Hello everyone,

Firstly, I should like to thank Joy Mayall for all of her tireless work as chairman and for the support she has given me since I received the honour of being appointed in April.

For those of you who don’t know me, I am a rubber bridge host playing at the Avenue in Hove. I also play a fair bit of duplicate and team bridge.

As you probably all aware, numbers are in decline at pretty much all the clubs in the county. Whilst I think some people can be encouraged back to play by an increase in the standard of behaviour, I believe the future of Sussex Bridge lies in recruiting for young people to the game.

So we will be continuing and hopefully growing, the Bridge in Schools initiative, but I will be looking to encourage clubs to get more youngsters into lessons feeding into their club sessions. This will have the dual benefit of increasing memberships at clubs and ultimately the county

I am planning to meet as many of you as possible over the coming year at your club duplicate sessions and look forward to receiving your comments and suggestions. Secondly, I should like to apologise for the lateness of this Yearbook due to some horrendous production problems.

As you are probably all aware, numbers are in decline at pretty much all the clubs in the county. DETAILS OF COUNTY COMPETITIONS 2014 - 2015

Eligibility to play in County Events

Players must be direct members of the County Association or members of a club affiliated to SCCBA with the ex-ception of the Basic Bridge Pairs, Charity Simultaneous Pairs, Senior Simultaneous Pairs, Welcome Pairs and Venture Pairs, Elisabeth North Trophy and heats of the David Pavey Trophy.

In addition, to play in the Championship Teams of Four and the Sussex Pairs Championship, players must have Sussex as their county of allegiance.

CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS OF FOUR - Championship Teams Cup

Holders : J Mitchell, P Clinch, A Ryder, P Poulter, D Quibell, P Lindsten Teams playing in a knockout competition. Teams losing their first match will have free entry to a Plate competition. The winners or if unavailable the runners-up will represent the County in the Pachabo Cup to be played at Nottingham on 7th & 8th June 2014.

SUSSEX PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP - Melville Memorial Trophy

Holders : Roger Poulter & Pyers Pennant

Heats held in Clubs on various dates. Qualifiers play in the final at West Sussex Bridge Club on Saturday 14th March. The leading pairs will represent the County in the Reg Corwen Trophy to be played at Northampton on 30th & 31st May 2015. Green point awards to all finalists (subject to total entry).

The event for 2014 will be held at Haywards Heath Golf Club. 18 holes of Golf will be played in the morning. Stableford scoring using full handicap. Lunch will be included followed by bridge. CHARITY SIMULTANEOUS PAIRS - Joe Gibson Memorial Trophy

Holders:

A pairs event played in Clubs between the 12th and 16th January 2015. Computer scored across the whole event, with master points awarded. A copy of the hands, with commentary, is made available to every player. Proceeds from the competition are donated to Sussex based charities selected by the County Committee. County members may nominate charities for the committee to consider. Membership of the SCCBA/EBU is not necessary. Players only partake in one heat.
