Happy February!  This month we are going to focus on some Web 2.0 technology tools and talk about how we could use these tools with Say It, Play It, Relay It, Weigh It (SPRW).  Technology is one of those resources that can be used throughout the process.  From the emotional hook in Say It all the way to the assessment components in Weigh It, technology can be a powerful tool in our schools.  We need to take advantage of all the resources at our disposal to prepare students for the 21st Century.

Likely some of these resources might be blocked at your school. However use this as an opportunity to have a discussion with your technology and administrative staff.  Why are those resources blocked?  Is it the tool?  Is there another reason?  Sometimes a conversation can lead to creative thinking about how a tool can be unblocked for student learning.  Remember, too, there are so many new tools out there.  Some come and go quickly.  Others stay around a while.  If the tool you want is blocked, there might be a tool unblocked that will do the same thing.

The keys to technology is the Lifeline of Flexibility.  What do you do when the pencil breaks?  You get it sharpened or go find another one.  What do you do when technology doesn’t work quite the way you want?  You try something else or come back later.  We often think as teachers we have to know all the answers.  We need to be Flexible and know that it is ok to learn with our students as we explore and learn these new tools.

SAY ITHow will you “hook” your students?  What will be your venue for direct 

instruction?

There are so many possibilities using technology to hook students.  Consider the countless videos on YouTube that could be used to introduce a lesson.  Take this video promoting reading –Gotta Keep Reading – for example.  If YouTube is blocked in your school, consider TeacherTube as another source for videos.  Remember, too, to always preview the video entirely before using with students.

Beyond YouTube, there are lots of other video resources available out on the web.  TeachingBooks.net www.teachingbooks.net(available to Indiana residents as part of the INSPIRE databases) is full of great interviews with authors and illustrators.  www.inspire.in.gov

Another great place to look is the National Science Digital Library www.nsdl.org or you might try the Teacher’s Domain ‐www.teachersdomain.org.

Consider setting up a diigo account www.diigo.com.  Use that to organize all your online resources/links that support a particular students.  Encourage older students to add to it as you go through your unit.  This is a powerful tool that has MANY options for you to explore.

Skype is a great way to connect via audio/video live over the web.  For example, this year CLASS is offering coaching over the web.  This same type of model could bring an expert into your classroom.  Could you bring in a biologist when talking about animals?  Could you connect with an author? Check out Skype an author for ideas and costs skypeanauthor.wetpaint.com?  Maybe use this as a chance to connect with another teacher/classroom? (Might serve as a great beginning/middle/and end activity to connect via Skype with a class over an entire unit.).

Many of the structures in Play It could easily be adapted by using a technology tool.     

For example, consider using Wall Wisher www.wallwisher.com as part of clipboard cruising. Each student has to take a turn at the computer during the cruising to add a note to the wall.  Use a projector to post the website in the front of the room and watch the ideas grow!  

Wallwisher could also work great for chart chats.  If you have access to laptop computers, you could set each learning club up with a Wallwisher as a place to brainstorm ideas, post their reflections or thoughts, etc.  Wallwisher has a lot of potential uses within SPRW.

they are learning? 

Another structure you could use is dueling pencils.  Only let’s try it with dueling keyboards.  Open up a Word Document (or wiki site or blog) and allow students to use the keyboard to do the talking instead of their mouths.  

This could be the perfect place to use a wiki.  The cooperative structure is that as students learn more information about a topic, they post that information in the wiki.  Wikis are a collaborative environment, so  you can see who has added and edited the work.  This creation then grows because it moves you right through Relay It and Weigh It, too.  A good wiki site that offers free wikis to educators is Wikispaces ‐www.wikispaces.com.

The opportunities for collaboration and technology are abound in the Relay It. This is the sharing component where students can express what they’ve learned.  As we talk about 21st Century skills, this is where students are creating and sharing information based on what they learned in Say It and Play It.

Blogs, Wikis, and Podcasts are some of the major web 2.0 type tools students could use to share their work.   

Another idea is that students could add their PowerPoints to SlideShare www.slideshare.net.  This puts their presentations online for others to share and comment.

Remember that the learning doesn’t always have to include the written word.  What about creating a Flickr account www.flickr.com to save digital images that tell a story or convey a message.Just as we used videos as part of Say It as a hook, what about creating videos as part of the Relay It component.  They could be uploaded to www.teachertube.com to share with parents and the larger community.We know our kids know a lot about Facebook.  What about creating a page for a historical character?  An iconic moment or character from a novel would be interesting, too. Rather than create it on Facebook, set‐up a template for them to use in Word or PowerPoint.

WEIGH ITHow will you assess and evaluate 

students?

Of course, Weigh It is happening throughout the lesson and unit.   It isn’t something that just waits until the end.  

Consider a Twitter Take.  Have student create a tweet (140 characters or less) that summarizes a book, a chapter, a lesson, etc.   If Twitter is unblocked, students can post them online.  If it is blocked, students can always write them on paper.  Create a Twitter bulletin board in your room to post them!

All of the projects you have students create during Relay It make great assessment pieces.  Maybe they use tools such as VoiceThread www.voicethread.com or Prezi www.prezi.com to be unique in their sharing of their learning.

WEIGH ITHow will you assess and evaluate 

students?

One last thought about technology and assessment:  Technology is a tool.  It is a way to help teach the content – social studies, science, etc.  As you are using SPRW, you’ll know the right places to use technology because it will be a perfect fit to help teach your students what they need to know.  Technology isn’t an extra and it isn’t something we can avoid.  We want to embrace the opportunities that technology brings to education because for many students this might be the hook to develop them into lifelong learners.    Technology also gives us a good reminder that the process of learning, creating, and sharing is just as important as the final product, and the content is just as important as the technology bells and whistles.Happy planning and designing instruction for 21st Century learners with technology!  The possibilities are amazing!
