ActL IVE WORTHILYSections from F or the Str en gth o f Y ou th I will study:

Learn Search Doctrine and Covenants121:41-45, and write down principlesthat govern the use of the priest-hood. Then do the following (askfor help from a parent or priesthoodleader if possible):

    1. Look for the definition of any unfamiliar words.

    "L et a ll th y t ho u g h ts bedi re c te d u n to th e Lo rd "(A lm a 37 :36 ).

Specificthings Iwill do to live these standards and help othersdo the same:

    2. Think ofexamples of how to apply these principles.Search verses 45 and 46, and identify the blessings that comefrom living these principles. Repeat steps 1 and 2 above foreach of these blessings. Study Doctrine and Covenants 63:16 and identify theconsequences of having unclean thoughts. Contrast thesewarnings with the blessings of letting "virtue garnish [your]thoughts unceasingly" (D&C 121:45).Choose at least foursections from Fo r th e Streng th of Youth to study; considerfocusing on the sections that will help you have virtuousthoughts. In particular, ponder what you can do to avoid thedangers described in Doctrine and Covenants 63:16.

Share Share with a parent or quorum leaderhow living these standards hasaffected you and influenced thosearound you. Asyou share, talk aboutthe kind ofperson you are becoming.

Youcanuse the scriptures (including the Topical Guide), True to theFai th , P re ach My Gospel, and the words of latter-day prophetsto learn about these topics.

For each topic you study, create a simple outline. It couldinclude: (1)a definition of the topic, (2) teachings and ex-amples from the scriptures and your own life, and (3)yourthoughts and feelings about why this topic is important. Priesthood Duties

The Lord has said that every priesthood holder should "learnhis duty" and "act ... in all diligence" (D&C 107:99). Thissection will help you learn and fulfill your duties as a teacher, which are outlined in Doctrine and Covenants 20:53-59; 84:111and which include all the duties of a deacon (see page 23). Yourduties can be organized into three groups:

    4 6

Administer Priesthood OrdinancesTeachers prepare and pass the sacrament. Serve Others. Teachers assist the bishop in "administering ... temporalthings" (D&C 107:68). This may include gathering fast offer-ings, caring for the poor and needy, caring for the meeting-house and grounds, serving as a messenger for the bishop inChurch meetings, and fulfilling other assignments from thequorum president.

Invite All to Come unto ChristTeachers are to "watch over the church always, and be withand strengthen them" (D&C20:53). One way to do this is byserving as a home teacher. Teachers also "see that there isno iniquity in the church, neither hardness with each other, neither lying, backbiting, nor evil speaking; and see that thechurch meet together often" (D&C20:54-55). This respon-sibility includes being a peacemaker, being an exampleof moral integrity and uprightness, and inviting others toattend church. They continue to "warn, expound, exhort, and teach, andinvite all to come unto Christ" (D&C 20:59). This includessetting a good example, fellowshipping quorum membersand others, speaking in Church meetings, sharing the gospel, and bearing testimony.

    ActADMINISTERPRIESTHOODORDINANCES

My plan to prepare the sacrament in a reverent and dignifiedmanner:

    Learn"He to ok o f t h e bre ada nd b ra ke a nd b le sse d it;a nd h e g ave un to thedi sc ip le s a nd c om -m an de d tha t th ey shouldeat" ( 3 N ep hi 18 :3) .

Read Doctrine and Covenants 38:42.The command "Beye clean that bearthe vessels of the Lord" has specialmeaning as you fulfill your duty toprepare the sacrament. Anciently agroup of priests carried vessels-bowls or basins-to be used in the temple (see Ezra 1:5-11).

Today you handle vessels that contain the sacramental breadand water in remembrance of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

My plan to set a good example for deacons when I am asked topass the sacrament:

Read Matthew 26:26-28. On the next page, write your an-swers to these questions:1. What can you do to prepare the sacrament in a reverentand dignified manner (even though most people will notsee you perform this duty)?

    2. How can you set a good example for the deacons whenyou are asked to pass the sacrament?

Share After following through with yourplan, discuss with members of yourquorum how your experiences haveinfluenced your feelings about thesacrament and the Savior.

    SERVE OTHERS

Learn Contrast Nephi's attitude with thatof Laman and Lemuel as they re-sponded to assignments (see 1 Nephi2:16-18; 3:1-7, 28-31; 4:1-2; 17:7-19,50-51; 18:1-4). In the space below, write several phrases from your study

that represent the attitude we should have when fulfillingresponsibilities. Consider sharing your list with members ofyour quorum.

    "L et h im g iv e; no tg rudging ly , ... fo r G odlo ve th a chee rfu l g ive r"( 2 C o r in th ia n s 9 :7 ).

Example: "Let us befaithful" (1 Nephi 4:1)

With your quorum, discuss opportunities you have to serveothers (ask your bishop or quorum leaders for ideas). Listsome specific things your quorum will do to give service. Also plan several things you will do on your own to giveservice, including service to members of your family.

My personal plan to give service:

Share Share with a parent, leader, or quorummembers some of your experiencesserving others. For example, youcould talk about how your service hasaffected the people you have servedand how your attitude has affectedyour experiences. You could alsotalk about how these experiences arehelping you serve Jesus Christ (seeMatthew 25:35-40) and become morelike Him.

INVITE ALL TO COMEUNTO CHRISTLearn Read Doctrine and Covenants 20:53.As part of your duty to "watch overthe church always, and be with andstrengthen them," you will now havethe opportunity to serve as a hometeacher. Discuss with your quorumpresident, your parents, or your hometeaching companion what you could

do to become a good home teacher .

    "T he y h ad g iv enthem selves to m uchpr ayer , and f as ti ng; .an d when the y t au g ht,the y ta u ght w ith p ow era nd a uth or ity o f G od "(A lm a 1 7:3 ).

Read Alma 17:2-3,9, and write what the sons of Mosiah didto prepare themselves for missionary service. Consider waysyou can follow their example.

Continue your efforts to share the gospel. Think aboutfamily members and friends whom you could invite to comeunto Christ. Write their names and what you will do to helpthem (such as inviting them to a Church activity or givingthem a copy of the Book of Mormon or a Church magazine).

STEP 2: CREATE A PROJECTCreate a project that will help you apply what you havelearned about gaining an education. It should include twoparts: (1)plans to gain an education and (2)plans to explore fu-ture occupation options. Have a parent or leader approve yourproject before you begin working on it. Here are some exam-ples ofthings you could include in each part of your project:

Examples-Education Make a list of things you do well in school. Then make a listof things you could do to be more successful in school. Dothose things, and note the difference it makes in your perfor-mance, your attitude about school, and so on.

    56

Make a plan togain an education or training. Considerincluding in your plan what schools you would like to attendor training you'd like to receive. Also include what you haveto do to be admitted to your school or training program andwhat options exist to finance this education. Pick a topic you're interested in that you aren't learning inschool, and research that topic independently. Share whatyou learn in a presentation or a written paper.
