Closing the tank cap:Fit the tank cap and turn clockwise untilit is clearly heard to click into place(bayonet catch).

Fuel tank capacity: approx. 70 litres(approx. 15.4 Imp. gal.), includingreserve capacity:

> with 4- and 6-cylinder engine:approx. 8 litres (approx. 1.8 Imp. gal.)

> with 8-cylinder engine: approx.10 litres (approx. 2.2 Imp. gal.)

Use unleaded fuel

The engine requires exclusivelyunleaded fuel, which may be of theultra-low sulphur type. Since theengines have a knock control function, they can run on different grades of fuel.

Your BMW's engine is rated to run on:

> Super Plus/premium plus fuel(octane number 98, Research

Method).

Fill up with petrol of this grade when-ever possible, so that the nominalperformance and fuel consumptionvalues are achieved.

You can also run the engine on:

> Premium-grade unleaded fuel(octane number 95, ResearchMethod).

This fuel is also known as:DIN EN 228 or Euro-Super.

The minimum permissible grade is:

> Regular-grade unleaded fuel(octane number 91 RON).

Never use fuel containing lead,as the oxygen sensor and the

converter will otherwise be permanentlydamaged.<

National-market versionssupplied to run on leaded fuel*

In addition to the grades listed on theleft, you can run the engine on leadedfuel. The minimum grade is likewise91 RON.

Diesel engines

> Diesel oil to DIN EN 590 standard.

Do not use rapeseed oil methylester (RME) or Biodiesel, or you

risk damaging the engine.<

Winter-grade diesel

To ensure that the diesel engine oper-ates reliably during the cold season ofthe year, it must be run on winter-gradediesel oil, which garages usually sellduring the period in question. Fuel filterheating is installed as standard equip-ment to prevent the fuel from solidifyingduring operation.

No additives may be used, asthese could cause damage to the

engine.<

The tyre pressures are also displayedon the driver's door post (visible withthe driver's door open).

Checking tyre pressures

All tyre pressures in the tables on thefollowing pages are shown in the mostcommon units of measurement bar(kPa/psi) for tyres at ambient tempera-ture.

When towing a trailer, always use thevalues for the higher load.

Cars with Tyre Pressure Control(RDC)*:After correcting tyre pressures, reacti-vate the system; see page 105.

390de697

Check tyre pressures regularly (atleast every two weeks and before

starting a long journey). Incorrect tyrepressures can adversely affect the car'sroadholding and cause tyre damage, which could result in an accident.Remember to check the spare wheeltyre pressure as well. The highest pres-sure needed for any of your car's tyresshould be used as the pressure for thespare wheel.<

Make sure that only approvedtyres are fitted

These tyre pressures apply to sizes andmakes of tyre approved by BMW andknown to BMW Service. If other makesof tyre are fitted to the car, higher tyrepressures may be needed.

The set of keys

1 Master key with remote control:For choice of Key Memory functions, see page 64In conjunction with this, you canidentify the keys with the colouredstickers supplied with the car

Each master key contains a long-life battery that is automatically

recharged while the car is being driven. For this reason, you should drive thecar at least once a year for a significantdistance using any master keys thathave not been in regular use, so thattheir batteries can be recharged. Seealso page 35.<

2 Spare key, to be kept in a safe place, for instance in a purse or wallet. Thiskey is not intended for regular use

3 Key for doors and ignitionThis key does not open the luggagecompartment lid/tailgate or the glovebox this can be useful for instanceat a hotel or restaurant with carparking service

The principle

The central locking system cannot takeeffect until both front doors are closed. The following are unlocked and lockedin combination:

> Doors> Luggage compartment lid/tailgateand rear window*

> Tank flap.

The central locking system can beoperated

> From outside the car at the door lockor with the remote control

> From inside using a button.

When operated from the outside, thedeadlocks are engaged at the sametime. This prevents the doors frombeing unlocked either at the safety lockbuttons or door handles. The alarmsystem* is also activated or deacti-vated.

In the event of a collision, the centrallocking system is released automati-cally, but only at doors which were notlocked separately by means of theinside buttons; see page 37. Thehazard warning flashers and interiorlight are also switched on.

The principle

The alarm system reacts if:

> A door, the engine compartment, theluggage compartment lid/tailgate orthe rear window are opened

> There is any movement inside the car(interior movement detector)

> The car's angle changes, for instanceif an attempt is made to jack it up andsteal the wheels or to raise it prior totowing away

> There is an interruption in the powersupply from the battery.

Depending on the national-marketversion of the car, the alarm systemindicates unauthorised entry ortampering in different ways:

> 30-second acoustic alarm> Switching on the hazard warningflashers for approx. five minutes*.

Activating and deactivating

Whenever the car is locked orunlocked, either at the lock or with theremote control, the alarm system isactivated or deactivated at the sametime.

You can arrange for various kindsof signal to be generated as

confirmation that the system has beenactivated and deactivated correctly.<

Even if the system has been activated, you can open the luggage compartmentlid/tailgate by pressing the remotecontrol button (see page 36). When it isclosed, the lid/tailgate is automaticallyprotected again.

> If the indicator light flashes for10 seconds when the system isdeactivated, an attempt was madeto tamper with the car.

After the alarm has stopped, the indi-cator light once again flashes intermit-tently.

Avoiding unintentional alarms

The tilt alarm sensor and the interiormovement detector can be switched offtogether. This prevents false alarms, forinstance in two-level garages or whenthe car travels by train or ferry:

Lock (activate) the system twice, bypressing button 2 on the remote controltwice in succession; see page 36, orperform the locking movement twicewith the key; see page 33.The indicator light comes on briefly, then flashes continuously. The tilt alarmsensor and interior movement detectorare then switched off until the system isdeactivated again.

Interior movement detector

Before the interior movement detectorcan operate correctly, the windows andsliding/tilt sunroof must be closed.

However, switch off the interior move-ment detector first (see previouscolumn) if

> Children or animals remain in the car>Windows or the sunroof are to remainopen.

The tilt alarm sensor and the inte-rior movement detector will be

switched off unintentionally if conven-ient closure of the windows and sunroofis interrupted during the first 10 secondsand then restarted. In this case thecomplete system must be deactivatedand re-activated.<

A seated position that suitably reflectsyour requirements is a vital condition ofrelaxed, fatigue-free driving. In conjunc-tion with the seat belts and the airbags, the correct seated position enhancesthe passive safety of the car's occu-pants in the event of an accident. Youshould therefore observe the followingnotes in order to maintain the protectivefunction of the car's safety systems.

For additional notes on carrying chil-dren, see page 61.

Correct seated position in relationto airbags

Keep your distance from theairbags. Always grip the steering

wheel on the rim, to minimise the risk ofinjury to the hands and arms in theevent of the airbag being triggered off.No other persons, pets or objectsshould be held or permitted to remainbetween the airbags and yourself. Donot use the front airbag cover on thefront passenger's side as a tray, norrest your feet or legs on it.<

The locations of the airbags and addi-tional notes are given on page 60.

Safe travel with seat belt

Only one person should berestrained by each seat belt;

babies and small children must nottravel sitting on the lap of an occupantof the car. The belts should not betwisted and must be positioned firmlyover the pelvis and shoulder, as closeto the body as possible. They shouldnot pass over hard or fragile objects inyour pockets. The seat belt must notrun across the wearer's neck, norshould it be trapped or abraded bycoming into contact with sharp edgesor objects. Avoid bulky clothing andremember to tauten the lap beltfrequently where it runs over theshoulder. In the event of a head-oncollision, the lap belt could otherwiseslide over the hips and injure the lowerpart of the body. In addition, therestraining effect is reduced if the seatbelt is slack against the wearer's body.Pregnant women should also wear theseat belt, making sure that the lap strapis well down on the hips and does notpress on the abdominal region of thebody.<

For details of operating the seat belts, see page 54.

Before adjusting, note:

Do not reposition the driver's seatwhile the car is in motion. The seat

could move unexpectedly, leading tothe driver losing control of the car, sothat an accident could be caused. Donot recline the seat back too far whenthe car is being driven (this applies inparticular to the front passenger), orthere will be a risk of "submarining"under the seat belt, so that the beltloses its full protective effect.Do not slide the seats to the rear if thecar is standing on a slope, for instancea ramp leading to a garage or a steephill. This could lead to the automaticseat belt height adjuster becomingdisconnected.<

1 Front airbags on the driver's and frontpassenger's side

2 Head-level airbags on the driver'sand front passenger's side (for frontand rear*)

3 Side airbags on the driver's and frontpassenger's side (front and rear*)

Protective effect

The front airbags protect the driver andfront passenger in the event of a frontalcrash, if the protective action of theseat belts alone would be insufficient. The head-level and side airbagsprovide protection in the event of aside-on collision. The side airbag whichinflates has the effect of supporting theupper body from the side.

380de643

For details of the correct seated posi-tion, see page 49.

The airbags are not triggered off inminor accidents, nor if the car rolls

over or is struck from the rear.<

Never attach any material to theairbag covers with adhesive, place

material over them or modify them inany way. Do not dismantle the airbagoccupant restraint system. If the airbagoccupant restraint system developsa fault, is shut down out of use orhas been triggered off in an accident, have it checked, repaired or dismantledonly by BMW Service. Never make anymodifications to the individual compo-nents of the system or its wiring. Thisincludes the upholstered covers on thesteering wheel, instrument panel, sidepanels on front and rear doors and roofstruts as well as down the sides of theroof liners. Do not remove the steeringwheel. In order to comply with validsafety regulations, have airbag genera-tors scrapped only by BMW Service.Any careless or unskilled interferencewith the system could lead to its failureor to accidental triggering off with therisk of injury. Avoid touching the

system's components immediately afterit has been triggered off, as there is arisk of sustaining burns.<

Even if all these instructions arecomplied with, injury to the face, armsor hands as a result of the airbaginflating cannot be entirely ruled out, depending on the circumstances inwhich an accident occurs. If the car'soccupants are unduly sensitive to theignition and inflation noise generated bythe airbag systems, their hearing maybe temporarily affected.

How it works

You have probably wished at times thatindividual functions of your car could beindividually selected or adjusted to suityour own personal preferences. Whendeveloping the car, BMW therefore"designed in" a number of freelyprogrammable options for the car, which BMW Service will gladly adjustas you wish.

463de029

There are "Car Memory" and "KeyMemory" settings, the former relating tothe car itself, the latter to your personalrequirements. You can have twodifferent basic settings selected if twopeople regularly drive the car. Thispresupposes that each person has hisor her own remote control key.

By means of data exchange with thekey, the car identifies the user when thecar is unlocked and performs thenecessary adjustments.

Coloured adhesive labels are suppliedwith the keys so that they can be identi-fied by the users.

Cars with spark-ignition engine

Do not press the accelerator pedalwhile starting the engine.

Allow the starter motor to run for areasonable time, but for no more

than about 20 seconds. As soon as theengine fires, release the ignition key.BMW 535iA, 540iA:Your BMW is equipped with a conven-ient-start system. It is sufficient to turnthe ignition key briefly to position 3 (tooperate the starter motor), then torelease it.The starter then runs automatically for apredetermined period, and cuts out assoon as the engine has started. If the battery voltage is low, automaticstarting cannot be activated, or thefunction is interrupted. The engine canbe jump started (see page 173).<

Do not warm up the engine with the carat a standstill; it is preferable to set offstraight away, driving at moderateengine speeds.

If the engine does not start at the firstattempt, for instance when it isextremely hot or cold:

> Depress the accelerator pedalhalfway while starting the engine.

Cold starts at very low ambient temper-atures (below approx. 156) at highaltitude (more than 1,000 m (approx.3,250 ft) above sea level):

> On the first occasion, take longerover the starting operation (approx.10 seconds)

Excessively lengthy or frequentoperation of the starter motor at

short intervals can result in damage tothe catalytic converter.<

Make sure that when driving thecar, standing with the engine

running or when parking, no easilyflammable material (hay, grass, leavesetc.) comes into contact with the hotexhaust system. It could ignite andcause a fire, with the risk of severeinjuries or damage.<

Cars with diesel engine

When the engine is cold:

> Hold the ignition key in position 2until the preheat indicator light ordisplay goes out

> Start the engine. At extremely low temperatures, thestarter motor may have to be run forup to 40 seconds.

When the engine is warm:

> The preheat indicator light or displaydoes not come on. Start the engineimmediately.

Movement of the accelerator pedal hasno influence on the starting process.

Do not allow the engine to warm up at astandstill, but drive off as soon aspossible, using moderate enginespeeds.

Bleeding the fuel system: even if thefuel tank has been run dry, the fuelsystem does not normally need to bebled.

If you nevertheless encounter difficul-ties in starting the engine:

> Run the starter motor for approx.20 seconds.

Turn the ignition key back to 1 or 0.

BMW 520d, 525d, 530d:When the engine is cold, a fuel-burningauxiliary heater is used to warm thecar's interior more rapidly. Its exhaustfumes are discharged under the doorsill on the driver's side.If the engine is stopped before it hasreached its regular operating tempera-ture, the auxiliary heater continues torun for a short time, and thereforeproduces exhaust fumes.

Never remove the ignition keywhile the car is still moving, as

otherwise the steering lock will engage. When leaving the car, always removethe ignition key and lock the ignitionlock.Manual-gearbox cars:When parking on a slope, apply thehandbrake, because even engagingfirst or reverse gear may not reliablyprevent the car from rolling away.Automatic transmission cars:Select position P.<

The handbrake is primarily intended forpreventing a stationary vehicle fromrolling away, and acts on the rearwheels.

Applying

The lever engages automatically andthe indicator light on the instrumentpanel lights up in ignition keyposition 2, see page 18.

Releasing

Raise slightly, press the knob and movethe lever down.

390de714

In exceptional cases, if the hand-brake has to be used to slow or

stop the car, do not pull the lever up toohard. Keep the knob on the lever held inall the time.Too violent an application of the hand-brake could over-brake the rear wheelsand cause the rear of the car to skid. The brake lights do not come on whenthe handbrake is applied.Manual-gearbox cars:When parking on a slope, apply thehandbrake, because even engagingfirst or reverse gear may not reliablyprevent the car from rolling away.Automatic transmission cars:Select position P.<

To prevent corrosion or an imbalancebetween the brakes on the right and leftside, apply the handbrake lightly fromtime to time when coasting to a stand-still, for instance at traffic lights, provided that it is safe to do so.

The principle

PDC assists you when manoeuvringinto a parking space. Audible warningsignals indicate when the car isapproaching an obstacle. Four ultra-sonic sensors in the front and four inthe rear bumper measure the distancefrom the nearest object. The range ofthe sensors at the front of the car and atthe two rear corners ends approx.60 cm (approx. 2 ft) away from thebumper. The centre sensors at the rearhave a range of approx. 1.50 m (approx.5 ft).

If the car is towing a trailer, the rearsensors clearly cannot supply sensiblesignals and therefore remain switchedoff.

Automatic function

In ignition key position 2, the system isactivated automatically after approx. 1second when reverse gear is selectedor the automatic transmission selectorlever moved to R.

Switching on manually

Press the button, the indicator lightcomes on.

After a distance of approx. 50 m(approx. 164 ft) has been covered or aspeed of approx. 30 km/h (approx.20 mph) is exceeded, the system is de-activated and the indicator light goesout. Switch the system on again asnecessary.

Switching off manually

Press the button again.

390de701

Audible warning signals

The distance from an obstruction isindicated by a higher intermittentaudible signal for the front end, and alower-pitched intermittent audiblesignal for the rear end. The closer thecar approaches the obstruction, themore rapid the sequence of signals. When the distance is less than 30 cm(approx. 12 in), the signal becomescontinuous.

The signal is interrupted after approx.3 seconds if you are driving parallel to awall.

The system has developed a malfunc-tion if:The indicator light flashes and a contin-uous tone is emitted briefly

>When you switch on PDC at thebutton

>When you engage reverse or selectorlever position R for the first time afterswitching on the ignition

> If the malfunction occurs while PDCis active.

Switch off the system and have thecause of the malfunction rectified byBMW Service.

PDC is no substitute for yourpersonal assessment of obstruc-

tions. The sensors have certain "deadareas" in which objects cannot alwaysbe detected. In addition, the identifica-tion of objects may not be possible ifthe physical limits of the ultrasonicmeasuring principle are exceeded, forinstance in the case of trailer towhitches and towbars, and also otherthin or wedge-shaped objects.Loud sound sources such as loudradios can overpower the PDC signaltone.<

Keep the sensors clean and freefrom ice, so that they always

operate reliably.Do not spray the sensors for any lengthof time with a high-pressure cleaningjet. Keep such jets at least 10 cm(approx. 4 in) away from the sensors.<

Automatic Stability Control plusTraction (ASC+T)/DynamicStability Control (DSC)*

These systems ensure additionaldynamic stability, particularly whenaccelerating and cornering.

The DSC adds to the advantages ofASC+T. In addition to achievingoptimum dynamic stability when accel-erating and starting from a standstill,a gain in stability is obtained whencornering. Note however that the caralways remains subject to the limitsimposed by the basic laws of dynamics.

The system is in operation wheneverthe engine has been started.

Dynamic Brake Control (DBC)*

DBC is part of DSC.

If the brake pedal is pressed downrapidly, this system automaticallyboosts the braking force to a maximumand thus helps to pull the car up in theshortest possible distance when a fullbrake application is made. It alsomakes full use of the advantagesoffered by ABS.

Maintain pressure on the brake pedalduring the entire brake application. Ifthe brake pedal is released, DBC will beswitched off.

This system automatically ensures thatmovement of the road wheels isdamped according to the car's needs, and therefore enhances both ridecomfort and safety.

Automatic control

Automatic control is activated eachtime the engine is started. It takes effectover the entire road-speed range andregardless of the load on the car. If theinfluencing factors change (roadsurface quality or operating conditionssuch as steering, braking etc.), thedamping action is modified automati-cally in a fraction of a second to suit thenew situation.

The self-levelling suspensionwarning light comes on and theCheck Control displays the

"SELFLEVEL SUSP.INACT": the self-levelling suspension is malfunctioning.

Stop the car and examine it. If the bodyis distinctly lower at the back than atthe front, and possibly standing at anangle (for instance, lower at the leftthan at the right), take it to the nearestBMW Service. Drive cautiously whilethe car is in this condition. The car'sground clearance is reduced and itsride comfort below the usual standard.

Even if the car appears to be at itsnormal ride height and attitude, alwaystake it to BMW Service if a malfunctionis displayed.

The principle

RDC monitors the air pressure in all fourtyres, including when the car is beingdriven. The system reports any suddenloss of pressure in one or more tyres.

So that the system can identify thecorrect tyre pressures, first check theseagainst the tyre pressure tables startingon page 25 and correct them if neces-sary. Then activate the system.

This indicator light on the instru-ment panel or the Check Controlinforms you whenever tyre pres-

sure is not normal.

Activating the system

1. Turn the ignition key to position 2(do not start the engine)

2. Keep the button pressed in until theyellow indicator light on the instru-ment panel comes on for a fewseconds or the Check Controldisplays "SET TYRE PRESSURE"

3. After the car has been driven for afew minutes, RDC adopts the actualtyre pressure as the desired value tobe monitored.

You do not need to repeat this proce-dure unless the tyre pressures havebeen corrected in the meantime. Thesystem will be activated automaticallyeach time the ignition key is inposition 2 and therefore each time thecar is driven.

If there is a loss of tyre pressure

If the tyre pressure has dropped too farin the course of time (quite normal onany tyre), the indicator light comes onyellow or the message "CHECK TYREPRESSURE" appears in the CheckControl.

This is to remind you that the tyre pres-sure should be corrected to the speci-fied values again as soon as possible.

If you are asked to check tyrepressures shortly after correcting

them, the corrected pressure valueswere not plausible. Please check thetyre pressures again and correct themto the values specified in the tyre pres-sure table. After this, re-activate thesystem.<

With a burst tyre

If you suffer a tyre defect involving lossof pressure, the red indicator comes on,or the message "TYRE DEFECT"appears in the Check Control. In addi-tion, a gong sounds.

When this occurs, slow down to a stopimmediately, avoiding harsh brakingand steering manoeuvres. Replace thedefective wheel with tyre.

The spare wheel supplied asstandard with your car is

equipped with the necessary RDC elec-tronics and is therefore also monitoredautomatically after fitting, when thesystem has been activated.<

RDC is unable to warn the driverof sudden, severe tyre damage

caused by outside influences.<

Have your tyres changed by BMWService.

BMW Service has the necessary infor-mation and special tools for mainte-nance of the RDC system.<

Faults

While there is a fault in the system, theindicator light comes on yellow or themessage "TYRECONTROL INACTIVE"appears in the Check Control.

The same display appears

> In the event of a system fault> If a wheel not equipped with RDC isfitted to the car

> If one or more wheels equipped withRDC electronics are carried on thecar in addition to the spare wheel.

Temperature

The scale values are guidefigures for the interior temper-ature. 226 has been foundto be a pleasant setting. When

the car is in motion, the selectedtemperature is reached as soon aspossible and held constant.

Air distribution

You can direct the air to thewindows , onto the upperbody and into the foot-wells . Any intermediate

setting is possible. In position asmall amount of air continues to reachthe windows in order to prevent themfrom fogging over.

Air supply

The airflow volume can becontinuously varied. Thegreater the incoming flow ofair, the more effective heating

and ventilation will be. In position 0 theblower and air conditioning areswitched off and the fresh air supplyfrom outside the car is entirely shut off.

Heated rear window

When the heated rearwindow is switched on, the

indicator light comes on. The heatedrear window switches itself off automat-ically.

Cooling

Air is cooled and dried whenthe air conditioning is

switched on, then re-heated to suitthe temperature setting. Dependingon weather conditions, the windscreenmay fog over momentarily when theengine is started. Switching on the airconditioning system reduces this effect.

Moisture condensate forms in theair conditioning and is discharged

underneath the car. Traces of water onthe ground are therefore normal.<

Recirculated air mode

If there are strong smellsoutside, you can shut off the

supply of outside air for temporaryperiods. The air inside the car is thenrecirculated.

If your car has a multifunctional steeringwheel with recirculated air button, thiscan also be used to shut off theincoming airflow (see page 20).

If the windows mist up in recircu-lating mode, switch this mode off

and, if necessary, also increase the airsupply.<

Auxiliary heater

BMW 520d, 525d, 530d:When the engine is cold, there is a fuel-burning auxiliary heater for warming upthe car's interior more rapidly. Itsexhaust fumes are discharged underthe door sill on the driver's side.If the engine is stopped before it hasreached its regular operating tempera-ture, the auxiliary heater continues torun for a short time, and thereforeproduces exhaust fumes.

A pleasant interior temperature

Use the automatic system, i.e. switchon AUTO button 6. Select the interiortemperature which you find mostagreeable.

The description below tells you how toobtain various settings which may beindividually preferred.

When your car is unlocked withthe remote control using a

personal key, your preferred air condi-tioning settings will be restored auto-matically.<

Automatic air distribution

The AUTO programhandles the setting of air

distribution for you and also adaptsyour temperature preferences to suitambient conditions (summer, winter).

Individual air distribution

You can also select yourpreferred combination of airdistribution settings andthus switch off the AUTOprogram; the automatic air

supply, however, is automatically main-tained. Air flows on to the windows ,to the upper body zone and to thefootwell . However, you can switchthe automatic air distribution back onby pressing the AUTO button.

Temperature

You can also select yourown individual temperaturesetting on the driver's and

front passenger's sides of the car. Thedisplayed values are a guide to theactual interior temperature. 226 isrecommended as a pleasant setting, whether or not the air conditioning isin operation. During the journey, thechosen temperature is reached asquickly as possible in summer and inwinter and maintained at a constantvalue.

Air supply

In the AUTO program, airsupply is controlled auto-

matically; AUTO appears in display 9 see the summary on page 114. Using"+" and "" you can vary the air supply.Your entry is indicated by a bar display, the automatic air supply is switched offand the automatic airflow distributionsystem remains unchanged. However, you can switch the automatic air supplysystem back on by pressing the AUTObutton.

In the lowest fan setting, if you press"", all displays disappear: the blower, heater and air conditioning areswitched off and the air supply isclosed. The automatic air conditioningcan be switched on again by pressingany button (except MAX button 16).

Defrosting and demistingwindows

This program removes iceand condensation quickly

from the windscreen and from the sidewindows.

Air conditioning

Air is cooled and driedwhen the air conditioning

is switched on, then is heated back upto suit the temperature setting.Depending on weather conditions, thewindscreen may fog over momentarilywhen the engine is started. Switchingon the air conditioning system reducesthis effect.

Moisture condensate forms in theair conditioning and is discharged

underneath the car. Traces of water onthe ground are therefore normal.<

Maximum cooling effect

This program enables yourapidly to achieve

maximum cooling effect when theengine is running, at outside tempera-tures of approx. 56 upwards.

The temperature displays 9 jump to166, the system switches to the recir-culated-air mode and air emerges atthe maximum flow rate from the ventila-tion grilles only. Be sure to keep thesegrilles open when you select thisprogram.

Automatic Recirculated AirControl (AUC)

If the air outside the carhas an unpleasant odour

or contains pollutants, you can shut offthe supply to the interior of the cartemporarily. The air inside the car isthen recirculated. Obtain the desiredoperating mode by pressing the buttonas often as necessary.

> Indicator lights off: airflow fromoutside the car

> Left indicator light on AUC opera-tion: the system identifies pollutantsin the outside air and shuts off thesupply if necessary. The air inside thecar is then recirculated. After this, the automatic systemswitches between outside air supplyand recirculated air according to theavailable air quality

> Right indicator light on: the outsideair supply is permanently shut off.The air inside the car is recirculated.

If your car has a multifunctional steeringwheel with recirculated air switch (seepage 20), you can use it to changebetween "Off" and the recirculated airmode (or between AUC and the recircu-lated air mode).

If the windows mist up in recircu-lated mode, switch this mode off

and, if necessary, also increase the airsupply.<

Heated rear window

When the heated rearwindow is switched on, the

indicator light comes on. The heatedrear window switches itself off automat-ically.

Residual heat utilisation

Heat from the engine isstored and used to heat

the car's interior when the ignition isswitched off, for instance when waitingat a level crossing.

In ignition key position 1, you can alterthe automatic air conditioning settings. In ignition key position 0, the heated airis directed automatically to the wind-screen, side windows and footwells.

This function can be activated ifthe outside temperature is below

approx. 156, the engine is at itsregular operating temperature and thebattery is sufficiently charged. The LEDin the button comes on if all theseconditions are met.<

Draught-free ventilation

The outlets for the occupants' upperbody area can be adjusted to suit yourpersonal preferences:

1 Knurled wheels for opening andclosing the air outlets continuously

2 Levers for altering the airflow angle

3 The knurled wheel allows you to varythe temperature of the airflow:> Turn towards the blue mark cooler

> Turn towards the red mark warmer.

If your car has an auxiliary fuel-burningheater, it is also equipped with inde-pendent ventilation control. Cars arealso supplied with independent ventila-tion control only.

Both systems are operated via theMulti-Information Display (MID) (seepage 88) or the on-board computer. There is a separate Owner's Handbookfor the on-board computer.

Two different switch-on times can bepreselected, so that you can be surethat the car's interior is warm when it isnext entered. Snow and ice are alsoeasier to remove from the windows.

The auxiliary heater runs for 30 minutes. It can also be switched on and offdirectly. Since its current consumptionis high, it should not be run twice insuccession unless there has in themeantime been an opportunity torecharge the car's battery by driving thecar.

The auxiliary fuel-burning heater can beoperated at outside temperaturesbelow 166 if the switch-on time ispreselected, or switched on directly atany outside temperature. This onlyapplies when the car is driven, however, until the engine has reachedits regular operating temperature.

The heated air is directed automaticallyto the windscreen, side windows andfootwell; maximum heating output isalways used.

In ignition key position 1 you can adjustthe interior temperature, air supply andair distribution. The auxiliary heater continues to run fora short period after it has beenswitched off (indicator light out).

Even during the warm season ofthe year the auxiliary heater

should be switched on directly aboutonce a month, then switched off againafter about 5 minutes.<

Do not operate the auxiliary heaterin confined spaces (closed

rooms). Always switch off the auxiliaryheater before refuelling the car.<

It can also beswitched on and off directly. Since itscurrent consumption is high, it shouldnot be run twice in succession unlessthere has in the meantime been anopportunity to recharge the car'sbattery by driving the car.Independent ventilation control can beoperated at any outside temperatureabove 166 if the switch-on time ispreselected, or switched on directly atany outside temperature, but not whenthe car is being driven.Air emerges from the variable-flow,controlled-direction outlets for theupper body zone on the fascia. The principle

The integrated universal remote controlreplaces up to three hand-held remotecontrols for various other systems ordevices, for example a gate opener, alarm or door locking system. The inte-grated universal remote control identi-fies and "learns" the signals transmittedby the original control devices.

The signal from an original hand-heldremote control can be programmed toone of the three channel buttons. Afterthis, the programmed channel buttonwill operate the system in question.Transmission of the signal is shown bythe indicator light.

Before selling the car, the channelbuttons should be erased, as describedon page 124.

During the programming operationand before a programmed system

is operated with the integrateduniversal remote control, make surethat no persons, animals or objects arewithin the system's range of movement,in order to avoid possible injury ordamage. Comply also with the safetyinstructions supplied with the originalremote control.<

The original hand-held remotecontrol

If this symbol appears on thepack or in the instructionssupplied with the original

remote control, you can assume that itwill be compatible with the integrateduniversal remote control.

Checking for alternating code

To check whether the original handheldremote control is equipped with analternating code system, either studythe instructions supplied with it orprogram a channel button as describedon page 123, left-hand column, underthe heading "Programming".

After this, hold down the programmedchannel button on the integrateduniversal remote control. If the indicatorlight on the integrated universal remotecontrol flashes rapidly for two secondsand then remains on, the originalcontrol device uses an alternating code.In this case, program the channelbuttons as described on page 123,right-hand column under the heading"Programming an alternating-codetransmitter".

The suspension settings of your BMWafford optimum safety, ride comfort andsports performance.

If a trailer tow hitch has been fitted bythe manufacturer, the vehicle will alsobe equipped with uprated suspension*at the rear as standard. This compen-sates for the weight of the tow hitchand also ensures optimum road behav-iour when the trailer is not being towed.

If a trailer tow hitch* is retrofitted, itmust be of a type approved by BMWand be expertly installed by BMWService. You are recommended to haveuprated suspension fitted as well.On models with self-levelling suspen-sion, the trailer-towing suspensionneed not be retrofitted.

BMW does not approve of any othersuspension systems offered by theautomotive trade for trailer towingpurposes.

The use of a stabilising device can berecommended, particularly if the traileris a heavy one. Information can beobtained from BMW Service.

Nose weight

This is the weight which the trailertowbar exerts downwards on the ballhead of the car's trailer tow hitch (it canfor example be measured with bath-room scales).

In Germany: a minimum nose weight of25 kg (55 lb) is laid down by law.

The nose weight limit (see page 185)may not be exceeded, but shouldalways be utilised to the full, in partic-ular when towing large, heavy trailerswhich are prone to swinging from sideto side.

The trailer's nose weight affects thetowing vehicle, and must not lead to thecar's gross weight limit or rear axle loadlimit being exceeded if a trailer is beingtowed. The car's payload limit isreduced by the weight of the trailer towhitch and, if a trailer is being towed, byits nose weight. The gross weight limitfor the combined car and trailer mustnot be exceeded.

Towing a trailer

The permissible trailer load and noseweight (towbar downthrust) are statedin "Technical data", page 185. Thetrailer load limit is also entered in thecar's registration papers. Consult BMWService regarding increased trailerweights.

Loads:When loading the trailer, make sure thatthe weight is kept as low down aspossible and stowed if possible close tothe axle.

A low centre of trailer gravity makes theoutfit much more stable and safe todrive.

Do not exceed either the trailer's grossweight or the specified trailer load limitfor the car. The smaller value is the limitwhich should be adhered to.

Before purchasing a trailer it is advis-able to obtain a declaration from thetrailer manufacturer concerning theeffective trailer weight and trailerpayload limit.

Gradients:In the interests of safety and to avoidholding up other traffic, do not attemptto climb gradients steeper than 12X.If an application is made to tow aheavier trailer, the limit is 8X.

BMW 520d, 525d, 530d:On vehicles with automatic trans-

mission, engage position "D" whenclimbing long inclines, otherwisebubbles may form in the fuel as a resultof overheating, causing the engine tostall.<

Downhill gradients:Special care must be taken whendescending gradients, as a trailer ismore susceptible to snaking. Alwaysshift down to the next-lower gearbefore downhill gradients or as fardown as 1st gear if necessary anddrive down the hill slowly.

Speed limit:The maximum speed limit when towinga trailer is 80 km/h (50 mph) inGermany, and similar speed limits applyin other countries also.

If the trailer begins to snake, the outfitcan only be stabilised by braking hardimmediately. Only attempt to steer outof the situation if this is absolutelyessential; make any steering move-ments as gently as possible.

Tyre pressures:Check the car's and the trailer's tyrepressures most carefully. For the trailer, comply with the manufacturer's recom-mendations.

Outside mirrors:Two outside mirrors which bring bothrear corners of the trailer into your fieldof view are required by law. Mirrors ofthis kind can be obtained from BMWService.

Electrical system

Higher electrical consumption canbe expected if a trailer (caravan) is

towed. Try to avoid operating electricalequipment for too long at a time, inorder to limit the drain on the car'sbattery.<

Before starting a journey, checkthat the trailer's rear lights are

operating correctly.<

Please comply with the followinginstructions, which are intended toensure that your car achieves itsoptimum operating life and economy.

Engine and final drive

Up to 2,000 km (approx. 1,300 miles):drive at varying road and enginespeeds, but do not exceed thefollowing maximum values:

> Cars with spark-ignition (petrol)engine6-cylinder: 4,500 rpm

or 160 km/h (100 mph)8-cylinder: 4,500 rpm

or 170 km/h (105 mph)

> Cars with diesel engine3,500 rpmor 150 km/h (93 mph)

Observe the national speed limits.

Avoid full throttle and do not use theautomatic transmission "kick-down".

From a distance reading of 2,000 km(approx. 1,300 miles) onwards, engineand road speeds can be graduallyincreased.

Comply with these running-in instruc-tions again if an exchange engine orfinal drive is fitted later in the car's life.

Tyres

New tyres do not achieve their full roadgrip immediately, for productionreasons. You should therefore drive in arestrained manner for the first 300 km(approx. 200 miles).

Braking system

Brake pads and discs do not achieve afavourable wear and contact patternuntil the car has covered about 500 km(approx. 300 miles).

Clutch

The clutch likewise needs to be run infor about 500 km (approx. 300 miles)before it will operate with maximumefficiency. Operate the clutch gentlywhile running it in.

Brakes:Do not rest your foot on the brake

pedal while the car is in motion. Evenslight continuous pressure on the brakepedal could cause overheating, brakepad wear or even brake system failure.Aquaplaning:When driving on wet or slushy surfaces, reduce speed to prevent a wedge ofwater from forming between the tyreand the road. This situation, known asaquaplaning, means that the tyre canactually lose contact completely withthe road surface, so that the car canneither be steered nor can the brakesbe properly applied.Water on the road:When there is water on the roads, drivethrough it only to a max. depth of 30 cm(approx. 12 in), and no faster thanwalking pace, otherwise the engine, electrical system and transmission maybe damaged.

Rear-window shelf:Do not leave any heavy or hard objectson the shelf, as they could be dislodgedby heavy braking or a sudden avoid-ance manoeuvre, and endanger thecar's occupants.Coat hooks:Items of clothing hung from the hooksmust not obstruct the driver's view. Donot hang any heavy objects from thehooks, as these could endanger thecar's occupants in the event of heavybraking or a sudden avoidancemanoeuvre.<

The principle

The antilock brake system (ABS)prevents the wheels from locking whenthe brakes are applied, and thusincreases active safety.

Braking with ABS

You use ABS most effectively byapplying maximum brake pressure insituations which call for this ("fullbraking"). Since the vehicle remainssteerable, you can avoid obstacles byturning the steering wheel as smoothlyas possible.

The pulsating sensation at the brakepedal, combined with the sound of thehydraulic system operating, indicatesthat ABS is intervening.

144n2')

Brake fluid level

If the brake fluid level is too low and ifbrake pedal travel is much greater thanusual, one of the two hydraulic brakecircuits may have failed.

Visit your nearest BMW Service.Increased brake pedal pressure

may be necessary, the car may "pull" toone side and longer braking distancesmay be required. Modify your drivingstyle accordingly.<

Disc brakes

If the car covers only short distances, stands out of use for lengthy periodsand is only used infrequently or gently, corrosion and dirt will affect the brakediscs and pads more severely, becausethe minimum loads needed to achievethe desired self-cleaning effect of thedisc brakes have not been reached.

When the brakes are applied, corrodeddiscs tend to judder, and even lengthybrake applications usually fail to elimi-nate this effect entirely.

In wet conditions or heavy rain, it is agood idea to apply the brakes lightlyfrom time to time. When doing so, makesure that no other road-user is endan-gered. The resulting heat dries thebrake discs and pads. The full brakingeffect will then be immediately availableif required.

You should select the gear which callsfor the least use of the brakes whendescending long or steep hills. Thisavoids overburdening the brakes andtherefore the risk of brake fade.

Never drive with the clutch pedalheld down, with the gear lever or

selector lever in neutral or with theengine switched off; engine brakingaction will not be present with thegearbox or transmission in neutral andthere will be no power assistance to thebrakes or steering while the engine isswitched off.Make sure that the full travel of thebrake, clutch and accelerator pedals isnot obstructed by floor mats, carpets orother objects.<

Brake pads

In the interests of your own safety, use only brake pads approved by

BMW for use on a specified type ofvehicle. If BMW has not approved thebrake pads it cannot assess their suita-bility or provide any guarantee of roadsafety.<

Information for your safety

The radial-ply tyres approved for yourcar are matched to its characteristicsand ensure not only optimum roadsafety but also the desired level of ridecomfort.

The condition of the tyres and mainte-nance of the correct tyre pressures notonly influence tyre life but are also deci-sive factors in ride quality and above allin road safety.

Incorrect pressures are often acause of tyre problems. They also

have a considerable effect on the road-holding of your BMW. Check tyre pres-sures including the spare wheel on aregular basis (see page 24), but at leasttwice a month and before setting out onany long journeys. Incorrect tyre pres-sures can adversely affect the car'sroadholding and cause tyre damage, which could result in an accident.<

Tyre tread tyre damage

Inspect the tyres frequently for damage, the presence of foreign bodies, unusualwear and sufficient tread depth.

Tread depth should if possible not beallowed to drop below 3 mm (approx.0.12 in), even though a minimum treaddepth of only 1.6 mm (approx. 0.06 in)is required by law. Wear indicators(arrow) in the base of the tread groove, the distribution of which is indicated onthe tyre's shoulder with TWI (TreadWear Indicator) indicate when a treaddepth of 1.6 mm (approx. 0.06 in) hasbeen reached; this is the legal limit fortyre wear. Below a tread depth of 3 mm(approx. 0.12 in) there is a risk of aqua-planing at fairly high road speeds evenif the water is not very deep.

390de331

Never continue driving with a flattyre. If air pressure is lost from a

tyre, this seriously affects the car'shandling and braking, and could causethe driver to lose control. Avoid over-loading the car, as this could causethe tyres' load capacity limit to beexceeded. Otherwise you could over-heat the tyres and cause internaldamage to them in the short to mediumterm. In some cases, this can result insudden loss of tyre pressure.Unusual vibration while the car is beingdriven could indicate a tyre fault orsome other defect on your car. Thismay occur e.g. when driving over a kerbor similar. The same applies to anyother abnormal road behaviour, such aspulling severely to the right or left. Insuch cases, reduce speed immediately.Proceed carefully to the nearest BMWService or tyre dealer, or have the cartowed there so that it can be checkedor its tyres or wheels inspected. All forms of tyre damage (which could inthe worst case lead to sudden and totalloss of pressure) represent a risk ofserious or even fatal injury to the car'soccupants and to all other road users.<

To maintain the car's good road behav-iour, always fit tyres of the same makeand tread pattern to all wheels. BMWtests and approves combinations ofwheels/tyres for use on your car.

Do not use retreaded tyres, asthese could have adverse effects

on the car's safety. Their carcassesmay differ in internal construction orhave aged sufficiently to cast doubt ontheir durability.<

Age of tyres

A tyre's date of manufacture is shownas part of the inscription on the tyrewall:DOT ... 2501 means for instance thatthe tyre was manufactured in Week 25of the year 2001.

BMW recommends tyre replacementafter not more than 6 years, even iftyres up to 10 years old may still besuitable.

Choosing the correct tyres

Fit only wheels and tyres that havebeen approved by BMW for your

type of vehicle, otherwise the tyres maye.g. make contact with the vehicle bodydue to impermissible tolerances, eventhough they are of an approved size;this could result in a serious accident.BMW is unable to assess the suitabilityof wheels and tyres it has not approvedand cannot therefore guarantee theirsafety.<

BMW has tested certain makes of tyrefor each tyre size, classified them assafe for use and approved them. BMWService is able to provide the details ofthese makes. Observe any nationallegislation e.g. on entries required inthe vehicle documents

The correct wheel and tyre combi-nation has an influence on various

systems, the function of which couldotherwise be adversely affected, forinstance ABS, AGS, ASC+T/DSC.For this reason, fit only tyres of thesame make and tread pattern on all thecar's wheels, and after a puncture, forinstance, fit the approved wheel andtyre combination again as soon aspossible.<

Tyre storage

Store wheels and tyres in a cool, dryand preferably dark place when not inuse. Protect tyres against contamina-tion from oil, grease and fuel.

The correct tyres

BMW recommends you to fit wintertyres (M+S radial-ply) if the car is usedfor driving in wintery conditions.Although tyres sold for all-year use withan M+S marking have better wintercharacteristics than summer tyresmarked with speed letters H, V, W, Y orZR, they do not normally match theperformance of winter tyres.

In the interests of reliable directionalstability and steerability, fit winter tyresof the same make and tread pattern toall four road wheels.

Note the speed limit applicable tothese tyres

In Germany: a sticker stating themaximum permitted speed must bedisplayed in the driver's field of view ifthe car is capable of speeds higherthan that permitted for the tyres. Suit-able labels are available from tyresuppliers or a BMW Service.

Never exceed the maximum speedlaid down for the winter tyres fitted

to your car.Lack of expert knowledge or incorrecthandling of tyres can cause damageand lead to accidents. All work on tyres should therefore becarried out only by experts. BMWService will gladly place its specialisedknowledge and facilities at yourdisposal.<

Tyre condition and tyre pressures

Below a tread depth of 4 mm (0.16 in),winter tyres become noticeably lesssuitable for winter driving conditionsand should therefore be replaced forsafety reasons.

Keep to the specified tyre pressuresand have the wheels and tyres rebal-anced each time the wheels arechanged or new tyres are fitted.

Fine-link BMW snow chains are onlypermitted if fitted to both rear wheels. When fitting, comply with the manufac-turer's instructions. When snow chainsare in use, do not exceed 50 km/h(approx. 30 mph).

If the car has 17 or 18-inchwheels, snow chains cannot be

fitted.<

Specified engine oils

The quality of the engine oil is a deci-sive factor for the correct operation andlong life of your car's engine. BMW hasconducted extensive tests beforeapproving certain grades of engine oil.

Petrol and diesel engines:

The highest quality standards areachieved by oils which BMW hasapproved as "long-life 01" oils.

Use only an approved grade of "long-life 01" oil.

If you are unable to purchase one ofthese oils, you can top up the oil level inbetween oil changes, if only a smallamount of oil is needed, with a BMW-approved "long-life 98" grade of oil.Only if no such oil is available shouldyou top up the engine oil level with anapproved "special oil" or an oil toACEA: A3 specification.

BMW Service can provide detailsof the oils approved by BMW for

your car's engine.<

Diesel engines:

The engine oil chosen must alwayscomply with the ACEA: A3/B3 or ACEA:A3/B4 specification.

Approved "long-life 01" oils alwaysmeet this specification.

Viscosities

All "long-life" oils approved by BMWare suitable for operation at anyambient temperature. You conse-quently do not need to pay specificattention to the viscosity class.

Do not top up the cooling systemwhile the engine is hot, otherwise

you may scald yourself on the resultantcoolant steam. To avoid the risk of subsequentdamage, use only long-life antifreezeand corrosion inhibitor free from nitritesand amino compounds, and approvedby the manufacturer. BMW Service isfamiliar with these products.Antifreeze and corrosion inhibitorconstitutes a health hazard. Store it insealed original packs, out of reach ofchildren.Long-life antifreeze and corrosioninhibitor contains ethylene glycol, whichis flammable. For this reason, take carenot to spill long-life antifreeze andcorrosion inhibitor on hot parts of theengine; it could ignite and causeburns.<

The maintenance routines based onactual use of the car consist of the OilService and Inspections I and II.

The principle of determining mainte-nance intervals according to load effec-tively covers all the operatingconditions to which the car is likely tobe exposed. Drivers who cover onlyvery short annual distances wellbelow 10,000 km (approx. 6,000 miles) should none the less have an engineoil change carried out every two years, since engine oil ages regardless of theloads imposed on it.

In view of the risk of potentiallyfatal accidents resulting from the

high electrical voltages that arepresent, work on the xenon lightingsystem including bulb changing shouldonly be performed by specialistpersonnel.<

Safety precautions in the event ofa puncture or tyre failure:

Halt the car as far away from the maintraffic flow as possible, on a firmsurface; switch on the hazard warningflashers.Engage the steering lock in the straight-ahead position, apply the handbrakeand select first or reverse gear orselector lever position P.All occupants must leave the car and beled to a point where they are notexposed to risk, for example behind acrash barrier at the side of the road.If necessary, set up the warning triangleor a flashing warning light at a sufficientdistance to the rear. Comply with rele-vant local laws.Only change wheels on a flat, firm andnon-slip surface. On a soft or low-gripsurface (snow, ice, tiles or similar) thereis a risk of the car or the jack slidingsideways.

Position the car's jack on a firm surface.Never place wood blocks or similarunder the jack, or the maximum liftingcapacity may be exceeded. When thecar has been jacked up, do not lieunder it or start the engine, as thiscould lead to a potentially fatal acci-dent.<

What you need

To avoid rattling noises later, pleasemake a note of the positions of thetools when they are removed, andreplace them in the same positionslater.

> JackSaloon: fold back the floor mat in theluggage compartment and loosen thewing nut (arrow).touring: raise the floor panel and thespare wheel cover (see page 134).After using the jack, retract it fully, swing the crank handle back in andclip it securely

Procedure

1. Note the safety precautions on theprevious page

2. Prevent the car from rolling away:Place the wheel chock behind thefront wheel on the side opposite towhere the wheel is to be removed (orin front of the front wheel on a down-hill gradient). If the car cannot bemoved to a point on a less severegradient, you must protect it reliablyagainst rolling away

3. If full-width wheel covers* areinstalled: reach into the vent holesand pull the cover off

4. Version with adapter*: place theadapter on the wheel stud cover, attach the wheel stud wrench andpress to the left (see illustration)

Use the jack only for wheel-changing. Do not attempt to raise

another type of vehicle or any otherload with this jack; this could result ininjury or damage. For safety reasons, have the wheel studtightening torque checked withoutdelay, using a suitable calibrated torquewrench (correct tightening torque =100 Nm).<

When replacing a wheel in the sparewheel well, make sure that the centralthreaded rod in the well is not bent ordamaged.

If the car is not fitted with alloy wheelsof the Original BMW type, note thatdifferent wheel studs may be needed.

Have a flat tyre repaired as soon aspossible, and the wheel and tyre rebal-anced before fitting.

Fit dust caps on tyre valves, to keep dirtout. Dirt in the tyre valve can often leadto a gradual loss of air pressure.

For the lightweight wheel, useonly BMW-approved balance

weights for alloy wheels. Do notattempt to use hammer-on steelbalance weights on these wheels.<

With certain tyre sizes, in theevent of a puncture or similar it

may be necessary to fit the spare wheeland tyre (of a different size). Althoughthis wheel can be used entirely satis-factorily in all load and speed ranges, insuch cases, fit a wheel and tyre of thecorrect size as soon as possible.<

Maintenance

The battery needs no routine mainte-nance whatsoever, in other words thequantity of acid it contains will normallylast for the full operating life of thebattery in temperate climates.

Please address all queriesconcerning the battery to BMW

Service. As the battery is absolutelymaintenance-free, the following infor-mation is provided for reference only.<

Do not disconnect battery leadswhile the engine is running, other-

wise excess current will destroy thevehicle electronics unit.<

Recharging the battery

Recharge the battery only with theengine stopped, via the connections inthe engine compartment (see "Startingwith a flat battery", page 173).

Dispose of old batteries only at anauthorised collecting point or

return them to BMW Service. Batteriesfilled with acid should be transportedand stored upright. Protect batteriesagainst falling over when in transit.<

Towing eye

The screw-in towing eye is kept in thecar's toolkit (on the touring, next to thespare wheel) and should always becarried on the car. It can be screwed inat the front or the rear of the car, and isonly to be used for towing on a firmroad surface.

Access to threaded hole

Front:Press the arrow symbol on the coverand swing it out to remove.

390de087

Rear:Press the arrow symbol on the coverand swing it out to remove.

Screw the towing eye in fully toavoid the risk of its thread being

damaged.Never tow the car or lash it down at anyof the suspension elements, as thiscould cause damage and lead to acci-dents occurring later.<

For towing, use either a towbar or anylon rope or tapes; use of the latterhelps to avoid sudden tensile loads.

394de088

Avoid offset between the towingand towed vehicle, and make sure

that the towrope is taut when thetowing vehicle moves off.<

Using a towbar

The towing eyes of both vehiclesshould be on the same side. If it isimpossible to avoid attaching thetowbar at an angle, note the following:

> Towbar clearance may be restrictedwhen cornering

> The towbar will generate lateralforces if it is attached offset.

Do not tow a vehicle heavier thanyour own, as there is otherwise a

risk of losing control.<

Fuel consumption is determined according to a standard test method (93/116/EU). It is not the same as the average fuelconsumption in practice, which depends on a great many different factors such as driving style, load, road condition, trafficdensity and flow, weather, tyre pressures etc. Engine power output and road performance data are measured in the condi-tions laid down by 80/1269 EU and DIN 70020 (with the car to standard specification). This standard specifies the permit-ted tolerances. Additional equipment on the car may have quite a significant influence on both performance and fuel con-sumption, since it usually affects the car's weight andc value (drag coefficient), for instance roof rack, wider tyres, additional mirrors etc.
