Entrance to the Liturgy - optional preparation

Adopt a comfortable posture. A good posture for most people is to sit upright. Place both feet flat on the floor, slightly apart. Rest your hands on your thighs. Sit upright, do not lounge; you will find that you can nevertheless get quite comfortable and relaxed in this posture.

Close your eyes. Breath in slowly and deeply. Hold your breath for a few seconds - note this, a few seconds, this is not a competition to see how long you can hold your breath - then breath out slowly. Repeat this deep breath twice more. This symbolically and in fact will help to clear your lungs and your body of everyday toxins. After that, continue to breathe normally and steadily. Be aware of your breathing, feel its rhythm. You may continue in cycles of three breaths, each relating to the Holy Trinity.

Breath 1

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, it was the breath of God that called forth the Creation into being. Be aware that the same creative breath of God surrounds you. When you breathe in and out, you become united with God the Creator. In that exchange, you are filled with the creative power of God.

Breath 2

On the cross, Jesus breathed out as a sign of completion. Be aware that the breath of Christ surrounds you to fill you with healing and restoration. In your breathing you become united with Christ. In that exchange, you are filled with the healing power of God.

Breath 3

On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples as a mighty wind to empower them for the task ahead. Be aware of the breath of the Holy Spirit surrounding you to fill you with power. In your breathing, you become united with the Holy Spirit. In that exchange, you are empowered to fulfil the work of God.

Be aware of your breathing, feel its rhythm. Be aware of the Holy Trinity surrounding you and the continual exchange of breathing in and out, which creates, restores and empowers.

Now, your body through breathing, your mind through your thoughts about the Holy Trinity, and your spirit through the on going exchange is ready to participate fully in the Liturgy, the work of the Whole People of God.

If you have arrived early and been through few cycles of breathing, you could slowly and steadily recite the Lord’s Prayer.

Welcome to this Celebration of Holy Communion based on the Scottish Liturgy and shaped by

prayer, meditation, silence and reflective music from the Taizé Community. We enter this

celebration through the Stations of the Cross.

The central element of this worship is the Celebration of the Hospitality of Christ. You are invited

to receive Communion as part of this Eucharistic hospitality. Please come forward for a blessing of

healing and renewal, if you prefer.
