A WORD FROM THE GOVERNOR
Germaine Vonderhaar,
District Five Governor Welcome to the “Call to
Conference” edition of the
District Service Bulletin for
District Five. Although we
are experiencing cold
weather throughout
Michigan and Ohio we are preparing for our
Spring Conference which will be held in
Dayton, on April 28-30, 2017 when we will be
“Celebrating our Past, Energizing our Future”
100 Years of Altrusa.
The District Board Members and our
host for this year’s conference, the Members
of the Dayton Club, are very busy planning a
very special 100-year Birthday Celebration.
So, I invite all District Five Members, officers,
committee chairs, past Governors, Delegates
and Alternates to the 62nd District Five
Conference. Many hours are being spent in
preparing for this momentous occasion so
please mark your calendars for this weekend
in April.
Now, I am requesting each club to
plan a club activity on our Founders Day April
11th. Please think about doing a special
service project
in your
communities,
have a special
meeting with
the mayor or
official of your city or town whereby a proclamation
is given to your club on this day. Publish this picture
with officials and members of your club. Prepare a
Founders Day article to be included in your daily
newspaper. There are several press releases in the
Centennial Tool Kit located on the Altrusa website
that can be helpful in preparing an article for your
local newspapers. Another idea would be to plan a
special tea for members or a wine and cheese
event. Ask inactive members who would be
interested in sharing this 100-year celebration with
your club members. Deliver “goodies” to your local
firemen, police and other public officials to thank
them for their service and to have them join in on
our celebration. Post to your friends on social
media about the special day that you are
celebrating with your club members. At your
meetings in February and March please start to plan
a special event on April 11th which is the actual date
of Founders Day.
I would like to have Presidents send an email
to me on the activity that your club is doing for
Founders Day. Altrusa is truly an exceptional
organization where we have many talented
members who can organize an event for this special
day.
I would like to shout a big “thank you” to
members and clubs for stepping up and
volunteering for the Centennial Challenges. From
the reports I have received many members have
responded with a definite “Yes” to completing 100
hours of personal service through Altrusa projects
and fundraisers or through other community
services. Also for the Club Challenge to donate 100
books in your communities which we have received

very positive remarks from those who were
the recipients of these books. Another
challenge from the Centennial Committee to
have 100 new members to become Altrusans
by May 31, 2017. Although many Altrusans
have also accepted this challenge we are not
quite there yet. Keep in mind that we do
have a few months to accomplish this
challenge. I am very hopeful we can
accomplish this challenge as well.
Please mark your calendars for July
21—24, 2017 for our International
Convention which will be held at Sheraton
Music City Hotel, 777 McGavock Pike,
Nashville, TN. 37214.
Meet Our National Representative!!
Beverly Hardy has been an
Altrusan for 23 years,
holding several offices
with both her local Club
and District Board. She
served as Corresponding
Secretary (1996-1997),
Vice President of Membership (1997-1998),
Vice President of Programs (1998-1999),
President (1999-2000), and Club Treasurer
(2000-2005) with the Starke, Florida Club.
Beverly has also served as District Three
Financial Consultant/Committee Chair
(2003-2005), Treasurer (2005-2007), Vice
Governor (2007-2009), Governor-Elect (2009-
2011), and Governor (2011-2013). She
served as Chair of the District Nominating
Committee (2013-2015).
Beverly has formal education in
Special Education/Psychology, with a degree
from University of Central Florida located in
Orlando, FL. She has used her training
volunteering as a drug counselor for many
years, working with women at Place of Grace,
a faith based drug rehab program. She has
also served as a Board member and Finance
Chair of the ARC of Bradford County (citizens
with mental handicaps). She is a member of
the United Methodist Women, holding
positions of Circle Chair, Program Chair, and
Membership Chair. She is currently on the
State Board of Florida Ladies of the Elks serving as

Office, Beverly was co-owner of her family brick
business, with responsibilities including accounting
and taxes. She is also the Association Treasurer of
Seychelles at Crescent Beach Home Owners
Association. Beverly is married to Dudley Hardy an
attorney, and they have two daughters, one son and
four adorable grandchildren. She is an avid reader
and enjoys traveling with her husband and friends
whenever possible. However, her love for Altrusa
precedes all her other interests!
A Message from Bev to District Five! “We all become Altrusans for a variety of reasons,
but I suspect we all stay Altrusans because of what
it does for each of us individually. For me, it is a
wonderful organization that allows me to give back
to my community while providing me an avenue to
test my leadership abilities in a supportive culture.
It also has given me some of the best friendships I
will ever have in my lifetime. People that I share
incredible bonds with and would not know but for
Altrusa. However, we are a wonderful, almost
SECRET part in most of our communities.
“I believe it is essential that we as an
organization position and communicate a similar
message to all our members using our brand drivers
of clarity, flexibility and inclusion. Altrusans will
then have the consistency to recruit new members
by delivering a predictable message and experience
to the public.
“We, like all the other nonprofit
organizations, are facing a membership crisis. We
need to draw on the strengths of our rich historic
past, identify our strengths and weaknesses, and
join together to present a unified front. All
Altrusans represent the future of the New Altrusa!
We all must know what we are passionate about
and express it to our friends and members in our
communities. Yes, we do have a declining
membership, however, we did not come here to fear
the future but to shape it.”

librarian with the Akron Summit County
Public Library in 1997. The next ten years
were spent in literacy activities with children.
These included three years as Youth
Administrator at the Twinsburg Community
Center working with low-income children.
Seeing their difficulties in reading led to my
involvement in establishing Project: All
Reading Children, a nonprofit after-school
literacy program where I served as director,
grant writer and board president for seven
years.
Altrusa was such a wonderful fit for
me when Rebecca Ansley introduced me to
Altrusa in 1979. When I became an Altrusan,
the Altrusa Club of Akron had a generous
projects fund, was seeking ideas for a new
major project and welcomed my interest in
establishing a program to provide free
tutoring for English-speaking adults who
wanted to learn to read. Akron Altrusa’s
Project: Learn eventually led to the formation
of Project: Learn of Summit County.
My involvement in Akron Altrusa has
included serving as secretary, vice-president
and four terms as president. I currently serve
on the Board as past president and chair of
the Membership Committee. A very special
time for me was presiding at our 90th
Anniversary Celebration in 2015. Words
cannot express how Altrusa has enriched my
life and how much I cherish the warm
friendships I have known through the years.
I have been honored to serve as the
District Five Service Chair the past two years
and to see the wonderful work being done by
our clubs throughout the District.
A special interest for me now is taking
part in my community, I am active in my

SHOPPOPALOOZA! Submitted by Sharmon Lesnak, Youngstown
On Thursday, October 13, 2016 Altrusa of
Youngstown hosted their 8th annual
fundraiser – Shoppopalozza!
Let me give you a little background on
how it began…
To raise funds for our first “Plant the Seed to
Read” book fair, we started a luncheon
fundraiser in spring of 2007. It was held at
Carrabas restaurant where a lunch, fashion
show, and raffle took place. This project was
so successful that we soon added a fall
version in 2009 – a ladies luncheon and
shopping event we called Shoppopalooza!
This was the brainchild of two very
active Altrusans – Kathleen Austrino and Liz
McGarry. These ladies co-chair the Ways and
Means Committee and both are past
presidents of Altrusa of Youngstown. They
arranged for Michael Alberini’s restaurant to
provide the venue space and meal. Local
artists and vendors were provided a table to
showcase their goods. Our guests come early
to shop and buy.
A feature attraction is the wonderful
abundance of gift baskets for our raffle sales.
Ticket sales for this are extremely successful.
The attending vendors and our Altrusans are asked
to supply something for our raffle.
After time for shopping, lunch is served, followed by
a final call to purchase tickets before the raffle
begins. Gifts are taken to each winner. Our guests
can still make one more trip to vendor tables, too,
before they leave. Shoppopalooza has become a
multi-purpose event. We raise funds for our book
fair, get Altrusa’s name out into the community and
have become a membership drive all in one
It’s been said we run on a shoestring, well
maybe we do. With venue and food cost at a
minimum, there are fees for table space by vendors
and their donations to raffle table, sale of raffle
tickets, sale of luncheon tickets, and member
donation for raffle table – the event pays for itself.
Our only expense is a small portion of each meal,
printing invitations, labels, and stamps. Our
members pull together to make this event a
success. This year’s Shoppopalooza’s total profit
was $2,366.00 with an attendance of 115 guests
and 18 vendors.
So, come October, if you want to
enjoy an afternoon of lunch and
shopping, come join us!
Remember When? Submitted by Nancy Schwab
A Conference fee was established at the 1981
Conference, to be effective July 1, 1982. The fourth
Friday in October was established as the beginning
date of District Five Conference, effective 1985. This
change was approved by the International Board and
District Five.
In 1982 two new clubs were chartered -
Branch County, Michigan, and Clermont County,
Ohio. In 1984 the Ashtabula Club was disbanded.
At the 1985 Conference in Battle Creek,
Michigan, revised and updated District policies were
approved, and the delegates voted to add two
Directors to the District Board, effective with the
1986 election. The Altrusa Club of Queen City was
chartered in 1985, and the Cincinnati, Ohio, Club
was actively engaged in forming a new club in the
Covington, Kentucky, area for District Six. Another
ASTRA club, chartered by the Altrusa Club of
Bucyrus, Ohio, in December, 1985, became the
third ASTRA club in District Five.

Pam Jax, Altrusa of Columbus,
Featured in the Columbus Dispatch Submitted by Claudia Speakman, Member and
Treasurer of Altrusa of Columbus; written by Michael
Clark of the Cox Group
On December 20, 2016, the Columbus
Dispatch, Arts and Life Section, featured Pam
Jax, Altrusan with the Columbus, Ohio club.
Pam was recognized as a “very caring” retiree
who volunteers with kids at the Homework
Help Center in the Whitehall Branch of The
Columbus Metropolitan Library.
Pam has been volunteering at the
Homework Help Center for four years, since
she retired as a physical therapist. Pam also
volunteers at the Arthur G. James Cancer
Hospital and is co-chair, with her husband, of
their church missions’ committee.
Mrs. Jax has been working with
children at the Center since she joined the
Altrusa of Columbus club.
Altrusa supports several
groups in Columbus, with
an emphasis on literacy,
and serving others. The
article noted that Altrusa of
Columbus has helped the
Library’s homework
program since 2004. The club was recently
honored by the Library for donating more
than $30,000 to the centers over the years
and providing volunteers.
Kathy Shahbodaghi, director of the Whitehall
Center, said “Altrusa is such a lovely group of
individuals…. Not only do they give funds but
they show up with boxes of school
supplies…we have school supplies for any
student who wouldn’t be able to complete
their homework without them.”
The Center appreciates Mrs. Jax as she is
reliable and the kids love her. Mrs. Jax said
she helps wherever she is needed but is
much better helping with reading and writing
homework; more so than math!
100th
Anniversary!! Submitted by Karin Evans, District Five
Centennial Liaison
We have arrived! It is now 2017 and only a few
more months, it will be time to celebrate our 100th
Birthday. We would love to share in our next Altrusa
Chronicle some of the activities that clubs are
planning for April 11th as we celebrate Founders
Day. Please send a brief summary of your planned
activities to [email protected]
The Centennial Committee is also busy
planning for our 100th Birthday party which is being
held at Convention in Nashville in July. Hope you
are planning to come and join in with the fun and
festivities as we dance the night away. Have you
planned what you are going to wear for our
“Dancing through the Decades” party?
Unfortunately, we have had a poor response
from clubs concerning demand for the Centennial
Merchandise. This will mean several planned items
will not be produced. We will also now concentrate
our dissemination at District Conferences in
April/May as it looks like this will be the most
effective way to distribute products where we have
enough demand. A big thank you to those clubs
who took the time to complete our merchandise
survey. We will make sure your members do not
miss out on product.
We hope everyone is working away on their
service hours. To date, we have 2332 members
registered for the challenge. You still have until May
31 to get your hours completed. We will have a very
short time line for collecting the names of those
that successfully completed the challenge and we
cannot extend any deadlines. Please be sure to get
any additional names to your District Service Chair
soon, so members can be recognized for their
service.
Remember if you have any questions
regarding our centennial celebrations please email

Lest We Forget . . .
Altrusa International was founded in
Nashville, Tennessee in 1917, originally as
Altrusa Institute. During that time, a record
number of women were going to work during
World War I, and there was a need for
women’s civic organizations. Dr. Alfred
Durham, a member of Kiwanis, began
organizing clubs throughout Nashville, TN,
Louisville, KY, and Dayton, OH, before he
moved on to Indianapolis, IN, where he met
Mamie L. Bass. Mamie L. Bass had served as
the Superintendent of the Women’s Division
of the United States Employment Services,
and was a partner in her brother’s
architecture firm. She also assisted him in
organizing a Rotary chapter in Indianapolis.
While she admired Dr. Durham’s Institute,
Bass felt that Altrusa could serve a higher
purpose. In June 1918, when Altrusa held its
first convention in Indianapolis, Mamie L.
Bass’s vision became reality. The Altrusa
Institute became a classified service
organization for women.
Later, the Altrusa Institute was
renamed as the National Association of
Altrusa Clubs and adopted By-Laws that laid
the groundwork for today’s Altrusans. Soon
after, Mamie L. Bass created the Principles of
Altrusa[4] which defined Altrusa as "a builder
of women" and an organization based on
merit and accomplishment. The Principles
were officially adopted in 1921 along with a
major club building effort.
By 1922, Altrusa had 20
clubs.

consciously creating positive environments, driving
away stress and loneliness, and reaching out to
