WGC-HSBC NEWS

“To shoot 63 in a final round is always great, but on a golf course like this and in a World Golf

Championships is obviously special. The way I played was different. It was really special. I can’t

remember a day when I played golf like this. My putting was outstanding,” said the 26-year-old, who,

having won the 2010 PGA Championship becomes the first of golf’s new breed to follow up his first big

breakthrough win with another top-level victory.

Kaymer’s late charge lifted him above a leader board that seemed to have most of the contenders to the

crown of being the game’s next dominant player. Reigning US Open champion Rory McIlroy and Masters

champion Charl Schwartzel finished tied for fourth along with Paul Casey while 2010 US Open winner

Graeme McDowell came third.

“If Martin Kaymer had not skipped the last couple of holes, we might all have had a chance,” joked the

Northern Irishman, who got to see some of Kaymer’s fireworks from the group behind. “He's an

unbelievable frontrunner; when he gets a sniff of a win -- he's pretty prolific and very clinical when it

comes to finishing. Hats off to him! He's a classy player and he was impossible to catch out there.”

“He played very solid golf,” declared Kaymer of the former security guard.

“He's a long hitter. His putting is brilliant, so I can see him playing well in the future. I had never

heard of him before, but you've got to watch out, there are more players coming from Asia and he's

probably one of the better ones!” he added.

For Kaymer, his victory shone a different light on a year that started with a stunning victory at the

Martin Kaymer ended the run of first-time winners

lifting the sport’s top trophies and lifted himself

above the crowd when he won the WGC-HSBC

Champions. Shooting a record low winning round

for the World Golf Championships, the German’s

nine birdies in his last nine holes propelled him over

a leader board packed with recent WGC and Major

winners and past overnight leader Fredrik Jacobson

to a nine-under-par 63 final round and a three-shot

victory.

Whenever you do something around your home, have you ever noticed how you would invariably

stand back and think of ways to improve the existing arrangement? Well, this is what Sheshan Golf

Club has been experiencing. With the end of this year’s WGC-HSBC Champions, and 2012

approaching near, there’s never been a better time to embark on renovation projects than now!

Change is inevitable, as the saying goes, so why not make the change extraordinary? With this in

mind, the renovation plan for the Club’s banquet room includes Tuscan designed walls, wood-based

table tops and chandeliers. This creates an ambience of magnificent space, coupled with vast

elegance and grace as you enter the banquet room.

The Club’s renovation plans do not stop here as there is still the revamp of its VIP rooms! All three

rooms are uniquely designed as they incorporate the different essences of each theme – the

Luxurious, the Japanese and the Oriental. The “Luxurious” VIP room is designed by the same

renowned French designer who designed the Havana club. The “Japanese” VIP room is designed by

a well-known Japanese design firm from Tokyo, and I’m sure it will capture your heart in its

authentic taste and immaculate flavour. The “Oriental” VIP room is specially designed by a well-

versed Chinese designer who effectively expresses the richness and distinctiveness of the Chinese

culture through the room’s entire setting. Having only the top designers in this renovation process,

be assured to anticipate, relax and give in to the luxurious freedom of these spaces.

Moreover, plans to revamp the La Toscana restaurant and the balcony facing the 9th and 18th holes

will surprise you. Glass panels, comfortable sofas, intricate tiling rounds up the entire Tuscan feel of

the clubhouse. You can take a sip of coffee, sink into a pleasant morning buzz and bask in the

morning sun all in one spot.

The sound of drill bits hammering through the walls of the clubhouse can be annoying. However,

once all the renovations are done, the Club will be of superior class and lavishness, leaving you to

enjoy the luxury of the clubhouse’s improved facilities!

SHESHAN GOLF SCHOOL

Sheshan Junior Fall

Series

It’s been an exciting few months for junior golf at Sheshan with over 20 different junior

members coming out and participating in our 2011 Fall Junior Series. The Fall Junior Series

is a 7 event series of nine hole junior tournaments held on Saturday afternoons. The Junior

Series’ goal is to build and grow the game of golf for our young members of Sheshan by

providing children with the opportunity to play in fun, social golf events.

On Saturday, December 10th the Sheshan Golf School will host the inaugural Sheshan Junior

Championship. The Junior Championship will feature the top 16 players competing for the

title of best junior golfer at Sheshan. Throughout the 7 event series, juniors have been

receiving points based on each tournament’s performance. The golf school has kept a

season long points list, allowing juniors to follow along and see each week who is leading

the season long competition.

Points for the Sheshan Junior Championship will double, as this is the final junior golf

event for the 2011 season. After finishing their 18-hole competition, juniors and parents

are invited to attend a prize and awards ceremony starting at 18:00 in the Toscana

Restaurant. The Sheshan Golf School will be hosting a guest speaker from the United

States and will be debuting our plans for junior golf development at Sheshan for 2012.

We invite all Sheshan members, parents, and children to come and attend the event, and

help us celebrate a fantastic finale to a wonderful Junior Fall Series.

Round of the Quarter

By Cyrus Janssen

To be continued…

Page 6: E-newsletter Dec #1

The round of the quarter at Sheshan International Golf Club belongs to an accomplished

player in his own right. Feldman Tan, a former Singaporean National Team Member

who has honed his game to match the toughest opponent lit the course up in the

month of October and November. Playing with the Director of Golf, Jeff Palmer, one

overcast October day, Feldman hit shots that were like darts into the green. He wound

up with five birdies and shot a one under par 71, barely breaking a sweat. Although

Feldman would fire the round of the quarter, this 71 did not top the list.

Heading into the last day of the Club Championship, 2011 Feldman Tan trailed the

leader by three shots after opening with a disappointing 80. He spent the afternoon

and into the waning hours of daylight the day before the final round disconsolate but

determined. Even as the sun disappeared over the rim of the earth he could be seen

practicing his putting and chipping, the very thing that let him down during his first

round. He would be ready come hell or highwater.

Under a brilliant sun, Feldman teed up his ball on the first tee with his memory washed

of the mediocrity from the day before. He would only look forward. With the pin

positions reflecting the difficulty of a major championship Feldman Tan struck the ball

with precision and putted like a cagey veteran enroute to a 74 under the tremendous

pressure of tournament golf. He claimed victory by 8 shots as the rest of the field

struggled in the tough conditions. This round qualifies as the round of the quarter…

congratulations Mr. Tan!

GOLF RULES

How Golf Handicap Index System Actually Works

With a handicap system, weaker golfer is given some strokes on holes in golf course. That means, on any particular hole, the weak player may be permitted to 'take stroke' or deduct stroke from his score for that particular hole. The two golfers of varying abilities, at the end of round, can figure out their 'new score' which is obtained as, 'gross scores minus number of strokes they were permitted to take on particular holes'.

Golf Handicap Index system by USGA received a refinement in the year 1980 with introduction of 'slope rating' for golf course, joining the venerable 'course rating' as a method of rating difficulty of a golf course.

Course Rating can be defined as the number of overall strokes a particular tees set is anticipated to be played in by upper half of 'scratch golfers'. A United States Golf Association rating of '74.8' implies that 74.8 is anticipated to be average score of best 50% of rounds played by the scratch golfers. As far as slope rating goes, it refers to the number representing relative difficulty of course for 'bogey golfers' compared to the course rating. The slope can vary from 55 - 155, with '113' being taken as the golf-course of average-difficulty.

Things You Should Know About Golf Handicap Index

'Par' has no role to play in computing handicap indexes, only slope rating, course rating and adjusted gross scores are included in the computation. 'Adjusted Gross Score' is player's total number of strokes after permitting for maximum pre hole total allowed under 'Equitable Stroke Control'.

With 5 rounds, a golfer can get golf handicap index by joining the clubs allowed to issue theme. Ultimately, handicap index is computed using ten best of a player's twenty most recent game rounds. Once a United States Golf Association Handicap Index is issued, the players can use that to figure out their course handicap. After receiving Course handicap, a player is read to enjoy the game equally with any other golf player in world.

It is also important to learn the strategies and tips to improve your game at the same time. Golf gears play an important role, so shop golf equipment that suits your style. A golf handicap index system is an essential way to determine a golfer's ability for playing as per the difficulty level of the golf course. It is also important to be honest.

Handicapping – Level the Playing Field

By Jeff Palmer

To be continued…

The key purpose of Golf Handicap Index has always been to level playing fields for golf players of varying abilities, so that those players can equally compete. For instance, imagine an individual with average score 92 who is trying to play against another golfer with average score of 72. Without golf handicap index system, it cannot be done, not fairly at least. This system was introduced by United States Golf Association (USGA) in earlier years of twentieth century.

GOLF RULES

Here is a funny story about the importance of being honest about your handicap:

A businessman was attending a conference in Africa. He had a free day and wanted to play a round of golf and was directed to a golf course in the nearby jungle. After a short journey, he arrived at the course and asked the pro if he could get on.. "Sure," said the Pro, "What's your handicap?"

Not wanting to admit that he had an 18 handicap, he decided to cut it a bit.

"Well, its 16," said the businessman, "But what's the relevance since I'll be playing alone?" "It's very important for us to know," said the pro, who then called a caddy. "Go out with this gentleman," said the pro, "his handicap is 16." The businessman was very surprised at this constant reference to his handicap. The caddy picked up the businessman’s bag and a large rifle; again the businessman was surprised but decided to ask no questions.

They arrived on the 1st hole, a par 4. "It's wise to avoid those trees on the left," said the caddy. Needless to say, the businessman duck-hooked his ball into the trees. He found his ball and was about to punch it out when he heard the loud crack of the rifle and a large snake fell dead from a tree above his head. The caddy stood next to him with the rifle smoking in his hand. "That's the Black Mamba, the most poisonous snake in all Africa. You're lucky I was here with you."

After taking a bogey, they moved to the 2nd hole, a par 5.

"Good to avoid those bushes on the right," says the caddy. Of course, the businessman’s ball went straight into the bushes. As he went to pick up his ball, he heard the loud crack of the caddy's rifle once more, and a huge lion fell dead at his feet.

"I've saved your life again," said the caddy. The 3rd hole was a par 3 with a lake in front of the green. The businessman’s ball came up just short of the green and rolled back to the edge of the water. To take a shot, he had to stand with one foot in the lake. As he was about to swing, a large crocodile emerged from the water and bit off much of his right leg. As he fell to the ground bleeding and in great pain, he saw the caddy with the rifle propped at his side, looking on unconcernedly. "Why didn't you kill it?" asked the man incredulously. "I'm sorry, sir," said the caddy. "This is the 17th handicap hole. You don't get a shot here."
