with ConocoPhillips, Kris Kallaway advises
global business units on the safe project
execution on all marine aspects of offshore
exploration, drilling and production. He is
also the focal point m afor arine ssurance
technical ingissues relat to offshore vessel
vetting, terminal clearance, DP Assurance,
and SIMOPS Source Control.
After working on drilling rigs in the US GOM, Brazil and Angola,
he moved onshore in 2007 holding senior positions with Wärtsilä
and GL-Noble Denton, and was Lead DP Advisor authoring the
SIMOPS (SWRP). Mr. Kallaway is aSubsea Well Response Project
member of numerous industry associations and has been an
actively licensed captain since 2004.

After coming ashore with BP he was
initially responsible for overseeing the
trials, verification and assurance of multiple types of DP vessels
and hydraulically compensated marine gangways before
assuming his current position.

Mark Webster is the Assistant Special
Agent-in-Charge (ASAC) of FBI
Houston Division's Cyber Special
Operations Branch, where he manages
the Cyber, Regional Computer Forensic

operations. He is a graduate of Sam
Houston University.
OPERATIONS – John Flynn, Stena Drilling
John Flynn started his offshore oil and gas
career as an officer cadet some 30 years
ago. He captained a variety of vessels in
the North Sea, Middle East, Asia, Africa
and Australia. After working as a Marine
Pilot, he became Offshore Assurance
Superintendent and SME for Dynamic
Positioning within BP, and later the
OCIMF representative on DP-TEG. He also audited offshore companies tendering for BP contracts. He joined Stena Drilling in 2014 and is the Marine Superintendent for a fleet of eight offshore drilling units, including three semis, four sixth-generation SHI drillships and a new DP3 semi currently under construction.

Chief of the Coast Guard's Outer
Continental Shelf National Center of
Expertise in Houma, Louisiana, the Coast
Guard's repository of expertise and best
practices associated with the Outer
Continental Shelf statutory mission. He
previous served as an engineer aboard a Coast Guard cutter, a
marine inspector in Texas, Hawaii, and Minnesota, and as a Naval
Architect at the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Center. Ben
graduated from the USCG Academy in 1998 and holds a Master's
Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
COMPETENCY/DESIGN – Erik Oberlin, Marathon Oil
Erik is Corporate Marine Superintendent
at Marathon Oil Corporation. He joined
the industry in 1997 after graduating from
Texas A&M Maritime Academy. He has
worked primarily on deepwater oil drilling
vessels for most of his career, working for
many years as a DPO, and completing his
offshore career as a Master/OIM. His
offshore career included working for major drilling contractors,
including GlobalMarine, Transocean, Seadrill and Noble Drilling.
He moved to shoreside work in 2014.

Nick has over 27 years of experience onshore and offshore

Sean Hogue, London Offshore Consultants
Captain Sean Hogue works in DP and Marine Assurance at London Offshore Consultants in Houston. Joining the
offshore industry in 2003, he has sailed on a variety of DP vessels, including pipe lay, construction, heavy lift, saturation
and air diving, semi-submersible, well intervention, ROV, AHTS, and PSV. He has served on the IDPOA committee
appointed to represent the voice of DPOs to the DP-Training Executive Group (DP-TEG). DP-TEG was launched by
the Nautical Institute to provide industry guidance and to represent stakeholder input into ynamic ositioningd p .
Today Captain Hogue’s primary focus includes the development of FMEAs and ASOGs, conducting annual DP trials
and incident investigations, and conducting suitability and mission critical equipment surveys.

Dimitris Chalkias studied Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens,
continuing as a researcher in ship hydrodynamics. He joined GustoMSC in 2010, where he is a Senior Naval Architect
in the vessel design department. He is the lead naval architect on several drillship design projects, including the
Magellan drillship. Previously he worked on various designs, including semi-submersibles and jack-ups. He has a
strong background in ship and offshore hydrodynamics, dynamic positioning, sea-keeping and hull form optimization.
Dimitris is a member of RINA (Royal Institute of Naval Architects) and an associate member of SNAME (Society of
Naval Architects and Marine Engineers).

Michael Potts, Ivo Beu, Schottel
PottsMichael is manager of the technical department in Wismar, the Schottel plant for offshore thrusters and special
constructions. His team designed the rudder propeller SRP 9000 LSU with the input power of 5,5 MW of which the
underwater mountable azimuth thrusters address the tough conditions offshore, reducing docking time. During the
past five years Potts completed a doctorate in mechanical engineering at the university of Dresden where his thesis on

Norbert is the head of the Hydrodynamics department at Wärtsilä Propulsion. For the past 20 years he has been
responsible for the development of all CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) activities relating to propulsion, as well
as the implementation of engineering processes. His current focus is on fuel efficient propeller designs, propeller-hull
flow interaction and development of a new steerable thruster portfolio.
Norbert studied Mechanical Engineering at Twente University in the Netherlands. After graduation in 1997 he joined
the R&D department of Lips Waterjets and subsequently undertook CFD simulations of waterjets, propellers and
thrusters. He received a Ph.D. on the from EindhovenNumerical Flow Simulations of a Waterjet Propulsion System

Jan-Erik is the Vice President for UNAV with Kongsberg Maritime and is responsible for the technical development of

the technical development of the acoustic positioning, acoustic link, and the software development of HPR systems.
He also worked on the installation and service of HPR systems worldwide and the installation and development of the
Maurice Platform acoustic positioning system. Jan-Erik holds a degree in Electronics and Automation Engineering.

Naveen Selvam is an Electrical and Computer Engineer with ABS. Rune is a Senior Key Expert with Siemens with 26 years of experience in offshore/maritime electrical engineering,
conceptual studies, R&D, commissioning and sea-trials. Before joining Siemens 16 years ago, he spent ten years with
Kvaerner Engineering.

Emanuele (Manny) La Bella, Trent Martin, Transocean
Emanuele is Sr. Lead, Controls Engineer – Corporate DP Superintendent with Transocean Offshore Deepwater
Drilling. For the past ten years he has assisted operating rigs with dynamic positioning and drilling control related
inquiries and helped analyze rig events. He supports project teams during system upgrades, conducts DP system
FMEA proving trials and reviews system specification for new builds. He contributed to the development and upkeep
of Transocean's DP Lessons Learned course. He also participates within subcommittees of the International
Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) and the Marine Technology Society (MTS) DP Committee.
Prior of joining Transocean Manny spent 20 years with the U.S. Navy as an Electronic Technician, before working for
several DP manufacturing companies, installing and commissioning DP/VMS/PMS systems, coordinating sea trials,
participating in numerous FMEA studies and providing technical training to maintenance personnel. Emanuele has a
B.Sc. in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a Master of Information Systems
from the University of Phoenix.

Aaron Smith, Ben Berson, OSVDPA
Aaron Smith is the Executive Director of the Offshore Service Vessel Dynamic Positioning Authority (OSVDPA). He is
responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Authority and also works with the Board of Directors and Technical
Advisory Council (TAC) in updating the Authority’s DPO certification program. Prior to joining the OSVDPA, Aaron
was Deputy Chief of Staff and Legislative Director for Congressman Jeff Landry (LA-03). In this role, he was
responsible for Congressman Landry’s maritime policy. Previous to that position, Aaron served in similar capacities
for three other Members of Congress.

Aleks Karlsen, Luca Pivano, Eivind Ruth, DNV GL
Aleks Karlsen joined DNV GL in 1999 and is currently DNV GL’s Principle Specialist on Dynamic Positioning Systems.
Working at DNV GL head office in Norway he is responsible for the company’s DP rules and standards. Prior to
joining DNV, he was the owner and skipper of a 95-foot trawler, fishing in the Norwegian and Barents Sea. Aleks holds
a B.Sc. degree in Control Systems and an M.Sc. in Electrical Systems from the Norwegian University of Science and
Technology. He was awarded the MTS DP Committee’s Distinguished Achievement Award in 2014.

Sofien Kerkani, D-ICE Engineering
Sofien Kerkeni is the founder and CEO of D-ICE Engineering (Design Innovation Control Expertise). The company is
a leader in dynamic positioning research in France providing high-level consultancy to the marine industry. Prior to
founding D-ICE, Sofien was the principal engineer of the DP system at DCNS Research/Sirehna. During his career he
has participated in over 50 sea trials, written more than ten papers on DP, and has significantly contributed to research
about DP in Ice.

3:30 PM To Be Or Not To Be - The Basis of Confidence
Yin Wu, Edward Bourgeau, Suman Muddusetti, Zhuxi Sun,Transocean, Shell, AKA
Yin Wu received her B.Sc. degree from Hohai University, China in 2003 and completed a Diploma of Engineering in
France. While pursuing a doctorate at the University of Texas, she joined Transocean’s Electrical Engineering group.
Yin advanced the company’s analytic and math modeling capabilities, applying these to innovations in power plants,
drilling systems and power plant risk management. In 2015, Yin received her Ph.D. in Energy Systems. She holds
patents in riser tension controls and motion compensation systems. She is currently a Professional Engineer in Texas,
and works as a senior electrical engineer with Transocean. Her research interests include offshore power generation
systems, including novel applications of hybrid power, improvement in the dynamics of offshore drilling processes and
riser system predictability.

Ivar Ihle, Frode Bloch, Jon Alme, Rolls-Royce Marine
Ivar Ande Ihle joined Rolls-Royce Marine as an engineer on the Poscon joystick and Icon DP systems in 2007. He has
been the industrial member of several Ph.D. committees, and is currently a part of the User Panel on Greener, Safer,
Smarter Marine Operations at the Center for Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems, one of the Norwegian
University of Science and Technology’s Centers of Excellence. Ivar graduated from Norwegian University of Science
and Technology Department of Engineering Cybernetics with a Master of Technology in 2003 and was awarded a
Ph.D. in 2006.

Stig Olav Settemsdal, Lars Barstad, Kennet Tjong, Siemens
Stig Olav joined Siemens Power Electronic Centre in Trondheim as Engineer/Project Manager after graduating with
an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Trondheim (NTNU) in 1995/6. He became Technical
Manager of Drilling Systems in 2006 in charge of the development of the BlueDrive drilling drives system. In 2010 he
became Product Lifecycle Manager with Siemens Oil & Gas and initiated the DP3 closed ring power plant
development. He was appointed Global Head of Drilling Solutions in September 2012. In 2014 he was appointed
Head of Technology for Drilling & Marine Technology and is currently Global Head of Portfolio Management &
Innovation Offshore for Siemen’s offshore production, drilling, & oil and gas vessels.

Kimmo Kokkila, ABB Marine
Kimmo holds an M.Sc. degree and is the Product Manager for compact-sized Azipod thrusters at ABB Marine and
Ports, Finland. He has worked with Azipod thrusters at ABB for over ten years. His previous positions with ABB
included sales manager positions for offshore vessels, contra-rotating propulsion concept development for container
ships and designing Azipod propulsion systems for high-ice class vessels. He played a leading role in the development
and production launch of the Becker Steerable Nozzle.
