In1990,researcherJerrySterninwassentbySavetheChildrentofightseveremalnutritioninruralcommunitiesofVietnam.Whenhisteamofresearchersarrived,theydeterminedthecauseofmalnutritionwaspoorsanitation,poverty,andthelackofeducation.Thesewereenormousissues,toobigforateamofresearcherstomakeadifference.Whattheydidinsteadwassendlocalwomenintovillagestoseeiftheycouldfindoccurrenceswherechildrenwerebiggerandhealthierthantheaveragechild.Twovillageswerenoticeablydifferent,wherethechildrenwerenotmalnourished.Sterninaskedthequestion,“Whatarethemothersofthehealthiestchildrendoingdifferently?Whattheyfoundwerethreestrategiesthatthemothersemployed.First,mostfamiliesinVietnamwereeatingtwomealseachday;themothersofthehealthierchildrentookthesameamountoffoodandbrokeit

intofoursmallermealsspreadthroughoutthedayinsteadoftwolargermeals,makingiteasierforamalnourishedstomachtodigest.Second,theywereaddingthebrineshrimpthatgrewinthericepaddiestotheirchildren’sdiet(thiswasnotcommonastheshrimpwerestigmatizedaslowclassfood).Third,whenservingtheirchildren,theywereladlingfromthebottomofthepot,makingsurethekidsgottheshrimpandgreensthathadsettledduringcooking.Sternincalledthesefamilies“brightspots”–theywereproducingamazingresultswiththesameresourcesavailabletoothers.(Storytakenfrom:Heath,ChipandDanHeath.Switch:HowtoChangeWhen

Themostimportantpartofanyorganizationisit’speople.Aftertheschoolyearstarted,wehiredanumberofsupportstafftofilltheneedsinourclassrooms.Wewantedtotaketimetointroduceournewesteditions:
• Mrs.MaryStitleyisworkinginoursecondgradeclassroom,supportingMrs.Hawkinson’ssecondgradeclass.
• Mr.JivanHertzogismentoringinthe5thgradeclassrooms;withlargernumbersingrade5,Mr.HertzogissupportingstudentsinmathematicswithMs.McDonald.
• Mrs.AlegraQuaneisprovidingenrichmentandinterventiontostudentsinK-6.Mrs.Quaneisworkingandplanningwithallteacherstosupportstudentswithstretchedlearningactivitiesforsomeandre-teachingofconceptsforothers.

Parents,markyourcalendarsforNovember7-22fortheHanaleiSchoolParentTeacherConferencedays.Schoolreleasetimewillbeat12:50overthecourseofthosetendays.WhydoesHanaleiSchoolneedtendaysforconferences?It’salogicalquestion.Parentconferencestraditionallyconsistoftheteacherandparentsittingdowntolookovergradesandstudentwork.TheHanaleiStaffhasbeenpreparingstudentstoleadtheirownconferences.Thisisatremendousundertaking.Studentsarelearningtoevaluatetheirownworksamples,settheirownacademicandbehavioralgoalsbasedontheirfirstquarterperformance,compiletheirportfolios,andthenpresenttheirinformationinanoralformat.Mostclasseswillbeusingastudent-ledconferencestyleandthesetaketime.Thepayoffisaninvaluablelearningexperienceforourstudents.

Asweallknowandexperience,thetrafficandcongestioninourparkinglothasbeenanongoingconcern.Wehaveapprovaltore-routethebussesintheafternoontopickupthestudentsontheaccessroadadjacenttotheCafeteria.EffectiveTuesday,November1,studentsridingthefirstroundofbusseswillloadtheirbusfromthenewlocation.Weanticipatethiscreatingasafercurbsidepickupprocessinthemainparkinglotwhilestillbeingefficientandsafeforourbusriders.Ifyourchildridesthebus,wewillbetrainingstudentsonthepickupprocedurepriortoimplementation.Thearrivingmorningbussesandsecondroundriderswillcontinuetodropoffandpickupatthemainparkinglotlocation.

Farm to school ThisOctober,HanaleiSchool’sWellnessCommitteewillbetakingstepstowardestablishinga“FarmtoSchool”Program.OurCommitteewillbeworkingwiththeStateofHawaiiDepartmentofAgriculture,DistrictleadershipandtheUSDAFarmtoSchoolStaff. WeapplaudHawaii”sDepartmentofEducationforsettingnutritionalgoals,oneof whichsoundslikethis: “Schoolmealsfeaturefreshandminimallyprocessedfruitsandvegetablesfromlocalsourcestothegreatestextentpossible.TheDepartment'sSchoolFoodServiceBranchis collaboratingwithvendorsandfarmerstoensuretheuseoffreshandminimallyprocessedfruitsandvegetablesinallmealprograms.” Overthepastdecade,thefarmtoschoolmovementhasexplodedacrosstheUnitedStates,reachingmillionsofstudentsinall50states.Farmtoschoolisanimportanttoolinthefightagainstchildhoodobesityandfoodinsecurity.Inadditiontoimprovingchildhealth,whenschoolsbuylocal,theycreatenewmarketsforlocalandregionalfarmers,awin-winscenario!
