Buzz Perry had a vision. A pretty stub-born vision that became Equipment Mart.

It certainly wasn't easy for Perry, whofounded the paper with his wife Dianneback in 1993. Growing from truly humblebeginnings, Equipment Mart has evolvedover 20 years after getting its start from thePerry's home in SouthernOregon.

Now semi-retired and liv-ing on the Oregon coast (younever really retire when yourname is Buzz), he had to over-come more than his share ofskeptics to get the papergoing and growing.

"People thought I wascrazy. Even where we hadthem printed, they tried to dis-courage me."

Like any good entrepre-neur, Buzz created a productthat filled a void. He ownedused construction equipmentand wanted to sell it but could-n't get anyone to travel a fewmiles off the beaten path totake some photos and list it intheir magazine. After severalmissed appointments – andthen a promise to come only ifhe paid a mileage charge –Equipment Mart was born.

"I just thought, 'Hey, what abusiness.' They have no serv-ice at all and didn't seem tocare about anybody. The way these peoplewere operating, they needed some compe-tition."

The fact that neither he nor Dianne hadany publishing experience did little to deterthem. And for anyone who knows BuzzPerry, he doesn't let minor details slow himdown.

"We didn't really have a clue. We in-vested all the money we were going to startbuilding a house with. Then I wound up sell-ing all my motorcycles, the motor home andother stuff. I saw all this money going awayand was starting to get nervous. Then itstarted to turn around."

The early issues of the paper consisted

mostly of Buzz's equipment. With customerservice paramount, things started to hap-pen. And some loyal advertisers whostarted with the paper in the early daysfound that it worked and weren't afraid to tellothers about what they had in EquipmentMart.

"A lot of those guys were in from the firstor second issue and have been in thereever since," said Buzz, who sold the paper

to Dave and Heidi Ehrhardt in 2003. "Wewent way out of our way giving service. Ifsomeone called me and wanted to adver-tise, I went out and did it. I didn't charge 'emfor going out there. And they started tellingtheir friends and I got other ads. The papersold itself, it really did. The people that ad-vertised in it helped a lot."

Buzz wasn't afraid to take a chance onpeople. If he saw a piece of equipment forsale on the side of the road, he'd take aphoto and gather as much information ashe could. That night he'd call the seller anddo his best to convince him to run theequipment in the paper. And he'd do it on apromise to pay.

"I'd probably get eight out of 10 of those.We'd just ask them to pay before the nextissue. People would always send us acheck."

Over the years, ads both small and largehave amounted into millions of dollars ofsales for advertisers. The equipment (bothnew and used) has run the gamut of theconstruction and logging industries asEquipment Mart has become a source for

buyers to move theirwares.The emergence and

steady growth of Equip-ment Mart led others totry and launch similarproducts. But theyweren't able to matchthe customer serviceand also tried to forcecontracts on regular ad-vertisers."People didn't like

being pushed into a con-tract," Perry said. "I don'tlike contracts and I was-n't going to force anyoneto sign one."Now, 20 years later,

the same holds true forEquipment Mart. TheEhrhardts and staff takephotos for customersand have never forcedadvertisers into con-tracts."We have a great and

loyal business base,"Dave Ehrhardt said. "We

work to treat them the way we'd like to betreated. And we work to get them results."

Sounds a lot like Buzz Perry's credo."People couldn't believe I was going to

run this paper and wasn't going to havethem sign a one-year contract.” Perry said.“If what we do doesn't work for you, you justneed to discontinue the service."

With over 15,000 copies in print twiceeach month and available at nearly 700 lo-cations in the western states plus a growingwebsite (www.equipmentmartads.com),Equipment Mart has proven its stayingpower in the past two decades. Not bad fora guy with a good bit of stubborn in him whohad a vision.
