raised.
The SD R sensor can be sw itched O FF by activating the central locking system tw ice w ith-in 10 seconds as w ith the U IS m otion detector on other D W A system s.
False alarm s m ay be triggered by objects falling into the interior w hen the system is arm edw ith the top low ered.
Large m etal objects w ill shield the m icrow ave transm ission and create a shadow effect inthe interior (for exam ple: the seat back).

LIGHTING CIRCUITS
The E46iC uses N eon technology for the third brake light w hich is m ounted in the trunk lid.The rem ainder of the exterior lighting circuits carry over from the E46 Sedan and
C oupes. The Electronic brake light sw itch is the input to the LSZ for brake light activation. The LSZ, as an output, provides pow er to the N eon light m odule for activation of the light. The light m odule consists of the ignitor, and N eon tube.
NEONTECHNOLOGY:
N eon (sym bol N e) produces a glow in a vacuum electric-discharge tube and is usedextensively in the fam iliar advertising displays.
A neon light is a glass bulb or tube containing neon (gaseous elem ent) at low pressure,
and tw o m etallic electrodes. To m ake a neon light, the tube is bent w hile w arm ed, to thedesired shape and sealed at both ends. D uring the sealing process, electrodes are addedat each end. An access port is left near one end and a vacuum is applied to the interiorof the tube. After the air and hum idity has been rem oved, the neon gas is added underlow pressure and the tube is sealed.
The light produces a reddish-orange glow w hen an electric current (applied across theelectrodes) is raised in voltage to the point at w hich it ionizes the gas in the tube. Thevoltage at w hich the light glow s varies w ith the design of the tube. W hen the glass tube isionized, the voltage drop across the tube is constant, regardless of the am ount of currentflow ing through the tube. The neon glow s w ith an even intensity throughout the length ofthe tube.
A variant of this is the glass tube containing ionized neon at very low pressure. The tubeshines w ith a brilliant red glow if a high-voltage alternating current is applied to the elec-trodes sealed in the ends of the tube.

LIGHTING CIRCUITS
The use of neon lighting provides several advantages to autom obile m anufacturers andconsum ers:
•Light failures caused by shock and vibration are m inim ized, because neon operatesw ithout a filam ent.
•The average life of the light is considerably higher as com pared to incandescent bulbs.
•Styling of the light includes a m ore uniform distribution of light across the lens, andneon tubes can be bent to conform to the contour of the vehicle.
•Am ber neon allow s the use of a clear lens (for vehicle color schem es).
•N eon enhances safety because of the extrem ely fast ignition tim e of the light(instantaneous braking signal), allow ing other drivers m ore tim e to react.

System Operation
The rear defroster operation rem ains a function of the IH KA system w ith the control m od-ule responsible for sw itching the system O N /O FF. Tw o rear defrosted grids are used, one
installed in the soft top rear glass and the other in the optional hard top rear glass.
W hen the button is pressed on the IH KA control panel, R elay R H H is energized. If the hardtop is installed, pow er is supplied to the grid through the connector strip on the hard toplock.
R elay R H H also supplies K L 30 to relay R H V w hen the button is pressed on the IH KA con-trol panel. R elay R H V is energized w hen K L R is sw itched O N and the soft top is closedand locked to the w indshield fram e. This allow s the grid in the soft top to be heated. W henthe soft top is low ered, KL R to relay R H V is interrupted by the C VM to prevent the gridfrom heating w hen the top is low ered into the storage com partm ent.
The H arm on/Karden radio am plifier receives a high signal from relay R H V, w hen the top israised and locked, and the H arm on stereo sound is sw itched O N . If the top is low ered, theam plifier receives a low signal and the stereo sound is sw itched O FF.
