E-Stop rebate program

Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial and Integrity Machining, Inc. Partner on Emergency Stop Rebate Program Seattle Fishermen's Memorial and Integrity Machining, INC are happy to announce a Safety Rebate Program to assist some qualifying fishing vessels in the installation of a Capstan Winch Emergency Stop (E-Stop). Commercial fishing is one of the nation’s deadliest occupations and deck injuries are the leading cause of hospitalized traumatic injury among commercial fishermen. 32% of those injuries are due to being entangled in machinery or struck by an object. In 2002, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) identified the hydraulic capstan winch on purse seine vessels as the most dangerous piece of deck gear used by fishermen. This program will rebate the cost of an E-Stop retrofit kit from Kolstrand for qualified Seattle-based purse seine vessels. The first rebate will be awarded to a vessel participating in the Fishermen's Safety Fair at Fishermen's Terminal on Friday, May 20th. Subsequent awards will be granted throughout 2016 to vessels that have completed the application process and submitted their application to the Seattle Fishermen's Memorial Board. Currently the plan is to draw vessel names from the rebate applications at the Fall Fishermen's Festival on September 24th, 2016 and at Pacific Marine Expo on November 19th 2016. The Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial Board hopes to provide at least half a dozen rebates through 2016. Winch entanglements involving capstan winches often result in career-ending injuries including multiple fractures to extremities, amputations of fingers and limbs, spinal injuries, head trauma, and death from crushing or blood loss. In interviews with winch accident survivors, they describe the winch as “the most powerful thing” on the vessel and report long-lasting effects from injuries including paraplegia, nerve pain, and limited mobility. This technology has the potential to prevent injuries and fatalities in our commercial fishing fleet and Seattle Fishermen's Memorial is hoping that by offering this rebate more vessel owners will install E-Stops on their winches and the value of these devices will become better known in the industry. Applications will be available at the Fishermen's Safety Fair on May 20th and will be posted on the Seattle Fishermen's Memorial website as soon as possible.
