In Emerson Coleman’s first year coaching the girls’ soccer team, he lead them to a state title. In
his second year at the helm the team lost to Canton in the South Sectional finals.
There seems little doubt that his Lady Dragons will be back in the play-offs this year. How far they go could well depend on his team’s physical condition.
“If we stay healthy we have the po-tential to play with anyone in the state,” said Coleman, who returns 25 veterans along with two promising freshmen who have cracked the starting lineup.
While Coleman is blessed with plenty of experience in his lineup, he did suffer one major loss from his 2009 roster in two-time Boston Globe Player of The Year, Caitlin Burke, who was a major offensive force that drew plenty
of attention.Despite the loss Duxbury has plen-
ty of offense in captains Melissa Gavin and Emily Gallagher, along with fresh-man Emily Wiemer, who her coach de-scribes as a scorer and finisher.
Freshman Gabie Davis will start in Coleman’s midfield, along with a group that includes Katie Finocchiaro, Jesse Williams, Laura Nee, Sarah Jones and Lily Connolly.
While Duxbury appears loaded up front, it’s the Lady Dragon defense that could carry the team deep into the play-offs.
“We are very strong defensively,” said Coleman. “Getting Lauren Grady back is a big boost. She was the starting stopper the year we won the title and missed all of last year with an injury. Add Madi Lawson and Lily Peterson, along with Charlotte Cipolletti, Devan Bahr, and the return of Meghan Woom-er and we’ll have a defense that will
make scoring on goalie Emily Brook very difficult.”
“This defense is good enough that it should limit our opponents’ offen-sive opportunities and will always be capable of keeping us in games,” said Coleman.
An important element that has im-pressed the Duxbury coach the most is the team’s chemistry.
“This group of kids has incred-ible chemistry. When the game is over they don’t seem to be in any rush to get home. A couple of times they ordered pizza during a game and went under a tree to eat it together afterwards. It’s all about soccer with them,” said Cole-man.
While Duxbury looks like they will be a force on paper, Coleman is not rul-ing out Whitman-Hanson, Silver Lake, and Pembroke as teams that will give Duxbury a battle for the league crown.

FootballLast year’s record: 9-3
By Mike Halloran, SportS editor [email protected]
A Super Bowl win in 2008 and a playoff spot in 2009 has certainly established the
Duxbury Dragons as one of the premier football programs on the South Shore, if not in all of eastern Massachusetts.
After a disappointing loss to Marsh-field in the first round of last year’s Di-vision IIA playoffs that ended the season at 9-3, it appears Coach Dave Maimaron’s squad has wiped the loss from its memory and is intent on going all the way this year.
A veteran team, re-inforced with one of the most talented sophomore classes in the school’s histo-ry, will open its season with Bridgewater-Raynham next Friday night at 7 p.m. in Bridgewater.
The Trojans ap-pear to be one of the toughest teams on the Duxbury schedule, so Maimaron will get a very quick read on how good his team can be.
“This will be a very good test,” said Maimaron. “B-R returns some key players and it will be a good experience to see how our younger players react.”
While Duxbury returns starters and captains Kane Haffey, Dave Donovan, and Max Randall, they also have added 32 sophomores from last year’s domi-nating freshman team.
While most programs would sit their sophomores while they earn playing time, Maimaron has decided that they have the talent to make an impact right away and has moved several of them into the starting lineup.
Sophomores Rob Kosharek (guard / 6’5”-220 lbs.) and John Hurvitz (run-ning back / 5’9”-170 lbs.) will get the starting nod on offense, while Marshall McCarthy (linebacker / 5’11”-170 lbs.), Owen Grey (tackle / 5’10”-220 lbs.), and Mark Trudeau (tackle / 6’-225 lbs.) will see plenty of action on defense.
While talk of the sophomore infu-sion will be constant, the Dragons have plenty of solid veterans who will be counted on to carry the load in the early going.
Senior Colman Duggan (6’4/240) will line up at right guard next to senior captain Donovan (6’/200), while class-mate Brett Harasimowicz (6’4”/235) will start at left tackle and junior Don Webber (5’11’/180) will man the other tackle spot, while also sliding over to
tight end. Nick Mann (6’/240) is also in the battle for playing time, while Win-ston Schromm and Wes Dow are mov-ing to the offensive line to bolster its depth.
Maimaron is hoping that he can have a well-balanced offense with Haffey at QB and junior Matt O’Keefe as his
backup. O’Keefe looked like he had the starting job last year, but an injury forced him to the bench, allowing Haffey to emerge as the leader on offense. Now fully recovered, O’Keefe is capable of assuming
command should the need arise.
While both players are ca-pable of executing a passing game, Maimaron has yet to
see his receivers develop in training camp.
“I’m sure they’ll come around,” said Maimaron. “But right now they aren’t play-
ing with any con-sistency, nor are
they running the proper routs.”
The coach is confident it will happen when play begins, as se-niors Matt
Hallisey and Adam Martin have experi-ence from last year. Webber, sophomore Joe Guilfoyle, and surprising junior An-drew Padula have had good camps and are waiting in the wings should a change need to be made.
Junior Henry Buonagurio saw ac-tion last year in the backfield and could be the work-horse in the tough-yardage situations, while partner Hurvitz has the speed to make him a big-play threat.
If Maimaron has any concerns it could be on defense, where rotating his front four will be crucial, while his rookies get a taste of varsity play.
Joining Harasimowicz and Dug-gan on the defensive line will be Grey, Trudeau, Webber, sophomore Henry Narlee (5’9”/170), and senior Nick Mann (6’/240).
“Grey and Trudeau are big, strong kids,” said their coach. “They are very athletic and they will be very effec-tive if they stay low and get under their blocks.”
The area that really excites the coaching staff is the back seven with Randall manning the middle linebacker slot and four returnees in the secondary.
Randall is the first underclassman captain during Maimaron’s coaching tenure.
“Max is a team player and a special
kind of kid,” said his coach. “He’s an outstanding player who has a knack for the inside and playing in traffic. He makes good reads, is quick to the ball, and gets underneath his blocks.”
Junior Jay McDermott and Mc-Carthy will round out the starting linebacking corps.
“We are really excited about our secondary,” said Maimaron. “Riley Naton is like having a coach on the field, and James ‘The Assassin’ Burke has put on some weight and will only get better after having an outstanding season last year.”
Joining Naton and Burke in the
defensive backfield are Hallissey and Martin, with Padula, junior Brendon Gillis, and sophomore Joe Guilfoyle making strong bids for playing time in the preseason.
While there have been questions about how well the sophomores would blend with the veterans, there have been no incidents of swelled heads or debates about playing time.
“This has been one of the most cohesive groups of kids I have had here since I have been coaching,” said the Duxbury coach. “They com-pliment each other on good plays and help each other out when they want to do things better.”
While Duxbury’s Patriot League record will determine if it gets a play-off spot, the team’s first four games with BR, Plymouth North, New Bed-ford, and Taunton will determine if the Dragons will be good enough for another return to Gillette.
Gridiron gang locked and loaded for bear Coach Dave Maimaron expects big things from his Dragon football team under
the leadership of captains Kane Haffey, Dave Donovan and Max Randall.
Game MVP Matt Savard leaps for a TD pass during last year’s Turkey Day 17-7 win over Marshfield.
After a disappointing loss to Marshfield in the first round of last
year’s Division IIA playoffs that ended the season at 9-3, it appears Coach Dave Maimaron’s squad has wiped the loss from its memory and
is intent on going all the way.

Boys’ SoccerCoach: John Tocci. Captains: Eric Larsen
Mike Gabrielli and Brett SahlbergThe boys’ soccer team lost over a dozen seniors to graduation, but the head coach feels the team’s willingness to work together gives them an edge heading into the season.
Last year’s record: 14-2-5
By Mike Halloran, SportS editor [email protected]
Imagine that your team has been stripped of its players through graduation and you are forced
to field a team with players you have barely seen. How would you like to be in Coach John Tocci’s shoes?
The fourth-year Duxbury boys’ soc-cer coach found himself in that tough position when the preseason started. But thanks to the work of JV Coach Bill Wilhelm, Tocci took his player person-al opinions under advisement and has been able to put together a team he feels can be a solid competitor in the Patriot League.
Having lost 19 seniors from last year’s 14-2-5 team, it has been trial and error for Tocci as he went about put-ting together his starting lineup for last Saturday’s opener against Canton (loss 3-1).
Being without a high-scoring, go-to forward, Tocci has been emphasizing that success in 2010 will have to come through a team effort.
“We’ll play a 3-4-3 offense this year because it allows us to pressure the ball with extra forwards up front,” said Toc-ci.
Senior captains Eric Larsen and Brett Sahlberg, along with classmate Zach Gino seem to have won the battle for starting jobs up front.
“One of the strengths of this team is its willingness to work together. We don’t have that star player who can go one-on-one and get the big goal when we need it,” said Tocci. “They’ll have to feed off each other if they want to show their true talents.”
A center-midfielder usually controls the action and Tocci likes what he sees in junior Mitch Barrington.
“He’s a very tough kid and one of the most skilled players on our team,” says his coach, who is pairing him with junior Adam Fitzgerald, a blue-collar
type player who has been hard-working and steady in the middle of the field.
Juniors Cam Mullen and Fenton McCall will take care of the outside midfield for the Dragons where Tocci feels both players can use their speed and explosiveness to take on faster op-ponents.
The backfield will be filled by junior Ben Schroeder, senior captain Mike Ga-brielli, and junior Brendan North.
“Mike has really put in the time to become a better player,” Tocci said of his captain, and so has North.
“He was given the chance to show what he could do, and he earned his spot through hard work. It’s rare when an op-ponent can get by him.”
Duxbury’s last line of defense will be junior goalkeeper Justin Marino.
Well over 6’, he has good jumping ability and surprisingly good range ac-cording to Tocci. Marino will be backed up by junior Jon Gomer, who will also get a chance in net and an opportunity to show his coach what he can do on the field.
Tocci has some players coming off his bench that he is counting on for pro-ductive minutes.
Juniors Wilson Powell and Tim Gavin will be more than capable re-placements on the outside for the Drag-ons.
“Powell was a JV player last year, but he is putting up big minutes this year and has been the biggest surprise in camp so far,” said Tocci, “while Gavin has shown he has a dangerous left foot.”
Alec Kennelly is also expected to
Boys soccer gets a makeoversee action up front, while senior Kris Andren, a hard working defender, will see some action at fullback.
Other players who could see some playing time include: Max Cook up front, fullback Jason Marino, who has been moved outside, center DJ Bal-zotti at center fullback, sophomore Peter Murphy, junior Aiden Garrity up front, junior Chase Mohrman, and junior Andy Coonan.
“It’s going to be all about attack-ing.” said Tocci. “You saw the success we had in the first 40 minutes against Canton. We took it to them and hit the post, hit the goalie’s chest, and just kept coming at them. We just need to stay healthy and this strategy will work. If we suffer any injuries that force us to use just two forwards, we just don’t have the speed that would make that adjustment possible.”

Anyone involved in sports has noticed that concus-sions, and more importantly,
concussion awareness, have become a bigger part of the sports environment. As more and more people learn about the long-term problems associated with concussions, various groups involved in sports have begun to put mandatory
procedures in place to deal with them.
A concus-sion is a mild brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. Ap-proximately
60,000 concussions occur in high school sports annually. It is believed that many more go unreported.
The MIAA (Massachusetts Inter-scholastic Athletic Association), the ruling body of our high school sports program, recently added the following rule:
Any athlete who exhib-its signs, symptoms or behav-iors consistent with a concussion (such as loss of consciousness, head-ache, dizziness, confusion, or bal-ance problems) shall be immedi-ately removed from the contest and shall not return to play un-til cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.
School and athletic leaders are re-minded that football and ice hock-ey have rules regarding health care pro-fessionals.
Licensed EMTs must be present at all levels of football games and varsity ice hockey games.
Each school must de-fine the health care professional(s) and/or procedure(s) that must be satis-fied before an athlete is allowed to re-turn to participation. The in-dividuals and/ or procedures must be in place for all student ath-letes, sports and levels.
Connecticut’s state athletic associa-tion states it simpler: “When in doubt, sit it out”
The National Federation of High Schools now provides an online course: Concussion in Sports: What You Need to Know. This free course is available through the website: www.nfhslearn.com. Concussion in Sports provides a guide to understanding, recognizing and properly managing concussions in high school sports. The Centers for Disease Control has endorsed the course.
Our high school has been lucky enough to have a full-time trainer for over 15 years: Tim McPhillips. As our first line of defense, Tim has dealt with numerous injuries including concus-sions. Tim is also the first person to tell students and parents when they need to seek further medical help. Many school districts are without full-time trainers because of either budgetary issues or they cannot find anyone interested in the long hours. Tim’s service to our high
school athletic program goes unnoticed many times and it takes place behind the scenes. His work is the backbone of our athletic program. In the event of an in-jury, students and parents are reminded that Tim should be one of the first peo-ple to contact in order to provide a reha-bilitation plan.
Thanks to the Duxbury High School Athletic Boosters Club, our school has provided ImPACT baseline testing for almost two years for our students that participate in high risk sports. A base-line test is good for two years, so it is our hope to test student-athletes their freshman year and then again during their junior year. In the event of a con-cussion, these results are passed on to a student’s doctor. In most cases, a doctor will request a post test. The school is now able to perform post tests on stu-dent athletes at a small charge.
We do not make the baseline tests mandatory. Teams considered at risk are scheduled for testing in one of the school’s computer labs. In the event that a student cannot attend the testing date it is their responsibility to contact the athletic department to set up a new test date.
A recent Massachusetts law regard-ing concussions has been put on hold in an attempt to clear up the language and implementation of the plan. By the fall of 2011 at the latest, I believe it will become mandatory that all coaches and other personnel working with our stu-dent-athletes receive concussion educa-tion.
There are numerous available re-sources about the dangers of concus-sions and education tools. As more become available, we will post links on the DHS athletic department web page. The page is available by going through the school district’s home page, duxbury.k12.ma.us, and then click athletics.

Field HockeyCoach: Pam Manley. Captains: Brianna Connolly and Siobhan McCarthy
Last year’s record: 15-3-2
The girls’ field hockey team faces a stiff challenge in the tough Patriot League.
Injuries mar opening of field hockey seasonBy Mike Halloran, SportS editor
Entering her fourth year as the DHS varsity field hockey coach, Pam Manley figured
she had her routine down pat. But a couple of events happened that altered her game plan.
The birth of her first child, John Kelley Manley, during tryouts, and inju-ries to two starters in the opener against Marshfield has Manley making changes on the run. Thanks to the timely and able assistance of Assistant Coach Terry Vandewater, who conducted tryouts, Manley was able to pick her varsity squad that she feels is one of the tough-est in the Patriot League because of its experience and depth.
That depth is going to be tested ear-ly, as Cory Connolly (broken foot) and Kirsten Garvey (ACL/knee) went down in the opener and could be lost for the season, leaving two big holes that the coach feels can be filled.
Captains Brian Connolly and Siob-han McCarthy will lead the team that is coming off a 15-3-2 season in 2009 that saw them win the league title and fall in the second round of the playoffs to Hopkinton, who the Dragons will face
later this year.Last year Manley carried 24 players
with a large number of seniors, but has whittled her roster down to 21 this year, prior to her misfortunes in the opener.
Speed and a high skill level mark this year’s squad that has Grace Nissi as the leader up front at center forward and the speedy Molly Zaverucha on the left wing. Connolly was expected to make this a dangerous trio, but her injury now opens the door for Emily Munson, Sara Varano, and Emmy Horton to step up and fill those shoes.
The midfield has some of the best athletes on the team, and Manley hopes to use that athleticism to create a second offense line.
Briana Connolly, Martha Findley, and Hannah Murphy have all the stick skills needed to provide that offensive punch, as Manley will ease Chelsea Mi-chelson and Kara Falcone into the mid-field also, trying to make this part of her

lineup more offensive minded.McCarthy has been a stalwart on
defense for a couple of years.“She controls the center of the
field,” said Manley of her captain, who occasionally moves into the midfield.
Alongside her captain will be Keri Gould at left defense, an aggres-sive and fearless defensive flyer, who will be backed up by Kathryn Nutter, another defensive flyer who plays aggressively and isn’t afraid to take chances.
Caroline Phinney will also be back on defense and has a “killer” drive according to Manley, a positive skill to have when reversing the flow of play. Ali Hammel, the only fresh-man to make the team, will also see significant time in the backfield.
Anchoring the defense and rarely
coming off the field is Maggie Dunn.“She always comes up with the
ball and I rarely have to tell her to get in position. It just comes naturally for her,” says Manley.
With a solid and experienced de-fense, life for goalie Sophie Fitzpat-rick will be a lot easier.
After starting as a sophomore, Fitzpatrick seems to be a lot more comfortable this year with a season under her belt.
“Sophie did a lot of off-season camps and is getting a lot more comfy around the net,” said Manley. “She seems to be able to come of the net more with that newfound confi-dence.”
Other members of the team who will battle for playing time include Casey Reinhart, Olivia Rosenfeld, and Kylie White.
Keri Gould concen-trates on the play
during the girls’ open-ing match against Marshfield. While the Lady Dragons
emerged with a 4-1 victory, they also suf-fered some key inju-
ries that may make things difficult for
Coach Manley’s squad in the deep Patriot
League as the season wears on.

GolfHead Coach: Jack Stoddard
By Mike Halloran, SportS editor [email protected]
While the list of legiti-mate title contenders in fall sports includes just
about everyone, a betting man would call Coach Jack Stoddard’s boys’ golf team the best bet on the board when it comes to winning a state title.
The defending 2009 Division II state champs return a roster loaded with tournament experience and without just one member of last year’s winning team in Billy Curley, who transferred to Thayer Academy.
Led by senior captains Jonathan Stoddard, Stephan Krall, James Mag-ner, and Kevin Kuckuk, the Dragons sport a 16-man roster that could eas-ily be divided into two teams that could dominate most high school golf leagues.
“These kids have a ton of tourna-ment experience at the highest level, so I don’t think there are going to be many situations where we get behind and the pressure builds to the point of not al-lowing us get back into the action,”
said Stoddard. The team opened the season last
week with wins over Whitman-Hanson (219-244) and Division I Xaverian (235-245), but figures its two biggest challenges of the season will be when they take on BC High (Oct. 12) and Barnstable (Oct. 2).
“This team is stronger than last year, so you would assume we should win it again. But I was in this situation before and you never know how kids will react after coming off a title,” said the coach.
Stoddard is usually blessed with hard-working players who normally seek the toughest competition in the
summertime to improve their games. One of the top players in Massa-
chusetts happens to be Stoddard’s son, Jonathan, who is consistently one of the low scorers in team play and can be counted on to get the Dragons off and running in most matches, as he did last Wednesday in the win over Xaverian when paired with classmate Stephan Krall.
While Magner and Kuckuk went off as the No. 2 pairing against the Hawks, Kuckuk may ease his way into the top two spots after his round of 38 against Xaverian tied Stoddard for low honors.
Depth never seems to be an issue when it comes to the golf team, and it certainly won’t be this year, as 27 play-ers tried out, and 16 made the roster.
Four juniors made the squad and they include: Curtis Owens, Pat Gearin, Cam Daley, and Jeff Gaitta. Owens saw action last year and could move into the top six at anytime, while Gaitta missed the 2009 season with an injury and his working his way back into golfing shape.
Gearin has shown to be a steady player, while Daley has made great strides since last year.
“Cam has worked his butt off and is playing extremely well right now,” said Stoddard.
The reason Duxbury remains com-petitive every year is the fact that the talent level of the younger players is so good, Stoddard can carry them on his roster and allow them to play against some of the weaker teams on the sched-ule and still be competitive.

Nick Drago and Bobby O’Brien check out the position of the ball before taking a shot in early season action.
2010 GOLF CAPTAINS: Stephan Krall, Jonathan Stoddard, James Magner and Kevin Kuckuk.
Seven sophomores dot the roster and they include: Nick Drago, Bob-by O’Brien, Jack Ball, John Higgins, James Mattes, Joe McCarthy, and Zach Snelling.
Drago had an outstanding summer, winning a couple of tournaments that included a win over 17 and 18-year olds. He continued his outstanding play when he fired a 34 in the season-opening win over Whitman-Hanson
that included a pair of birdies and six pars to be the team’s low scorer.
Ball, McCarthy, and Higgins all made it through the team playoff with their hard work this summer obviously paying dividends.
Rarely does a year go by that Stod-dard doesn’t have a freshman on the team. This year the honor went to Jack Finnott.
“I had six freshmen try out and Jack was the survivor. He’s a very qui-et kid with decent size, and has contin-ued to work hard from the first day of tryouts,” said Stoddard.
It was one of the lowest turnouts in Stoddard’s reign, which the coach attributes to the wealth of talent return-ing from last year: a nice problem for any high school golf coach to have.
