E UILIBRIO

Equilibrio is our first exhibition for 2016, and in a way, it brings us full circle to when we initially started Artemis Art. Our very first exhibition back in May 2012 too was one dedicated to women artists, albeit on a much smaller scale with three artists.

Perhaps there is an element of chance that this has come to be. Truth be told, we have wanted to do an exhibition in conjunction with International Women’s Day for some time now. This year, the opportunity to do so presented itself.

Putting together an exhibition tying in to International Women’s Day inevitably raises the question of direction and theme. There were many pertinent issues and questions we could have focused the exhibition on, but instead we decided the focus should be on an important element necessary for the many aspirations and goals women want to achieve.

The exhibition is about balance, something we feel is an important ingredient in life generally, and certainly true for the life of women in particular. As a simple example, striking a balance between home and personal life, with that of a career. Plus, balancing the many other expectations society has for women on top of that.

With this exhibition, we have endeavored to once again challenge ourselves, something we continuously do. Bring-ing together twenty-two artists with a wide range of styles and experience levels, yet maintaining a semblance of cohesiveness has been no trivial feat. In this respect, too, it has been about finding just the right balance of content to feature.

At Artemis Art, we have strived to make positive contributions towards a more vibrant and exciting visual art com-munity by providing a platform for young and emerging artists, formally trained or self-taught. A platform for young artists doesn’t necessarily mean, however, that a given group exhibition only has the participation of young artists.

In fact, what we have in Equilibrio is a mix of young and established artists, providing the younger artists a better exposure platform, their works side by side with those from their more established contemporaries, local and from abroad. It’s another dimension to balance, a visual exposition of young and established, and a balance between the neophyte and the more experienced.

It is our earnest hope that through this exhibition, new friendships among the participating artists are made, across borders or even within, new experiences gained, all contributing towards further advancement of all their careers.

Andrialis Abdul Rahmanb. 1983 in Malaysia

Andrialis is currently a lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in the Department of Photomedia Creative, teaching various aspects of photography, including experimental art photography, an area that is of particular interest to her.

She believes the right picture can transmit emotions, messages and evoke feelings. She dreams of living in a rectangular frame and sharing it with the world.

Ayu Arista Murtib. 1979 in Surabaya, Indonesia

An accomplished emerging artist, Ayu Arista Murti is a graduate from the prestigious Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Her works have been exhibited internationally, the most recent at Art Stage 2016 in Singapore.

Water, a fundamental element in life, features prominently in Ayu’s works. Surrounding her physicality, water can be found in abundance; the river nearby where she lives, which eventually connects to the sea surrounding the island of Java, on which she resides. Much of her work process that goes into her art, too, involves the use of water.

For Ayu, water is the bridge that connects the many elements in her life, linking the subconscious with the real world around her.

Eddie Choo b. 1988 in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Currently living and studying in Taipei, Taiwan, Eddie’s field interest are the relationship between body and things surrounding her in her daily routine. She assumes that every objects has a memory behind our daily routine. In 2010, she was involved in Pudu Community Art Project.

In 2013, she was artist-in-residence at Lostgens Art Space in Kuala Lumpur, where her first solo exhibition was held that year. Last year, she received the “Outstanding Art Prize of School of Fine Arts” awarded by Taipei National University of Arts, and also exhibited her artworks at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts (Taipei) in the group exhibition entitled “This is not a poisoned apple”.

She obtained her Diploma in Fine Art from Dasein Academy of Art in Kuala Lumpur, and is currently studying at the Taipei National University of Arts, pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Art.

Elena Kravchenko b. 1984 in Novorossiysk, Russia

Before delving into visual art, Elena spent several years working in the advertising industry in Russia. She adores myths, stories from childhood, fairy tales, fantasies, legends, North-East European folk literature as well as drawing together with little kids, which is where she finds her inspiration for her works.

In 2015, she was part of the Sembilan Art Residency program, culminating in a two-artist exhibition entitled “Unborn x Reborn”, with Malaysian artist Aleff Ahmad.

Elena resided in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and worked as independent artist and commercial illustrator, before leaving back for Russia earlier this year.

ERYN (Winnie Cheng) uses a combination of pen and ink drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting, and papercutting techniques to create meticulously detailed compositions filled with strange creatures in an otherworldly setting. Her art deals primarily with themes of introversion and self-discovery, reflecting on the experiences and interactions she has in her daily life.

ERYN employs storytelling as a way to externalize what is intrinsically an internal process, inspired by narratives from classical and contemporary sources. These can be in the form of literature or the way a story unfolds in a video game, or even a story told through song, movie and animation. Myths and legends from around the world to stories in the gothic horror, science fiction and fantasy genres are absorbed and turned into new narratives that relate to the artist’s experience on a personal level. These narratives are enacted by imaginary creatures, and sometimes human forms, in surreal landscapes and spaces. The use of imaginary beings helps to convey abstract concepts such as logic, anger, confusion, clarity, love and belief. For example the ‘Tree of Life’ theme makes use of the imagery of a tree in a vessel to represent a healthy thought process from the growth of the tree to its flowering branches. It alludes to how our thoughts operate and how each train of thought originates from a seed that we planted in our mind.

Growing up in Brunei has imparted ERYN with a deep appreciation of the natural world. The themes of introversion play out in imaginary landscapes inspired by lush tropical rainforests, the frozen arctic plains, and even the dry unforgiving desert. Each landscape is shaped by thoughts and emotions in ERYN’s mind and the process is at once aware yet unconscious. These landscapes are also removed from the mundane laws of physics, gravity, and proportion. Through this the artist creates a dreamlike quality in order to bring the viewer into an inner space to experience both the mysterious and the extraordinary.

Huong Nguyen Thu b. 1979 in Hanoi, Vietnam

Silk painting is an area of specialty of this well-known artist from Vietnam. Last year, she was one of the participating artists in Destination IV – Sprouting, a group exhibition by women artists from Malaysia and Vietnam, hosted by the Malaysian Embassy in Hanoi.

Huong obtained both her Bachelor and Masters in Fine Art degrees from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, in Hanoi, Vietnam, and has actively been participating in exhibitions since 2005. She is a member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, as well as the Young Artist Club.

Jaël Estrella b. 1983 in Reims, France

Jaël Estrella is a French born self-taught artist who has been based in Kuala Lumpur since 2011.

Art is as essential as breathing for Jaël. Since a young age, she has been observing the surrounding world through an artistic eye. Her main inspiration is the beauty of textures, colors, patterns found in Nature, for her the Greatest Artist of all.

She expresses herself using different mediums such as marker pen, acrylic paint and collage. The collage works are important to her because she uses recycled magazine paper. She gives a second and permanent life to the paper by producing meticulous, harmonious and powerful images from magazines that were about to be thrown away.

Most of her works are abstract, with strong colors and textures, and a sharp sense of details.

Jasmine Kok b. 1970 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

A native of Kuala Lumpur, Jasmine had always been attracted to art from young, drawing and painting during her school years. Jasmine participated in the 2nd ASEAN Exhibition of Children’s Art in 1984, her first participation in a major art event, at the young age of 14. Jasmine enrolled in the now defunct KL College of Art, and in 1993 obtained her Diploma in Fine Art, majoring in Painting.

She enrolled herself in the City & Guilds of London Art School in 1996, and sculpture presented itself as a way she could continue creating with her hands, rather than delve into the more conceptual side of visual art. Although sculpture is her main mode of artistic expression, Jasmine is also adept at painting and printmaking, making her an all-round artist.

Jasmine has a larger long-term mission, to realize a dream that she has had for the last several years, which is to set up a sculpture park, inspired by what she saw while studying in the UK, in particular, Henry Moore’s sculpture park in Perry Green, Herfordshire and the Grizedale Forest Art Park, located in England’s Lake District.

Karma Sirikogar’s intricate works are created with a loving and compulsive attention to detail. Her imaginative compositions are suggestively inspired by geometric man-made structures and organic forms found in the natural world. Viewers are hypnotized by her works ambiguous yet familiar imagery, that draw gentle associations between the microcosmic constructions of biology, flora, landscapes, mechanics, circuitry and the anatomy of architecture. The abstracted becomes surreal and vice versa. Through repetitive patterns, optical dense line work and meandering shapes, viewers are drawn into an ocular meditation, releasing the mind of cognitive thought - allowing oneself to mentally float into the exploration of the unknown. Karma’s process is automatic and sub-conscious driven. Her work is constantly evolving as she grows and develops her skills.

Describing herself as a third culture nomad, Karma was born in Singapore and is of Punjabi descent, but is now a citizen of Thailand, living and working in Bangkok.

Through imagination and observation, Koo Yean Ni’s art delves into the cultural diversity and intricacies of Malaysia’s rich and diverse cultures. Inspired by the innocence and naivety of children’s creativity, events are depicted using forms and lines, as seen from the artist’s own perspective. Embracing the many cultural and historical aspects of Malaysiana, each of her works are an investigation into our past and present, using motifs taken from major folk arts from the various cultural groupings in Malaysia.

Yean Ni complements her artistic career by teaching art to young children, whose spontaneity and honest expressiveness continue to be an inspiration for her works.

Laksmi has been an active artist since early in her youth, participating in several national and international exhibitions since the age of 13, well before she enrolled in the prestigious Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) in her hometown of Yogyakarta.

She is today perhaps best known for her sculptures, and also for her paintings, one of which is part of Equilibrio. Laksmi Shitaresmi has, to-date, over two hundred group exhibitions and ten solo exhibitions so far in her career that spans almost three decades.

Lhean Villanueva b. 1985 in Manila, The Philippines

Lhean is a Manila based visual artist whose works transcend the conventional, depicting instead the beauty of the mythical and extraterrestrial. The flair of her work is contemporary in nature; Lhean has endeavored to develop her own psychedelic style using vibrant and neon colors distinctly outlined with black flowing intricate lines and patterns. She doesn’t limit herself to this perimeter, however, she know no inhibitions which allowed her to continuously explore different combinations of drawing and painting medium that interest her.

Ethereal elements which are present in her art form communicates her current thoughts and social expressions, strong feminine visual undertones representative of her strong character as an artist. Also present in her works are visual expressions of the underground Psytrance-music culture, a sub-culture milieu Lhean is both an enthusiast and advocate for within her community.

The psychedelic vibes that emanate through her works are visual expressions of the music that drives her, producing art that is unique as the artist herself is.

Lyia Meta b. 1971 in Malacca, Malaysia

She’s a vibrant singer, sometimes songwriter, and visual artist who spent her early childhood admiring her father’s paintbrush fly across huge expanses of canvas. Each stroke left her in awe and wonder at the magic he wove.

Lyia was born in Malacca, to a Malaccan Portuguese father and a Sinhalese-Chinese mother. From as far back as she can remember, she has been doodling, sketching and painting. After school she pursued distance studies in Interior Design, got married, had a kid and fell in love with the stage. Making music her life, she has sung in various parts of the peninsula. But art has always been close to her heart.

Today she is still singing but her art has become more and more a channel for which she can best express herself. Moving away from the more ornate and romantic style many have known her art to be, Lyia’s more recent works sees her delve into a more abstract style of painting, depicting scenes of almost post-apocalyptic solace.

Manje (Shany Ahmed) b. 1983 in Maldives

Manje is today a freelance visual artist and conceptual designer, but the route she took can certainly be said to have been an unconventional one. Her formal education may have been in Urban Planning, but since completing her studies Manje has been active in the creative industry, working as a designer, photographer and visual artist.

A self-taught artist, her artworks are a reflection of the rich cultural backdrop of Maldives, her home country, borrowing many visual thematic ideas from folkloric and cultural elements of the island nation. Ornately decorative on the surface, each of her works tells a deeper story, often utilizing Maldivian folklore as a basis to address more contemporary issues and themes.

Currently, Manje is an active member of Studio Mekar, a young artist collective studio just outside of Kuala Lumpur, where most of her art is created. She is also an active mural painter, participating in numerous graffiti and mural events around KL.

A recent graduate from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Ony draws her inspiration from the many places she has traveled to. Not only is she attracted by the beautiful scenery, but her fascination extends to the people she meets as well.

Among the places she has traveled to is Nepal, source of inspiration for her more recent works. She is cognizant of the fact what makes a place special is not just the physicality of the place, but the people who inhabit it. Sudrak Khongpuang b. 1975 in Thailand

Sudrak Khongpuang started her career as a professional painter from 2002. A prolific practitioner of the Naïve Surrealism movement, Sudrak is known for the use of vibrant colors to document the Thai countryside and the old rural way of life. Her oil colour on canvas Modern Landscape paintings, inspired by her carefree childhood years spent with her grandparents upcountry, are a clear testament of her unique style.

A self-taught painter, Sudrak spent the first half of her professional career perfecting her techniques and discovering her distinctive style. From that moment on, her works have made their ways to public viewing – both as a part of group exhibitions and independently. Amongst her many solo showcases, the most notable are exhibitions held at South Bay Contemporary/The Loft Art Studio & Gallery in San Pedro, California USA, the National Gallery of Thailand, the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre, and the Jamjuree Art Gallery of the Chulalongkorn University, to name just a few. Her paintings are celebrated by both domestic and foreign art collectors.

Tiarma Siraitb. 1968 in Bandung, Indonesia

Tiarma Sirait is an exciting Bandung-based fashion artist who presents visually provocative and thought provoking installations, performances, textiles and fashions, questioning all the conventional wisdoms both of the East and West.

She began to study painting from the senior artist Barli Sasmitawinata when she was in Junior High School. Tiarma was educated in the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in Textile Design, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Fashion Design and a STINT (The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research & Higher Education) scholarship Program, Master in Fashion & Textile Design at University of Borås, Sweden. In 1997, she started her own Private studio for fashion and Design; ‘Poleng Studio’.

Her performance in design and fashion has been acknowledged by many international art institutions and she has intensively participated in many domestics and overseas exhibitions. Recently, she began painting again and has participated in many exhibitions, including at the Indonesia National Gallery in Jakarta (Galeri Nasional).

The fabulous artworks of “2008 Won’t Ever Be” was chosen for the permanent collection of the Olympic Fine Arts Museum, China.

As a fashion artist, her aim is to support diversity in Indonesian fashion through active participation in the local and international fashion scenes. Tiarma is passionate about developing the creativity of young Indonesian designers through workshops and internship programs and events. She sees her key role in the facilitation of fashion at Poleng Studio as a medium of expression and communication through various exhibitions, lectures, writing, performances and forums.

Recently, she has incorporated pink plastics and synthetic fur to highlight the fickleness, volatility and falsehood that permeate our dearly held beliefs, influences and lifestyles. Through her bold conceptual approaches to art, fashion design and pop culture, Tiarma has explored themes such as love and lust, foreign influences on Indonesian culture and mass consumerism to name but a few.

Her art is intended to show the hyper reality in the contemporary context. She uses fashion in her painting as a medium to express the journey of her performances. She shows her exploration of her free spirit in her painting. Her artwork uses pink as the main color. She uses this color to give an eccentric sensation for her creation. She uses pink also because the color is very girly, kitsch, and synthetic. She has worked quite consistently with pink since the beginning of her career as a fashion artist in 1998. It has been her signature to use this brilliant color in her artwork.

Tiarma has exhibited extensively throughout Indonesia and in countries around the world such as: Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, France, Germany, Canada, Cuba, Poland, Japan, UK, Sweden, Italy, China, Colombia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Portugal, and others. She is also frequently invited to deliver talks, guest lecture, and to participate in many international events and symposia related to art, design and fashion.

Veronika Neukirchb. 1986 in Düsseldorf, Germany

Veronika is a multi-disciplinary visual artist who has been living and working in Malaysia since 2014. She obtained her BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, and is active as an independent curator, researcher and writer, in addition to being a visual artist.

She aims to unveil the amusing, mystical or alien within the mundane, giving new identities and perspectives to familiar everyday objects.

Viko Zhijuneb. 1993 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Viko, a young artist who recently obtained her diploma in Fine Art from Dasein Academy of Art, uses her works to explore her inner world, shuttling between sense and sensibility, using dots, lines, shapes and colours. The process of creating enables her to learn more about herself, both as a method of self-discovery and the practice of self-healing.

Her works do not delve too deeply into narrative, instead allowing the viewer to provide their own interpretation. Various forms of visual arts are utilized by her in the process of revealing her inner world.

Eqilibrio is Viko’s second exhibition participation, after the most recent Locals Only exhibition at Taksu Kuala Lumpur. She was the second prize winner in the 2014 Tanjung Heritage National Art Competition, in the Oil & Acrylic category.

Vivi Kartina Hazoleneb. 1979 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia

After staying out of the art scene for a few years, Vivi Kartina Hazolene returned to painting through her participation in Cracko Art Group’s Guilty Pleasures last year, hosted by Artemis Art. She is, in fact, one of the founding members of the Kota Kinabalu based artist collective.

As a full-time mother of three, Vivi knows firsthand the difficulty in trying to find a viable middle path, balancing the needs of her young family, with her artistic pursuits.

Vu Bach Lienb. 1976 in Hanoi, Vietnam

Adept at the intricacies of printmaking Vu Bach Lien’s intricate woodcut and lithographic prints exhibit the attention to detail that this artist possesses. She has won several awards for her artworks, which have since been collected by the Vietnam Fine Art Museum, as well as by collectors from several countries around the world.

Her large format woodcuts depict the visual emotions the artist observes with the passage of time, and are part of her ongoing Four Seasons series of woodcut prints.

Bach Lien currently resides in Hanoi, and is a member of the Vietnam Fine Art Association, based in the Vietnamese capital city.

Yasmeen Cheongb. 1994 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Visualization of human expressions is the main thrust of Yasmeen’s current work, delving into the dynamics of human interaction and how facial expressions become the interface through which individuals interact with each other.

Her subjects are frequently the elderly, portraitures reflecting the circumstances of their existence, often focusing on those neglected by family and society, living out the remainder of their lives in institutions. The strong monochromatic tonal textures, achieved through her use of charcoal and oil, drive us to contemplate the circumstances of her subjects, perhaps even to move us to become more caring as individuals.

In her young career, this recent graduate from Dasein Academy of Art has already garnered awards, but more importantly, the attention of art enthusiasts.

This catalog is published in conjunction with EQUILIBRIO, a group exhibition by 22 women artists from nine countries, to coincide with International Women’s Day 2016. Artemis Art would like to thank all the participating artists for their contribution to this exhibition, which we intend to be the first in a series of annual exhibitions celebrating the role of women in the world of visual art.
