WEEK 5 OF INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC PRODUCTION AT COURSERA.ORG
HI!
My name is Artur Shamsutdinov. This is lesson for 5th week of Introduction To Music Production at Coursera.org. Today I want to talk to you about dynamic range.
WHAT IS DYNAMIC RANGE?
Dynamic range, abbreviated DR or DNR, is the ratio between the largest and smallest values of a changeable quantity, such as in signals like sound and light.
DYNAMIC RANGE IN MUSIC
Different dynamic ranges are used for artificial purpose. They help you to make song more interesting, more acoustic, natural or electronic sound-like.
ACOUSTIC MUSIC
For example, classical and acoustic music uses large dynamic range.
ELECTRONIC MUSIC
But electronic music most of the time use small dynamic range.
HOW TO MANIPULATE DYNAMIC RANGE?
To manipulate dynamic range you can use dynamic type of effects such as compressor, limiter, expander, noise gate, deesser etc.
HOW TO MANIPULATE DYNAMIC RANGE?
Also, you can do it manually by cutting track on several parts and make loud parts lower and quite parts louder.
HOW TO MANIPULATE DYNAMIC RANGE?Another solution is on production or post-production stage you can use “riding fader” technique. When you change position of fader while recording or listening recorded track and using automation.
That’s all!
Thank you for slidingand enjoy your dynamic range!
