    A Kolkata-based hospital leverages e-governance for tropical medicine. Thehospital employs tele-medicine to assistdoctors in rural areas as they analyseand treat panchayat residents. Thismethod does away with patients havingto travel all the way to Kolkata for

    treatment. Patients feel better beingexamined in their own village. Usingtele-medicine, the hospital is able todispense its expertise to far-flung

    The Karnataka governments Bhoomiproject has led to the computerisationof the centuries-old system ofhandwritten rural land records. Throughit, the revenue department has doneaway with the corruption-ridden systemthat involved bribing village

    accountants to procure land records;records of right, tenancy and cultivationcertificates (RTCs). The project isexpected to benefit seventy lakh

    villagers in 30,000 villages.

    A farmer can walk into the nearest talukoffice and ask for a computer printout

    of his land record certificate for Rs 15.He can also check details of landrecords on a touch-screen kiosk byinserting a two-rupee coin. These

    kiosks, installed at the taluk office, willprovide the public with a convenientinterface to the land records centre.

    In Gujarat there are websites wherecitizens log on and get access to theconcerned government department onissues such as land, water and taxes.

    In Hyderabad, through e-Seva, citizenscan view and pay bills for water,electricity and telephones, besidesmunicipal taxes. They can also avail ofbirth / death registration certificates,passport applications, permits /licences, transport department services,
