ANOREXIA
4 Primary Symptoms
WARNING SIGNS
Dramatic weight loss. Frequent comments about feeling “fat”
despite weight loss. Anxiety about gaining weight. Denial of hunger.
HEALTH CONSEQUENCES
Abnormally slow heart rate and low blood pressure.
Reduction of bone density. Dehydration. Fainting, fatigue, and overall weakness.
BULIMIA
3 Primary Symptoms
WARNING SIGNS
Evidence of binge eating. Excessive rigid exercise regimens. Unusual swelling of cheeks and jaw area. Discoloration or staining of teeth.
HEALTH CONSEQUENCES
Electrolyte imbalance. Inflammation and possible rupture of the
esophagus. Tooth decay and staining from stomach
acids. Chronic irregular bowl movements and
constipation.
BINGE
Is characterized primarily by periods of uncontrolled, impulsive or continuous eating.
No purging but sporadic fast or repetitive diets.
TREATMENT OF EATING DISORDERS
Treatment for an ED includes counseling,medical and nutritional needs.
Care is provided by licensed heath professionals, including psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, dietitian, primary care physician.
Must address the eating disorder symptoms,psychological, biological, interpersonal, and culture forces that contribute or maintain eating disorders.
PREVENTION OF EATING DISORDERS
Prevention is only a systematic attempt to change the circumstance that promote, eating disorders.
Eating Disorders are serious and complex problems.
Prevention programs for schools and communities.
Eating disorders are not just a “women’s problem”
