9. Jonathan Daniels Play Jonathan Daniels story was staged as play at

Virginia Military Institute (VMI), by Steve Gilbert

It’s as if Marianne Weber was destined to write

about Jonathan Daniels. She was expecting a child in

1965 when Daniels, a 26-year-old Episcopal

seminarian from Keene, was shot to death while

shielding a teenager from the shotgun blast fired by

an off-duty, part-time sheriff’s special deputy in

Hayneville, Ala.

“It was just so shocking and horrifying to some of

us that this young ministry student was killed in

Hayneville and a Catholic priest was wounded,”

Weber said from her home in Prattville, Ala.

“It stayed in my heart. I was thinking of this

mother in New Hampshire who had lost a child. Here

I was expecting the greatest gift a mother could

have.”

Now she’s a playwright and Daniels is the subject.

Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., where

Daniels graduated in 1961 as its valedictorian, staged

a play written by Weber. Titled “Jonathan Myrick

Daniels: The Martyr of Lowndes County,” the one-

act, 45-minute production had a cast of nine and

focused on Daniels’ years at VMI.

VMI presented its annual Jonathan M. Daniels

Humanitarian Award to U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga.

Lewis was dubbed one of the Big Six leaders of the

1960s civil rights movement and a keynote speaker

in the 1963 March on Washington. The award,

established in 1997, emphasizes the virtue of

humanitarian public service and recognizes

individuals who have made significant personal

sacrifices.

Many of Daniels’ former classmates attended, and

Bland says the play was performed as part of the

ceremony. She says because it’s a small cast and has

a sparse set, the play can easily be staged almost

anywhere.

Daniels was killed Aug. 20, 1965, as he tried to

enter a store with three other civil rights workers to

buy a soda. Tom Coleman, an off-duty special deputy

sheriff, confronted them and aimed his shotgun at

Ruby Sales, a 17-year-old black teenager.

Daniels shielded her body and took the blast as

Coleman pulled the trigger. Coleman then shot and

seriously wounded Rev. Richard Morrisroe, a

Catholic priest with the group. Coleman was

acquitted in the death of Daniels by an all-white jury,

a common outcome in those times.

Weber, who attended the play, says she has

always been moved by Daniels’ heroism and the

injustice surrounding his death. She occasionally

thought about Daniels through the years, particularly

when he was designated a martyr by the Episcopal

Church in 1991. She says her interest piqued about

three years ago and she intently researched his life.

“I read every word written that could possibly be

written about him, I talked to Ruby Sales, went to

VMI to look through its archives, talked to people

who knew him, just to sort of get a feel for

Jonathan,” Weber said.
