Cantor Marcia Tilchin

“The trip of a thousand miles begins with the first step…”

T his was my selected “favorite quote” on my senior

yearbook page as a graduating 9th grader from Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit. At the ripe old age of 14, I could never have imagined that later in life I would spend upwards of two decades in pursuit of a dual seminary degree. Nonetheless, this prophetic adage has remained a source of strength and encouragement for me in my twenty-year effort to complete rabbinical school. I entered cantorial school at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1992 and in 1995 applied to rabbinical school. For several years I augmented my cantorial class schedule with one or two rabbinical school requirements. By the time I received my cantorial degree in 2000, I had the equivalent of one full year of rabbinical school under my belt. In the two years leading up to our family move to Tustin, I was able to squeeze in another year of classes. I moved west with hopes of completing my studies at Ziegler, but had no idea what that would look like in real time. I began traveling up to AJU (then “The University of Judaism”) in the fall of 2005, taking one course per semester. That was fun, but not a viable long-term plan if I was to make tangible progress towards my ultimate goal. In 2009 I took the

Dear Friends,

W riting offers me the opportunity to study and grow

and when a book is completed to teach- both actively and through the book itself. It is already fifteen years since I wrote Does the Soul Survive? During those years I have had the privilege to address a broad array of audiences. In the course of the book signings, many have shared their extraordinary experiences around the death of a loved one. The recently released second edition has a new introduction that reflects those experiences and my ongoing reflections as a juror as to how to weigh the evidence that touches on survival of the soul. The new book, Increasing Wholeness, is the product of years of teaching at CBI. Those classes served as my laboratory for exploring how participants could access their own inner wisdom. Close to five years ago, I had students from Chapman’s Dodge School of Film videotape my classes. I knew that what I had to offer were guided visualizations, but I did not yet know how I could integrate those experiences with the written word. A couple of years ago, I came across a new book that used QR codes to enable linking the written word with youtubes that could be placed on a smart phone. Sheila Witzling served as my primary film maker

and director, enabling the creation of thirty youtubes. These videos will accompany the writing. For my publisher, Jewish Lights, it is their first book that will utilize this technology. You can go to youtube now and put in my name and find an array of offerings. When the book emerges toward the beginning of April as both a printed text and an electronic book, you will be able to appreciate this new way of engaging with ideas. So much of the new book focuses on imagination as a bridge to intuitive wisdom. A reoccurring phrase among the sages is “as if.” On Passover, for instance, we read in the Haggadah, "In each generation a person is to see him or herself as if he or she went out from Egypt.” With our imagination, we expand our identity by making collective memory personal. I invite you at your Passover table to pause and share some Bibiodrama with questions like: As a slave, what is your day like? When you get up in the morning in one word, what do you feel? This man Moses says that God has sent him to take you out of Egypt, what are your questions for Moses? Are you prepared to follow him and his God? As you stand on the other side of the Reed River, having reached freedom, what are your thoughts and feelings? I wish you a Happy Pesech -

a Pesech that expands and deepens your sense of belonging and your celebration of the gifts of freedom.

plunge and formally matriculated as a full-time Ziegler student, unsure of when I would actually be ordained. It took a village. My loving parents, Asher and Arlene Tilchin, have championed me since the beginning. My incredible husband, Scott, is both SuperDad and SuperFriend. He deeply appreciates my passion to learn in order to inspire, and has done whatever he can to accommodate my need to juggle work and school with family responsibilities – often to the detriment of his own professional aspirations. This is true love! My wonderful children have missed their mother for too long, but thanks to our remarkable babysitter and close friend, Lauren Carroll - who, since 2008 has schlepped, shopped, cooked, tutored, packed, glue-gunned, glittered and everything else - the kids are alright. Most of all, I must express my gratitude to CBI’s fabulous congregation and staff for this achievement. Rabbi Spitz has always understood what the additional scholarship means to me and seen its value-added for our synagogue. Over the years, Sandy Klein, Helene Coulter and Debbie Hebron offered unfailing support, and Lisa Heller, Barbara Sherman and Robin Hoffman have encouraged me along the way. Ultimately, CBI members are the true heroes of this religious quest. Whenever we finish reading a book of the Torah, we recite a three-word formula indicating that all endings segue into new beginnings: "Hazak Hazak v’nithazeik – Have strength, be strong, and you shall be strengthened!” As I begin my next thousand-mile journey as Rabbi Cantor Tilchin, I do so linked arm in arm with YOU. Rabbinic intern Adir Glick and I will be ordained on Tuesday, May 19, at 7:30pm at the American Jewish University, 15600 Mulholland Drive, Bel Air, California. We will be honored by your presence at our shared milestone. A

F ew would argue with the assertion that a necessary

part of any Jewish gathering is the presence of food. From simchas to shiva minyanim, there always seems to be ample food for Jews to nosh on while socializing with one another. We at CBI are blessed to have a wonderful team of women who work tirelessly in the shul's kitchen to ensure that our community's culinary needs are met throughout the year. The kitchen staff is ably supervised by the energetic Maria Ester Rodriguez, who has been a fixture of our synagogue since 2003. Supporting her is a core team of approximately 10 ladies, but the total number of staff may fluctuate depending on the needs of the shul.Maria and her team primarily work on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, but we all know that the demands of

the Jewish calendar, family simchas and shul programming create additional demands on the kitchen staff. To their immense credit, Maria and company have taken pains to learn the intricacies of kashrut as well as the unique challenges of operating a kosher kitchen. Despite those challenges, they have always risen to the occasion with a bright and cheerful demeanor and a sense of pride in their work. In the words of Maria Ester, their ultimate goal is that the congregants "enjoy the food and are happy." So, the next time any of you stop by the kitchen, make sure to thank Maria Ester and her team for all that they do for us! A

The Learning Never EndsBen Bag Bag says, “Turn it, and turn it, for everything is in it. Reflect on it and grow old and gray with it. Don’t turn from it, for nothing is better than it.”

~Pirkei Avot 5:22

E very Tuesday, a group of adults gather in a private home and

turn on to Torah. We discuss it at length, sharing our own thoughts about the stories, the lessons, and the people. As we turn it, we discover new ideas that we had not considered before. I am grateful for the opportunity to turn to Torah each week with these enthusiastic students! Our Religious School students turn to Torah each week as well. From the earliest ages, they tell its stories, practice reading Hebrew, and relate its teachings to their own lives. Well into high school, our students continue to grow with Torah – they discuss Israel, women’s issues, and even popular culture through the lens of Torah. The learning never stops at CBI! With Pesach, we feel the end of the school year upon us. We look forward to celebrating the graduation of our Senior Class on Saturday, May, 9. Mazal Tov to Andrew Cohen, Kali DeCambra, Sarah Kessler, Caroline Kravitz, Haley Lerner, Becky Shane,

Sandy Shane, Courtney Widerman, and Noah Zedek. All are invited to worship withthese outstanding students and to hear their reflections on growing up at CBI. The learning will not stop over the summer! There will be Hebrew tutoring available and Tuesday afternoon Torah class will continue. If you are interested in learning Torah, but can’t come on Tuesdays during the day, please call or email me! Let’s turn it together… A

In the B’nai Israel Family . . .Bar Mitzvah of Harry BermanApril 18, 2015 (29 Nissan)

Harry has attended TVT since Kindergarten. He is fascinated by computer game creation, and takes classes in programming at TVT. At home he has already programmed his first game! He loves biking and playing ping pong, and has participated in ping pong tournaments along with some of his friends. He loves strategy, and plays chess with people of all ages through an app on his phone, as well as Magic card gaming with fellow enthusiasts. For his mitzvah project, Harry has been assisting students with their homework in the TVT lower school homework café. He also helps out in the lower school after school music program, as Harry is proficient in three instruments: piano, clarinet and flute.

Bar Mitzvah of Evan KalminovApril 25, 2015 (6 Iyyar)

Evan is in 7th grade at Tarbut V’Torah where he is on the Principal’s List and enrolled in advanced classes for Science, Math and Hebrew. His favorite subjects are History, Science and Math. He has been on the flag football team and soccer team at TVT. In the rare times he is watching TV, chances are he is watching a sports channel, such as ESPN. Evan has played club soccer for many years and was recently captain of his team where he showed his leadership skills and his love of the sport. For his mitzvah project, Evan spent many Sundays volunteering at Heritage Pointe playing chess, checkers and other various card games with a few of the seniors living there. Evan has spent many hours preparing for his Bar Mitzvah and he is proud to share it with his parents, Robin and Sivon, his brother Nathaniel, his Sabba, his Bubbe and Zaide from Chicago and his aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who are coming from the Midwest and East Coast.

Bat Mitzvah of Miriam BridgerMay 2, 2015 (13 Iyyar)

Miriam is a transplant to CBI from Baltimore. In these past two years Miriam has transitioned beautifully to life in Southern California. She has charged into the preparation for her Bat Mitzvah with gusto and joy. A 6th grader at Woodbury Elementary School, she’s made many friends and excelled academically. Miriam has a huge heart and is very compassionate. She is sensitive to children with special needs and will be working with a buddy at Friendship Circle for her Mitzvah Project. Her rescue puppy, Gemma, is her most treasured companion. When not home reading or singing, she can be found on the tennis court. The Bridgers are ecstatic that relatives and friends from around the world will celebrate this momentous day together with our CBI community.

Bat Mitzvah of Maya ArensonMay 16, 2015 (27 Iyyar)

Maya started at CBI's preschool when she was 2 1/2 years old, initiating her love of Jewish learning. She is currently a 7th grader at Tarbut V'Torah where she is part of the Advanced Institute of Jewish Studies. Maya enjoys musical theater, and she has been performing with JStage for the last several years. Reading, baking, running with our dog, Daisy, and listening to music are some of Maya's favorite activities. For her mitzvah project, Maya raised money to fund her own packing event at Stop Hunger Now. She enlisted family and a few close friends to pack and sort meals and clothing for over 1,700 people in third-world countries.
