OBJECTIVES: 1 MAKING EDUCATION ACCESSIBLE

According to a UNESCO report ; 73% of Liberian children are denied an education – with over 80% of them being girls. Children denied an education, ends up on the streets involved in crime.

Education Liberia will; Build and equip schools across Liberia, Create primary education opportunity in every village in

Liberia, Reduce the number of children to school ratio, Parents in Liberia can be perpetrators of denials, seek

legislations to caution parents denying their kids an education,

Advocate free education in government schools, Where possible build learning resource centres in villages in

Liberia

OBJECTIVES: 2 IMPROVING THE STANDARD

THE STATE OF LIBERIA’S EDUCATION SYSTEM –A REALITY FOR MOST LIBERIAN CHILDREN

Liberia Location: West Africa Population: 3.4 million(2008 census) Recently emerged from 14 years of civil war

(1989-2003) Post-war Liberia: 80% unemployment;

extreme poverty (63.81%), average earnings is less than £1 a day

STATE OF LIBERIA’S EDUCATION

Literacy rate:  estimated at 60.8% (64.8% for males and 56.8% for females) in 2010

Free compulsory primary and secondary education for ages of 6-16,

Inadequate schools and supplies lack of qualified teachers. State of many public schools Overcrowded Poor condition Inadequate equipment Insufficient classroom space Limited or no access to internet and computers continues to

be a huge challenge

EDUCATION LIBERIA’S BELIEF

Unnecessary extreme injustice An abuse of human rights and especially for

children; a severe breach of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC, 1989)

The way forward Education is critically important in breaking

the vicious cycle of poverty to bring about lasting peace, stability and sustainable development.

Achieve Universal Primary Education by 2015: United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

WHAT CENTRAL GOVERNMENT HAS DONE SO FARAIMS AT REACHING UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION BY 2015 – ONE OF THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDGS)

Central Government took the following actions from 2006-2011:

built and rehabilitated schools free compulsory primary education (Education reform Act

2011) Ministry Of Education: arm of government primarily

responsible for planning and implementing national education policies to ensure acceptable education standards

Increased level of support to state-owned institutions and subsidies provided to private ones. vocational and technical training  for those less able to pursue a full academic program expanded

Reactivated Rural Teachers Training Institutes (RTTIs) Teachers wages increased from US$30 to a minimum of

US$200 a month Students enrolment increased nationwide from 1 million to

1.5 million nationwide

THE WAY FORWARD

Liberia has massive needs in education. On 15 march 2013 President Sirleaf acknowledged the

quality of education has declined far below acceptable standards

Liberia’s education system is far from achieving the MDG of universal primary education by 2015

A recent UNESCO’’s Learning Metrics Tasks Force Report, titled: ‘Toward Universal Learning: What Every Child Should Learn’ suggests Liberia is nowhere near achieving the targets set in the various capabilities.

Compared to developed nations like UK using education statistics from UNESCO World Development Indicators, Liberia is at the bottom of the list, its education is the poorest in the WA region according to UNICEF.

CONCLUSION

Education Liberia is a charity established to help improve the education standards of Liberians and Liberia.

We intend to promote education as the means to reduce violence and non-tolerance.

We believe that if Liberians understand the many attributes and goals we have in common, we will learn to live better with each other.

It is the hope of the board of trustees that the information provided will encourage you to take up membership of Education Liberia and be a part of the generation that reduces illiteracy in Liberia and offer the next generation a better start to life
