City renews leases on old masts. From page 1.

“ There is no current conclusive evi-dence that there are no adverse affectson health,” Sieraha said.

The City has agreed to renew five-year land leases with Cell C, MTN, Vo-dacom and Sentech for their cellularand radio masts in Durbanville (adja-cent to the power substation on Fair-trees Road in Amanda Glen and at theGlenGarry reservoir off BrackenfellBoulevard), Bellville (at the Welge-dacht reservoir in Viola Street), KuilsRiver (at the reservoir off ChurchStreet), as well as in Mamre and Gal-lows Hill.

The City also approved new applica-tions for cellular and radio masts re-spectively at the Western ProvinceMotor Club (off Potsdam Road) and onthe clubhouse of the Atlantic BeachGolf Club.

These decisions were still taken un-der the City’s policy on cellular tele-communication infrastructure, which dates back to May 2002.

However, the revised policy may comeinto place as soon as its has been approvedfollowing the public participation proc-esss, which ends at end of August.

Lungiswa James, mayoral committeemember for health, said in a media release

by the City that “although research intothe potential health hazards of telecommu-nication infrastructure is ongoing, theCity is proposing added measures such asinstructing all applicants to supply addi-tional information on radiation levels

should any telecommunication in-frastructure be placed within 50 me-tres of habitable structures.”

“The rapid development of tech-nology has obliged the City to look ata much wider field than just cellularcommunication.

“The draft policy aims to facilitatethe expansionofnewandexisting tel-ecommunications systems in the citywithout negatively affecting thehealth of the surrounding communi-ty,” she said.

Selfoonmaste kry teenkantingMARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Hierdie aanbevelings is meestal ouer astien jaar.
