Sharing best practice: Promoting Jisc e-books for FE
• If you have a library induction programme, tell students about the e-books available to them. Some organisations give flyers and bookmarks featuring details of e-books relevant to their course. Demonstrate how to search Ebook Central™ during library induction sessions
• Use the Bookshelf function of Ebook Central™ to create shareable bookshelves of relevant titles for subject and qualification areas. These can be shared via email, or links can be placed in the VLE
• Catalogue the books so that they are included in your LMS. This will increase their discoverability for students
• Create posters to promote the most popular titles for your organisation. If you use QR codes, these can be a quick and easy way to direct students to relevant e-book titles
• Integrate links to e-books into your VLE. This has been reported by several organisations to be a key factor in increasing visibility of e-books, and therefore increasing usage of titles
• Promote titles on a monthly or weekly basis to students or teaching practitioners. Ideas include selecting a title as ‘e-books of the month’

Included links in online course study
guides
We have integrated our e-books into the
VLE
Promoted during
information skills
workshops
We have created shareable subject lists on heritage and shared on e-posters for staff and also in subject guides on the VLE
QR codes can also be posted on relevant book shelves and at locations around campus e.g. classrooms where students and staff will spot them
We also add links to key
texts on subject
Moodle pages
We focus on online resources and how to use e-
books in our information sessions and create subject guides with links to specific
e-books for each course
We have put e-book links into specific courses on our
VLE. This have proved popular with staff and
students. The only downside is that students
don't realise these are library resources, so don't
rate them in our library feedback survey
We put on sessions at our teaching staff
development day -offering help to staff on how to add book links
to their VLE
We focus on online resources and how to use e-books in our
information sessions and create subject guides with links to
specific e-books for each course
We direct email teaching staff with images of the
front cover of books relevant to their subject area and hyper link the
images to the LMS.
We stick a large e on the spine of the print books we have in stock to draw
attention to the fact that they are available as an e-book. We are also working with tutors looking at their
Canvas pages to update with any useful e-books for that course
As lots of our learners browse the shelves, we have created 'dummy' eBooks using empty dvd cases with the book cover image on the front and details of how to access on the back.
This has led learners to develop an awareness of the
e-books we have
