CONSULTATIVE MEETING ON EXPERIMENTAL WHEAT CULTIVATION

Growing concern over the food security issue in Mauritius has led the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science, Research and Technology, with the collaboration of the Mauritius Research Council, to undertake a feasibility project on wheat cultivation in Mauritius from May 2012 to December 2012. The results have been promising – an average yield of 4 t/ha of wheat grains were obtained with all six varieties under study. The wheat crop reached maturity 90 days after planting. Most varieties had high protein content and a high gluten index.

The next step of this project is to go on large scale plantation. To this effect, a half-day consultative meeting on experimental wheat cultivation with relevant stakeholders was held on Thursday 31 January 2013 at the Mauritius Research Council. The objectives of the Consultative Meeting were to plan a road map for large scale wheat cultivation in Mauritius and also to identify and define the role of the various stakeholders involved in this project. As a result of the meeting, there has been interest shown by a number of growers to contribute to the pre-commercial phase of the wheat cultivation.

It is expected that the next phase of wheat cultivation will start in April 2013. The harvest is expected to start in September 2013.
