December 18 ~ VFMS Christmas Party with RIG-A-JIGBring your dancing shoes, some finger-food to share, and a whole lot of seasonal cheer (non-alcoholic, please!) to the Victoria Folk Music Society’s annual year-end party. RIG-A-JIG will provide the music, guest callers the dancing instructions, and Morris Dancers their outlandishly costumed theatrical entertainment.

RIG-A-JIG sprung from the Morris and Folk Club scene, and has spanned the entire last two decades of the Victoria Folk

Music Society. Known for its upbeat Celtic music, the band regularly plays weddings and dances — especially contradances. RIG-A-JIG’s varied repertoire includes numbers old and new, instrumental and vocal, fast and slow.

The band consists of Molly Raher Newman on percussion, mandolin, and lap dulcimer; Dick Pollard on fiddle; Ian Johnston on guitar; Dave Klassen on bass; Karen Gillmore on flute, whistle, and banjo; and all of the above on vocals.

Denis Donnelly has been presenting Christmas features at The Folk off and on since the late 1980s. His shows gather musicians together to sing and play uncommon folk-tradition music from the turning of the year that he has collected from many traditions, Christian and otherwise.

This year Denis brings his wonderful group Soundings , a 26-voice a cappella ensemble, to our stage. Together they will sing music both traditional and

contemporary that celebrates humanity’s fascination with the dark time of the year. Included will be some traditional carols in guises that you would not expect, contemporary pieces from composers writing new and innovative work, and songs from the repertoires of such diverse groups as the Roches and Pentatonix.

Be prepared to sing along on some choruses as well — you may learn some new pieces to add to your own annual repertoire of must-sing Christmas songs!

December 11 ~ Panel Concert: Peter, Paul & Mary songsCome enjoy an evening celebrating the music of Peter, Paul & Mary, an American folk-singing trio whose nearly 50-year career began in 1961. The trio was composed of Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers, and they were part of the 1960s folk revival. Their debut album included “Lemon Tree”, “500 Miles”, and the Pete Seeger tunes “If I Had a Hammer” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?”. That album was listed in the Billboard Magazine Top Ten for 10 months, including seven weeks at Number 1.

In 1963 the group released “Puff the Magic Dragon”, and performed “If I Had a Hammer” and “Blowin’ in the Wind” at the 1963 March on Washington. They had hits with the Bob Dylan songs “Blowin’ in the Wind”, “The Times They Are a-Changin’”; “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”, and “When the Ship Comes In”. ”Leaving on a Jet Plane”, their only No. 1 single, was the group’s sixth

million-selling gold single and was released on an album with “I Dig Rock and Roll Music”. Their last hit record was 1969’s “Day is Done”. With an amazing catalogue of songs spanning centuries of folk tradition, Peter, Paul & Mary stand as one of folk music’s greatest success stories.

Joining us for this concert are some of Victoria’s finest vocal groups including

The Carolina Bluebirds; Without A Net; Little Crow; Ozmoses; The Rabbleberries; The Elies van Sommeren Trio; Gordon, Andre, & Patty; and many more folk club favourites. Hosted by André Clouthier, it will be a night of harmony and favourite sing-along choruses. Please note that there will be no open stage to accommodate a full evening of musical reminiscing.

VFMS Open-Stage GuidelinesNew VFMS Constitution and BylawsWhy a new Constitution and Bylaws?Due to the BC Government’s introduction of the new Societies Act, which comes into effect November, 28, 2016, all registered Societies are required to transition to conform to the new legislation.

This transition requires some mandatory changes to the original VFMS Constitution and Bylaws. Since the Constitution and Bylaws needed to be modified anyway, the Society has chosen to take this opportunity to update and clarify them to better reflect the Society’s operations today. We have made these changes with the aid of one of our VFMS members, Lynn Beak, who has helped several other local Societies transition to conform to the new legislation.

What must be done to adopt the new Constitution and Bylaws?To be adopted, the new Constitution and Bylaws must be approved by 75% of a quorum of members in attendance at a General meeting of the Society.

When will the General meeting be held to adopt the new Constitution and Bylaws?The adoption of the new Constitution and Bylaws will be considered at the upcoming VFMS Annual General Meeting which will be held at 4:30 PM on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at Norway House.

What changes have been made in the Constitution and Bylaws?We have strived to make as few changes to the intent of the original Constitution and Bylaws as possible while making the changes required to conform to the new legislation and incorporate the clarifications thought necessary to more accurately reflect how the society operates today.

To assist you in reviewing the changes that have been made copies of the original (1986) and the revised (2016) versions of the Constitution and Bylaws as well as a Summary of Changes can be reviewed in hard copy at the Folk on Sunday nights prior to the AGM or viewed on the VFMS website anytime at: victoriafolkmusic.ca/vfms_business.html
