Unit 1 On the Street 15

Page 16: Dynamic listening and speaking 2 student's book

A mericans often have short conversations, called small talk, with strangers whom they meet on the street. Such chats occur at bus stops, on buses, in elevators, while waiting in line — almost anywhere that strangers gather close together. These short verbal exchanges are a

way to say hi and express friendliness. They usually center on broad topics such as the weather, customer service, movies or TV shows, or a particular consumer product. Personal questions about money, family, religious beliefs or politics are off limits during these conversations. When making small talk, it’s best to ask open-ended questions. For example, if you ask visitors whether they like your city, they may say simply, “Yes.” But if you ask “What do you think of our city,” they will have more freedom in how they answer. This type of question also shows that you are interested in their opinion. Usually, if you appear to be interested in what people are saying, they feel more comfortable talking with you.

Americans end many conversations with the phrase “Have a nice day” or “Have a good day.” Store clerks, especially, say this to customers after purchases are made. Though at first it might sound insincere, studies have shown that it actually makes many people feel better. It gives people a sense that others care about them, rather than ignoring them. The American greeting “How are you” has a similar effect. Even though the questioner does not really care about the answer, simply asking the question often raises the other person’s spirits.

Unit 2 At Home 25

Page 26: Dynamic listening and speaking 2 student's book

M any people in other countries have a misunderstanding about American culture. They think that parents in the United States kick their children out of their house when the latter turn eighteen,

and will not let them live at home again. Like every stereotype, this is only partially true. While some parents insist that their children leave the nest at eighteen, most are saddened to see their offspring go. Moreover, it’s important to note that these young people rarely go grudgingly. The majority of eighteen-year-olds are eager to fly the coop. Eighteen is the age of legal adulthood in America, and these new adults are anxious to spread their wings and soar on their own.

Traditionally, students get their first taste of freedom on the university campus, their first step in becoming independent of their parents. Those who don’t go to college usually find jobs and move into apartments. In many cases, their parents help them along at first.

After graduation, students might return home for a short time. Usually their parents welcome them back. As soon as they find a job, however, they leave their parents behind again, this time for good. It is unusual in the United States for adults to live with their parents. Those who do, in fact, often have to endure teasing about it from friends and colleagues. It is considered weak, a mark of dependence, to be living with “Mommy and Daddy” once a person has reached adulthood and started his or her own career.

Discussion Questions

1. When do you think a person becomes an adult? Do other people in your class agree?

2. What does it mean to be an adult?

3. Is it unusual in your culture for grown children to live with their parents?

Page 36: Dynamic listening and speaking 2 student's book

Discussion Questions

1. Why do you think most American teachers are women?

2. What kinds of people become teachers in your country?

3. Does teaching deserve more respect than other professions?

4. What qualifications or characteristics should a good teacher have?

W ho is teaching American students? Are most American teachers men or women? What is the general educational level of these teachers? In the last few years, there has been much research into these and other questions. Now there is a fairly clear picture of the

people who teach in America’s schools. To begin with, 75% of all teachers in the United States are women. In addition, most American

teachers, both men and women, are in their forties, with an average age of forty-six. Out of all the races in American society, these teachers are most likely to be white. There is a somewhat disproportional number of minority teachers in comparison to their overall populations. For example, a survey found that 9% of US teachers were African American, though the population of African Americans is around 13%. Of course, America is a big place, so these teacher averages would vary depending on locations, and there are probably a variety of reasons why there aren’t more minority teachers.

The average American teacher has been teaching for fourteen years, which indicates that, generally speaking, most teachers see their job as a career, not just temporary work. This also suggests that teachers are largely happy with their profession. A recent study seems to confirm this, finding that two thirds said they enjoyed their jobs.

As might be expected, teachers on average are more educated than the general public, with sixteen years of formal education as opposed to thirteen for ordinary people. Another perception is that teachers in the US do not make much money. Though many people might protest that teachers are underpaid, the average income of American teachers comes to about $43,000 a year, which is close to the average for all people with bachelor’s degrees.

Discussion Questions

1. How common is it in your country to make reservations for restaurants?

2. Do you like to spend time enjoying a meal at a restaurant, or do you like to eat up and leave as soon as possible?

3. Can restaurants be romantic, or are they simply places to eat?

4. Are there kinds of food that taste better at restaurants than they are made at home?

I n the United States, if you want to go to a restaurant, you usually do not have to make a reservation. Most restaurants are rarely full, so it is perfectly acceptable to just go. If a restaurant is full when you arrive, you can simply wait a short time until a table

becomes available. At regular restaurants, the only times reservations are necessary are special occasions such as New Year’s Eve.

For certain kinds of restaurants, it is always necessary to make reservations. This can be for several reasons. Some restaurants may serve special or very sophisticated food that can only be prepared for a specified number of people or that takes longer than usual to prepare. This means that the number of people coming has to be known exactly. Some other restaurants are simply very popular. Since so many people want to go there, reservations are the only way to ensure that a table will be available. For some very popular or elite restaurants, reservations must sometimes be made more than a month in advance.

When making a reservation, you should say how many people are coming, specify the time, and provide a name. It is important to be on time for reservations. Being late or not coming at all can upset a restaurant’s

schedule, and other people who made reservations may be inconvenienced. Therefore, it is always good

practice to inform a restaurant if you are going to be late or have to cancel your reservation.

Discussion Questions

1. What are the three types of stores?

2. If you are on a tight budget, which stores would you patronize?

3. What are some differences between malls and flea markets?

4. What types of stores are there in your country? Which stores do you prefer to shop in?

T here are many different types of shops in the United States; they can be divided into three price ranges: inexpensive, middle, and expensive.

Inexpensive shops cater to the general public, and they include some store chains, thrift stores, and flea markets. Some store chains, such as Kmart, offer goods at low prices. Thrift stores, or second-hand shops, are generally cheaper than the store chains, but they have a much smaller selection of goods. Second-hand shops offer items that have been previously owned or used and are being resold. The prices in these stores may be negotiable, unlike in the store chains. Flea markets are a collection of independent vendors who sell their wares in a designated area. The vendors usually rent space in a warehouse or parking lot for a certain number of days or hours. The goods at flea markets may be new or used, and the prices are usually negotiable.

Middle-priced stores usually have higher quality goods, but they are also more expensive. Mid-range shopping centers include stores like Target and Fashion Bug. Shopping malls are a collection of stores, usually inside a certain building or enclosed area. Unlike the flea market, mall vendors are usually affiliated with a company, and they rent their space on a yearly contractual basis. Prices in malls are fixed.

Expensive stores are generally specialty stores. They are devoted to very high quality or unique products. Some shopping malls fall into the expensive price range as well. As with the malls, the prices in these stores are not negotiable, although the service and the quality of the goods are generally superior to those of other stores.

Whatever your goals or price range, you can probably find whatever you’re looking for if you ask around. You might end up having to drive for a while to get there, but that’s half the fun of shopping expeditions. Be sure to bring a friend!

Unit 6 At the Airport 65

Page 66: Dynamic listening and speaking 2 student's book

Discussion Questions

1. What is the busiest airport in your country? Why is it so busy?

2. Does your country use a hub system for its airports? Or can people fly non-stop between most of your cities?

3. What are some types of jobs that are needed at airports?

4. How can airports help generate money for a city and a country?

A tlanta is the 35th largest city in the United States. Its airport, however, is the busiest in the world. In a typical year, almost 85 million passengers will pass through the airport, and about 980,000 flights will take off and land. The airport is like a small city. It has more

than 200 shops and restaurants, and employs more than 55,000 people. There are 180 gates and six concourses. Passengers can travel between concourses on the world’s largest automatic people mover. This is like a moving sidewalk, on which people stand still while the sidewalk moves them along. The airport people mover carries more than 60 million passengers each year.

Physically, the Atlanta airport is the third largest in the world, occupying about six million square feet. Although the airport has many international flights, most of its business comes from people traveling within the United States. Delta Air Lines uses Atlanta as its main hub. This means that people flying to other American cities stop in Atlanta first. Then they transfer to connecting

flights. The Atlanta airport has more non-stop flights to more places than any other airline hub. From Atlanta, passengers

can fly non-stop to more than 240 different destinations, including 72 cities in 45 countries.

The Atlanta airport has five runways. It is one of only a few airports at which three planes can land at the same time. The airport generates more than $6 billion a year for the state of Georgia, and almost $20 billion a year for the southeast region of America.

Discussion Questions

1. How do people usually get to work in your city?

2. Which kinds of public transportation does your city have? Which do you like best?

3. What are some ways you can think of that would increase the use of public transportation and decrease the use of cars?

4. What did you learn about New York from the cultural reading?

B esides being the largest and most famous American city, New York bears another important distinction. It is the mass-transit capital of the United States. More people use public transportation in New York than in any other US city. In fact, more than half of all New

York households do not even own a car. Instead, they get around town via the subway, bus, taxi, commuter rail—and even an aerial tramway.

Most New Yorkers ride on some sort of railroad track. It is estimated that about two-thirds of all Americans who ride rails live in New York or its suburbs. The city boasts the world’s largest subway system, with more than 650 miles of tracks and twenty-six different subway lines. Each weekday, almost five million people commute to work on the subway, and residents rely on it so much that it operates all day and night. New York also has an extensive system of above-ground trains. These provide links to three major airports, the neighboring states of New Jersey and Connecticut, and other major cities along the East Coast of the United States. The train tracks converge at Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal, the two busiest train stations in the United States.

In addition to trains, New York has almost 6,000 buses, which carry about two million riders a day. The city has America’s largest number of clean air buses, which use fuels such as diesel and

natural gas. Some New Yorkers take a unique commute to work: they ride in a tram car high above the East River. With such a variety of public transportation

options available, it should come as no surprise that most New Yorkers don’t buy cars.

Discussion Questions

1. Where do most people stay when they visit the United States?

2. Where do many business people stay when they visit the United States?

3. What are some differences between motels and hotels?

4. Where would you rather stay? At a friend’s house, a hotel, or a motel? Why?

T here are many places to stay in the United States when traveling or sightseeing. Most people usually choose to stay with family or friends, since it is inexpensive and safer. However, if you don’t have any relations in the United States, there

are a few places where you can stay. The most common place to stay is a hotel. Hotels are very popular among business

travelers, since they are very pleasant and have excellent services. A hotel is usually housed in a very large, comfortable building with many guest rooms. You usually need a reservation to stay at a hotel. While there are several different kinds of hotels, most hotel rooms have at least one bed, a desk, a TV, and an adjoining private bathroom. Average hotel rooms tend to cost between $90 and $200 per night, depending on the type of room and the length of your stay. Hotels usually provide free toiletries in the room as well, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, a comb, soap, and shampoo. Stationery such as pencils, pens, and paper is commonly supplied, too. If you need anything else, you can always call the front desk and make a special request for it.

The other common place to stay is a motel. Motels are hotels for people who drive. (The word motel comes from “motor” and “hotel”.) Motels are smaller, cheaper versions of hotels, and you usually do not need a reservation to stay there. They are usually located along highways or other high traffic areas. The room rate for motels is about $50 per night. Motels do not usually provide many of the free toiletries and services found at the more expensive hotels.

Discussion Questions

1. Why do people go to expensive restaurants?

2. What type of information should you have in mind before you call the restaurant?

3. Why should you have an alternative schedule in mind?

4. Is it common in your country to make advance reservations? How many days should you call in advance?

A meal at an expensive restaurant is a popular and pleasant way to entertain guests, clients, or someone special. It shows people that you care about them, and that you are interested in their comfort and well-being. Many expensive restaurants require that you make reservations

in advance so that they can plan for your party. (“Party” here refers to a group of people. For example, you may hear the waiter say “party of two,” meaning there are two people for a table.)

When you call the restaurant, you should have a date and time in mind, and should call about one week in advance of the reservation date. You should also know how many people are coming to eat. If you are planning a gathering for a Friday or Saturday night, you may need to keep an alternative time or date in mind, just in case all the tables have already been reserved by other parties. It is also good to have an idea of which seating area you are looking for—smoking or non-smoking.

For example:Host Embassy Restaurant, how may I help you?Mary I would like to make a reservation for next Friday night at 7 p.m., party of two, non-smoking.Host I’m sorry, but we don’t have an opening until 9 p.m. Would you like to change it to 9 p.m.? I also have openings on that Saturday night at 7 p.m.Mary No, Friday at 9 p.m. is fine.Host Very good. Your last name, please?

Usually the host will repeat all the information you have given in order to confirm that it is correct.

Discussion Questions

1. Do you think it is good to pay for purchases by check?

2. How are checks used in your country? If your country does not have checks, do you think they would be a good idea for your country?

3. Which check payment system do you think is better, the one in the United States or that in England?

4. If you have a choice, would you pay by cash or by check?

C hecks are used all over the world in many different ways. In the United States,

many people have personal check books and pay for their groceries at shops and supermarkets by check. Sometimes shops encounter problems with these checks, when there isn’t enough money in the customer’s bank account and the check “bounces.” This means that the check is not accepted by the bank and is returned to the shop. The shops don’t get their money, so they wait a little while and then try again, hoping that this time there will be enough money in the account. Having checks bounced isn’t good for the customer who issued the check either; because each time the bank bounces the check, it will charge the customer a fine, which could mean a lot of money if the shop continues to submit the check for payment. The final outcome could be that the shop doesn’t get its money and the customer receives a lot of fines.

In England, shops are protected from bounced checks. Nearly everyone who has a personal check book also has a bank debit card that serves as a check guarantee card. This is the same card that you would use to pay for goods and services or withdraw money from the ATM. This card will guarantee a check up to a certain amount, and the bank will give the shop the money even if there isn’t any money in the customer’s bank account.

Discussion Questions

1. How are CVs written in your country?

2. What other information do you think should be added to a CV?

3. With this other information, how do you think someone’s chance of getting a job will increase?

4. If you have to write a CV for yourself, what would you put in it? Now consider it from the employer’s position. What would you look for?

C Vs and résumés are both the same. CV is short for “curriculum vitae,” which is Latin for “a timetable of life,” and résumé is French for a “summary.” Both refer to a document which will tell potential employers all about you and what you have done so far in your

life. The first part of the CV contains personal information such as your full name, date of birth,

nationality, and address. Some companies may require other personal details. Following this is the section which will show all your educational history, with details of your high school and university or college education. Potential employers will look at what you have studied because this will help them to decide whether or not you would be suitable for the position you are applying for.

Another very important section details your work experience, showing where you have worked in the past, what you did at those companies, and how long you were there. A lot of human resource managers like to know why you left your previous jobs because they want to see if you are the type of person who will stay at a company for a long time or if you are someone who moves around a lot.

It is very important that a CV is prepared on the computer and presented in a neat and clear format. You can guarantee not to get a job if you send a CV handwritten, because this will be seen as being highly unprofessional. A CV with too many errors might also cause it to be rejected. Finally, CVs should be brief because potential employers may have received hundreds of CVs and won’t have time to go through all of them, so keeping it brief will increase the chance that it is read.

Page 126: Dynamic listening and speaking 2 student's book

Discussion Questions

1. What types of medication can you get without a prescription in your country?

2. Is it easy to get prescription medication without having a prescription in your country?

3. Do you think pharmacies in your country should give more information about non-prescription medications when selling them?

4. Do you have to pay for the prescription in your country?

Prescription medications are drugs which can be bought at pharmacies but only with authorization from the doctor. This is because prescribed medicines are often potent and can be very dangerous for people who do not have the illness for which a drug is meant to treat.

Also, a doctor may prescribe a certain medicine instead of another medicine for treating the same illness because of the patient’s unique health concerns. For example, someone who takes another person’s prescribed medication could suffer a serious allergic reaction or some other undesirable side effect. Furthermore, some medicines are addictive, and requiring a prescription helps to limit their abuse.

In contrast, non-prescription medicine (or over-the-counter medicine) can be bought freely without a doctor’s authorization. However, these medications may not be as strong as those which are prescribed. They might give you temporary relief from the symptoms but not actually treat your illness. Another problem which often comes up with the use of non-prescription medications is that they can produce side effects such as drowsiness that you are not aware of. With prescribed medication, the doctor will always tell you what side effects you could experience, especially if they may affect your daily routine. This can be very important to know if your job involves a lot of driving or handling heavy machinery.

The United States is very strict about drug sale, and a pharmacy will never sell prescription medication if you do not have a valid prescription. If the doctor made a mistake writing one, the pharmacy will ask you to take it back to the doctor to have a new one written up. No exceptions are made!
