Reframe Wānanga~ A brand new youth mental health and wellbeing initiative ~
What if young people….
What if mental health
staff…
What if support…
Could learn practical things to support
mental health and wellbeing without
having to get a diagnosis or
referral…?
Could work creatively with young
people in a way that minimized
power-imbalances, centered around
their own passions and valued any
peer experience they had …?
Could be centered around learning and
growth, recognized young people’s abilities,
and modelled that people get through hard
stuff and go on to thrive….?
Amazing Co-production Team!
Recovery college models
Position people as “learners” rather than “service users”
Equally value peer and professional expertise
Are completely voluntary to engage in
Easy to access, self-referral
Have made a huge impact for people’s wellbeing and confidence in education
Knowing the impact……

programmes
Young people are clients, service

Young people are learners, students or
participants
Service users have mental health
issues or diagnoses and are within set
age range
Courses are tailored to be run with
groups across a wellbeing spectrum -
13ish to 24ish
Young people are referred to services
by professionals
Young people (and Whānau) choose to
enroll in courses
Work undertaken is largely individual
and therapeutic
Courses are educational and aim to
empower groups
Maintained engagement is often
necessary to be active client and
receive support
Students can come and go, choosing
when they take courses that appeal to
them
Staff are clinicians, e.g. medicine,
nursing and allied health
Each course is co-facilitated by experts
of professional and personal experience
Services based on models of care
designed by clinicians or directed by
policy
All courses are co-designed by young
people with lived experience and

Courses we could develop….
Pilot programme at Ao Tawhiti
Ten students aged 13-17 helped us run and reflect on our first course: a four week optional programme
focused on wellbeing, overwhelming emotions, distress tolerance, strengths, and supporting our friends
and whanau.
Here’s what they said about the course:
“I especially liked the physicality of it… The range of activities and discussions”
“People experience life differently and that is okay”
“You don’t have to shoulder everything”
Supporting participants…
Developing a peer coach role…

What we hope to offer the sector
Courses and workshops you can suggest to young people you work with that will support their wellbeing and recovery
Options for young people who don’t meet access criteria for Specialist Mental Health Services to learn about supporting their own wellbeing (and friends/family)
Options for young people who are in the Specialist Mental Health system to see their experiences from another angle, engage with peers who have their own recovery journey, find hope
