FULL OF GREENTHUSIASMDillewijn Zwapak makes a sustainable turnaround. No easy task. Sustainability Manager Martin Bijleveld explains.

A brief introduction: Martin Bijleveld (40) has been working as Sustainability Manager at Dillewijn Zwapak since 2019. After graduating in Civil Engineering and Management, he began his career as an engineer at NIBE and DGMR. After that, he worked as a sustainability manager at Stiho and Bouwcenter. Martin lives with his wife and two children in Utrecht.

What does sustainability mean for Dillewijn Zwapak?Martin: ‘Let me begin by referring to the company’s mission, which states that we do not only want to be innovative in developing packaging solutions, but at the same time we want to do that with respect for people and the planet. That demands quite a culture chan-ge within our company and for our customers, when you consider that we have already been packaging flowers in plastic for decades. Ad-mittedly, sleeves and films with the most beautiful designs, but made of a material that we now view with suspicion. We are inundated daily with reports and messages about plastic soup and global warming. Fortunately, we see a global mind shift, from politicians to busines-ses and citizens. Dillewijn Zwapak cannot, but above all does not want to shut its eyes to that.’

What do you do specifically to improve the environment?

E ven voorstellen. Martin Bijleveld (40) is sinds 2019 werkzaam als Sustainability

Manager bij Dillewijn Zwapak. Na zijn opleiding Civiele Techniek & Management begon hij zijn carrière als ingenieur bij NIBE en DGMR. Daarna was hij werkzaam als duurzaamheidsmanager bij Stiho en Bouwcenter. Martin woont met vrouw en 2 kinderen in Utrecht.

Wat betekent Sustainability voor Dillewijn Zwapak?Martin: “Laat ik om te beginnen verwijzen naar de bedrijfsmissie waarin wordt aangegeven dat wij niet alleen innovatief willen zijn in het ontwikkelen van verpakkings-oplossingen maar dat we dat tege-lijkertijd willen doen met respect voor mens en planeet.

Dat vergt best een cultuuromslag binnen ons bedrijf en bij onze klanten als je bedenkt dat we al decennia bloemen verpakken in plastic. Weliswaar hoezen en folies met de meest schitterende de-signs, maar wel gemaakt van een materiaal dat we tegenwoordig met argusogen bekijken. We wor-den dagelijks overspoeld met rap-porten en berichten over plastic soup en opwarming van de aarde. Gelukkig zien we een wereldwijde mindshift, van politici tot bedrijven en burgers. Daar kan, maar vooral wil, Dillewijn Zwapak de ogen niet voor sluiten.”

Wat doen jullie dan concreet voor een beter milieu?“Sinds 2018 is DZ gecertificeerd voor FSC® en PEFC®, dat betekent dat wij ons hardmaken voor het

gebruik van papier dat afkomstig is uit speciaal daarvoor aangeleg-de productiebossen. Al het papier dat wij gebruiken voor bijvoor-beeld promotiemateriaal en fac-turen is gedrukt op FSC® papier. Daar waar mogelijk zetten wij in op digitale communicatie. Zo ontvangt inmiddels 90% van onze klanten een factuur via de e-mail. En het DZ Magazine waar jij mij nu voor interviewt is gedrukt op FSC® papier en recyclebaar. Op het dak van ons kantoorpand liggen 2.500 zonnepanelen. Daarmee kunnen we het kantoor, het magazijn, de robots en lease auto’s laten draai-en en leveren we zelfs stroom terug aan het netwerk.”

Dat is een mooi begin, maar de planeet is wel wat groter dan jullie kantoorpand.“Zeker, daarom overleggen wij met klanten en leveranciers wat we samen kunnen verbeteren. Om te beginnen eisen wij van onze papierleveranciers dat zij zich laten certificeren voor FSC® of PEFC® als zij met ons zaken willen blijven doen. Nieuwe duurzame papiervarianten zoals bijvoor-beeld graspapier omarmen wij van harte en laten we graag in onze artikelen verwerken. Maar, en dat is natuurlijk wel essentieel, bloemen houden van water, maar

papier helaas niet. Dus bestude-ren we met onze leveranciers hoe papier op een milieuvriendelijke wijze waterafstotend gemaakt kan worden. En hoe het vervolgens dan weer recyclebaar is. Ik wil trouwens graag meegeven dat wanneer plastic afval op een juiste manier verzameld en gerecycled wordt, het juist een van de minder milieubelastende verpakkingsma-terialen is. Wij adviseren daarom onze klanten niet dat zij van de een op andere dag alle plastic hoezen moeten vervangen door papier. Zoveel FSC® bos is er op dit moment misschien niet eens. Maar wat natuurlijk wel goed kan is om hoezen en folies van dunner materiaal te maken. Dat scheelt al weer oliewinning en CO2 uitstoot gedurende het productieproces.

‘Since 2018, DZ is certified for FSC® and PEFC®, which means that we are making the case for using paper that comes from specially planted production forests. All the paper we use for example for promotional material and invoices is printed on FSC paper. Wherever possible, we use digital communi-cations. So now 90% of our custo-mers receive an invoice via email. And the DZ Magazine for which you are now interviewing me is printed on FSC paper and recyclable. The roof of our building has 2,500 solar panels. With those, we can run the office, the warehouse, the robots and lease cars and we can even supply power back to the grid’.

That’s a good start, but the planet is slightly larger than your office building.‘Certainly, that is why we are consul-ting with customers and suppliers on what we can improve together. First, we require our paper sup-pliers to obtain certification for FSC or PEFC if they want to continue doing business with us. We who-leheartedly embrace new sustai-nable paper variants, such as grass paper, and we are pleased to in-corporate them into our products. But, and this is of course essential, flowers like water, but unfortunately paper doesn’t. So together with our suppliers, we are studying how to make paper water repellent in an environmentally friendly manner. And how it is then subsequently recycled. By the way, I would like to tell you that when plastic waste is collected in the right way and is recycled, it is one of the less environmentally harmful packaging materials. We therefore advise our customers not to replace plastic

Klinkt als een scala aan mogelijkheden om te werken aan een beter milieu.“Klopt, de mogelijkheden zijn legio en de ideeën en uitvin-dingen nog lang niet uitgeput. Het mooie is dat de gehele branche graag haar steentje wil bijdragen. Of het nu gaat om gewasbestrijdings middelen of verpakkingsproducten, alle schakels in de keten zijn aan zet.”

That saves more oil production and CO2 emissions during the production process. We also inform customers about recycling opportunities and CO2 offset programmes. We sell 43 million buckets annually that are made from 100% recycled plastic, and if required, we collect them again after use to recycle them, that is circular processing for you’.

Sounds like there is a whole range of opportunities for wor-king on a better environment.‘That’s right, the possibilities are endless and the ideas and inventions are not exhausted by any means. The good thing is that the entire industry wants to make its contribution. Whether it is about crop protection products or packaging products, all links in the chain have to play their part’.

And how do you see your role in all this?‘I have been interested in sustai-nability since my studies. Then I already made sure that my shoes and bike lasted as long as possible. My motto was rather fix it than have a new one produced. But seriously, I can now influence policy, produc-tion and purchasing at a company that is fully committed to this tran-sition. I find the drive that Dillewijn Zwapak applies in policy and im-plementation unprecedented. That gives me a very good feeling’.

En hoe zie jij jouw rol in het geheel?“Ik ben sinds mijn studie al ge-interesseerd in duurzaamheid. Toen zorgde ik er al voor dat mijn schoenen en fiets zo lang moge-lijk meegingen. Liever fixen dan een nieuwe laten produceren was mijn motto. Maar zonder gekheid, nu kan ik invloed hebben op be-leid, productie en inkoop bij een bedrijf dat vol voor deze transitie gaat. Ik vind de drive waarmee Dillewijn Zwapak duurzaamheid in beleid en uitvoering toepast ongekend. Daar voel ik mij erg goed bij.”
