  • Japan Trade IsSkyrocketing

A recently released analysis o[ tradebetween Texas and Japan by the Jap-anese Consul General in Houston indi-cates both imports and exports in Texasare increasing at a faster tempo thanthat of Ihc {:.S. average.

Consul General Arao Ohta. in releas-ing thc analysis hascd upon figures fromthe | nitcd States-Japan Trade Council, points out that the balance of trade in1968 favored Ihe 17nited States only inthe states of Texas, Washington, Oregonand Louisiana. However. even in thesestates the balance of trade is graduallynarrowing.

The maj,r reasons for the conslfiCUOUSgrowth of imports from Japan to theI/.S. is iron and steel, and machinery--especially automobiles and lelecommuni-cations equipment.

Ohta said the Japanese imports intoTexas--and other areas---arc becomingmore diversified and sophisticated. Ofthe 8155.8 million imported from Japanto Texas in 195& $143.2 million or 92per cent was through the Port of Hous-Ion. The remaining :1.5 per cent camethrough the Port of Galveston. Exportsto Japan through the Port of Houstonwas some $269.1 million by contrast.

Thc consul general pointed out that

the import-export figures for Houston, while less than that handled bv the I_-.S.West Coast ports, were nevertimless im-portant. He also pointed out that thetigurcs, taken basically from Houston’sCustom District, do not show that theSouth’s largest city is pla)ing a vilal role

All the items were a small portion ofunclaimed, seized or abandoned mer-chandise from the Ports of Houston, Gal-veston, Corpus Christi, Beaumont, PortArthur, Dallas, Fort Worth and Okla-homa City--worth an estimated $116,-000 and auctioned off in November byU.S. Customs in some 430 lots.

The two-day sale netted the FederalGovernment something in excess of$27,000, which meant that quite a fewbargains were garnered by some of theestimated 1200 people who attended theauction at Crown Warehouse, just offthe Gulf Freeway.

The "antique flintlock," several vet-eran travelers of Africa pointed out, wasreally a rusty musket similar to thosestill used by eamel drivers today. Never-theless, it went for $78.

The "surprise" packages were pur-posefully unopened goods to lend an airof excitement and tension to the auctionproceedings. In years past some of these"surprises" have yielded items worthfonr or five figures. Needless to say, buyers of these items seldom make pub-lic what their biddings have gained them--good or had.

The thieves paid their visit to thevoluminous warehouse during the night, making off with rings and watches worth$800 from a showcase after smashinga window for their entry and exit.

Even the auctioneers didn’t know whatsome of the items placed on the blockwere, but mostly the merchandise wentquickly to people who seemed to knowexactly what they were bidding on.

The annual auction is open to the gen-eral public and conlmercial interestsalike and is announced each year in localnewspapers, radio and television. Incharge of the sale is Harry G. Kelly,Houston district director of U.S. Cus-tOnlS.
