VSM (RETD) EDITOR

It’s very heartening to note that Noida Golf Club E-News Letter, both the July and August Editions were very well received by the members. Many encouraging responses have been received.

Now, the princess of all months brings with it a welcome relief from the sultry summer heat and monsoon humidity. Amateurs are now dreaming of the joy of rounds of golf in the soothing and pleasant weather. Pros are planning their programme for winning pro points to push their career upwards with a winning streak.

The monsoon was very good in NCR this August . I think it was worth its watery effect and bonus on the precious agriculture produce. Our Greens Committee and its team of green keepers have kept the Course in very good shape; They deserve big compliments, not having to resort to play on temporary Greens. With temperature in September at lower 30s, members can enjoy golf throughout the day and participate in coming tournaments.

NGC too has seen welcome development. The Swimming Pool was inaugurated with much fanfare, hope and expectation. Proud moment for NGC and happy to have a swimming pool. Time to soak in the facility and make full use of it.

NGC Golfers are doing great and we are extremely proud of them .Three members of our Club, as part of the Indian Golf Team, competed admirably with the South African National Golf Team in a Ryder Cup Format in South Africa. Vijay Kumar, Gagan Verma and Simarjeet Singh have once again made us all proud.

Noida Golf Club was the host to the prestigious IGU NORTHERN INDIA JUNIORS played from 22-25 August 2017. CHITRATH JETHI, TANMAY RAHEJA, RAGHAV KHARB, AKHSAT SHARMA, SUKHMAN SINGH and VINAMRA ANAND were the Junior Golfers from NGC stable that brought laurels to NGC and did us all proud.

We are happy to announce that the Golfing season in NGC will start with a big bang with the annual tournament of NGC Vs. Indian Navy Team on Saturday -9th September 2017.

The Fun Tournament will be held for NGC members on 16th September 2017. As the name connotes there will be plenty of fun with exciting prizes and refreshments. The Medal Round for September is slated for 24th September 2017

I once again request all our members to participate in E-news. I am sure with your continued support and the vision of our Board President, E-news will continue to enrich member experience at NGC.

Tracing the roots of growth of golf in India is an appreciable endeavour of the authors. They covered the trek with Mr. Moti Lal, a renowned and eminent golfing professional and coach and a familiar and devoted member of NGC to discover the process through a journey of six generations of the Lal Family, wedded to the game. The article

will appear in a series in the coming issues beginning September….Editor

SEPTEMBER EDITION

ABOUT A LEGENDIN OUR MIDST

Breaking all the myths that the sport belongs to the British, the forefathers of Mr Moti Lal, originally farmers rooted to a small village in Bihar, not only learnt and practiced golf but also taught golf to the officials and bureaucrats of colonial times. Since 1882 the family has been committed to promote the sport across the country and have left no stones unturned.

Mr. Ram Jatan, Mr. Moti Lal’s great grandfather sparked the tradition of golf

when he migrated from Bihar to Assam for greener pastures. He learnt the game and took to teaching golf, became the first Indian Golf Professional. The batten was passed to his son Mr. Srikishan, the 2nd generation. Srikishan’s talent of teaching was noticed by the British playing at the course and offered him a job in Golf Course in Shillong. Mr. Hira Lal, Mr. Moti Lal’s father, of the 3rd generation spent four decades teaching Golf at Delhi Golf Club.

Born in Delhi Golf Club itself, Mr Moti Lal is nostalgic about DGC. He moved out from there only post independence to settle near

Khan Market. Learning the game from his father Mr Moti Lal took to golf like fish to water.

“Golf is my profession and my passion, but more than anything else it is one of the greatest responsibilities that I got from my father and the responsibility was to promote the game and transfer the knowledge of the game through teaching to all those who have inclination or curiosity towards the game.” Says Moti Lal. Rightly so. He has given the game and NGC his all.

Moti Lal has remained associated with several clubs around the country such as Delhi Golf Club, Gorakhpur

Golf Club, Bhopal Golf Club, Bhubaneswar Golf Club, Noida Golf Club, Belgaum Golf Course, Vadodra Golf Club, DLW Golf Club, Beldih Golf Club, Raj Bhawan Golf Club Nainital, Crossing Republic Golf Club and many more. We are convinced he has added to his family heritage of promoting the game all around.

He fondly says “ NGC is the closest to my heart” as we see him pouring deep into his memory lane for a moment as if visualising all that he has given to and taken from his association with this Course.Moti Lal ventured into golf equipment. One of his many creations, Delhi Golf House is the First International Training Facility which is recognised by United States Golf Association in India. He currently is a board member for Professional Golfers Association of India. The legacy is recorded in Limca Book of records. Out of his passion , to make golf close to hearts and easy for people Moti Lal gives free golf lessons and coaching time to those who seek to learn golf. He carries on the family tradition to promote the game in his own unique way.

Both his sons, Mr Anil Kashyap and Mr Sandy Kashyap, the 5th generation in the family, have proudly taken the responsibility ahead and are Golf Professionals, taking forward the family heritage to make golf more popular among the commons.

Sandy, is already the founder of Hitters Junior Golf Tour. He is working to develop passion and promote the game among junior players. The legacy continues where Viraj and Yashiswini, the 6th generation of the family, grandchildren of Moti Lal also have started learning the sport.

It was quoted by Amir Ali Hashmi, in Crossing Insight Magazine of the Crossing Republic Golf Course “The towering building around the golf courses is unable to belittle the towering personality of Moti Lal who is all set to churn out good golfers”.

Moti Lal summarises 135 years of golf in India, in the form of short stories, through association of his family with the sport. Hearing the humorous, captivating and evocative true incidents and stories is a delight and satiating food for the soul and appetizer for the game at the same time. Moti Lal has passed on his heritage to his next generation. He adorns many hats. He is a qualified astrologer, gemmologist, Vastu Expert, Physiologist, Face Reader and a Sharp Shooter. He practices astrology from his office based out of Noida. In the subsequent parts we will take you through the journey of the family heritage and its contribution to NGC club and the game at large.

Dr. Bharat RamDr Bharat Ram along with Mr Dharam Vira and Mr Vishnu Sahay were the founder members of the

Delhi Golf Club. They saved the Club from closing in 1950. It was on his initiative Indian Open was

started in 1964. Apart from mobilising funds and event management team, he invited Peter Thomson

and other top golfers to participate in the Indian Open. In the absence of star (***) rated hotels, he

played host to some pros in his house. His company had sponsored DCM Open Golf Tournament .

In 1974-75 Dr Bharat Ram was the captain of the Delhi Golf Course. He specially invited his friend Peter

Thomson, three time Indian Open Winner, to re-do the layout. Of course, the course has undergone

changes there after also.

He was passionate about golf and wanted ladies to be part of the gold fraternity. While on a trip to

Mumbai in the 50s he brought back a ladies golf set and presented to the Ladies Section of the Club.

Dr Bharat Ram was fond of cards. Once he played cards whole night. In the morning he changed into

golf kit in the car and teed off early. No wonder he brought a card of 69, a record that stood for quite

some time. He said later, “I can only attribute this to the fact that I simply could not lift my head”.

He passed away in Jul 2007 at the age of 93.

A TRIBUTE

Randhawa’s…. A family of GolfersIt all started with Lt Col Kaka (HS) Randhawa of the Indian Army (JAT Regt) He was a very knowledgeable

golfer and instilled love of golf in his two sons,Bamby and Bunty. Bamby was sent to France on golf

scholarship. He returned from there after polishing his game to become leading golfer on the Indian

pro circuit. Both brothers turned professional in late 70s. Bamby remained a sober golfer while Bunty

turned out to be a killer golfer. They were among top professionals in the 80s.

Jyoti Randhawa is a nephew of Col Randhawa. His father BrigDhirusssssssss Randhawa was in the

army. He picked up his golf from his illustrious brothers. Bunty used to caddy for him in some

tournaments. Jyoti has won India Open thrice apart from other laurels. One word suffices….a complete

gentleman golfer. Another product of Randhawa family is Raj Randhawa, son of Inderpal Randhawa

and nephew of Jyoti. He had turned professional in 2007.

Four professionals in a family!

Biggest Chokers on the Pro-CircuitTwo highly ranked and talented golfers, Greg Norman and Sergio Gracia are known to be the great

’chokers’on the pro circuit, especially as the 72nd hole approaches. After 136 British Open defeat on

the play off, Sergio Gracia commented, “I should write a bookon how not tomiss a shot in a play off

and shoot one over”

Hitting it LongEvery budding golfer dreams of hitting three hundred yarder. As propagated by golf pundits, it is the

timing at the time of contact that gives you the distance, other ingredients of good golfers are

ingrained in the ‘Timing’’. One’s height, weight and reach are not the dominating factors. Club Head

Speed up to 135-140miles per hour is achieved by the super long hitters. World record is in the name

of Jason Zuback of 412 yards as measured by Long Drivers Association .Zuback is only 5 ft 9 in tall

but he achieves a club head speed of 147 miles per hour. Amongst the ladies Jo D, a 6ft 2in tall

achieved a distance of 296 yards.

Friends concentrate on ‘club head speed’…..also

it is on the chipping line of your ball He voluntarily marks his ball to allow you to chip.

2. Your playing partner hits his ball in the woods. The ball is lost, so he drops a ball next to the point

where the ball entered the woods, take a penalty stroke and plays on.

3. Your opponent marks his ball next to the hole after three shots, when she replaces it a wind gust

blows it in the hole. She writes her score as three and plays on.

4. Your opponent uses a bottle cap as a tee.

5. Your playing partner hits his ball into a water hazard. Rather than playing it takes a penalty drop and

his ball rolls into a bunker. He then hits the shot.

the ball. He claims he’s entitled to a free drop because he could not see the ball to hit it. So he

takes a relief and hits the next shot.

taps it anyway.

8. Your partner’s ball is on the green. He wants to clean it, so he puts his hat on the ground to mark

the ball, picks up the ball and cleans it.
