DYING
OCCUPATIONS
Fisherman: A fisherman is someone who captures
fish for profit or pleasure.
Discharger: Was the link between fishermen and
the factories. Carry the fish from the boats to the
factories.
Varina: Early morning preached the fish bought at
auction and roamed the city, selling fish door to
door, with her “canastra”.
Caulker – responsible for sealing the spaces between the boards of the ships with cotton to prevent water from leaking.
Orange Sweet vendors: Orange Sweet was a
typical sweet sold through the streets of Setúbal.
The sharpener wandered the streets with a harmonica advertising his services to customers. His work tool consisted in a large bicycle wheel rim, driven by a pedal, which was turning the belt and this, in turn, was to turn the stone. Thus it gave the nuisance of knives, scissors and other sharp objects.
Paperboy: This profession was started in Portugal
in 1864, with the creation of the journal “Diário de
Notícias”, under the British influence.
Shoeblack: the man responsible for polishing and cleaning shoes.

works in the footwear area.
Currently they work with many other accessories like
handbags, wallets, belts, etc.
