The World Before Her Film ScreeningWinner of the award for Best Documentary Film in the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, The World Before Her is a movie about the culture that surrounds the Miss India beauty pageant and a girls’ militant Hindu fundamentalist camp. Both shine a light on the complicated and complex role of women in modern-day India and the ties that bind them.

Sponsored by the Hindu Student Union, with support by the Abbot Academy Association, a screening of this groundbreaking film will be held on Sunday, December 8, at 1 p.m. in Kemper Auditorium. Hot popcorn and candy bar treats (movie theater style) will be served.

All are welcome!

Farewell Reception for Gail WozniakOn December 12, Gail Wozniak, assistant director of Alumni Engagement–Reunions & Events, will retire after having com-pleted 15 years of distinguished service to OAR and the Acad-emy. During these years, Gail has helped strengthen Academy relationships with countless alumni, parents, and friends.

Gail came to Andover in 1998 from Phillips Exeter Academy to manage events associated with Campaign Andover—the first of our two major campaigns—which ended in 2002. She then took on the important work of reunion planning, in which she helped hundreds of class leaders customize their Reunion Weekend activities and events. In fact, a number of these leaders have cel-ebrated two and possibly three different reunions thanks to the thoughtful and professional guidance provided by Gail.

Folks across campus know and admire Gail for her collaborative and selfless manner. The community is invited to a reception for Gail on Thursday, December 12, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the McKeen Rooms of Draper Hall.

From the OWHL

Details on Recent LAMs WorkshopIn order to further our collective goal of exploring with fac-ulty the ways in which the rich material held by the museums, archives, library, and map collection on campus can support curricula across subject areas, representatives from the Addison Gallery, Archives and Special Collections, the Knafel Map Col-lection, the OWHL, and the Peabody Museum recently hosted new faculty for an evening workshop on the LAMs (Libraries, Archives, and Museums). Faculty cycled through mini work-shops designed to illuminate connections between each institu-tion’s collections and PA course content in an effort to inspire interdisciplinary lesson ideas for using object-based teaching and learning to build students’ critical thinking and visual literacy skills.

From the OWHL:The OWHL opened the evening with an introduction to the wealth of resources and services we offer. We have seven instruc-tional librarians—each with specific liaison areas to academic departments on campus—who offer library and research instruc-tion to improve students’ information literacy and hone their research skills. Also, not only do we subscribe to more than 80 databases and electronic resources, but because we are part of the NOBLE network we have access to more than 3 millions items from 17 public libraries and 10 college and university libraries.

The OWHL also created a LAMs-focused OWHL Guide to act as a permanent resource for faculty looking for curriculum support. Each LAMs member has a tab in the guide that describes the types of resources available, how to get in touch, curriculum con-nections, and collaborative opportunities. Please check out the LAMs OWHL Guide at http://owhlguides.andover.edu/LAMs.

From the Knafel Map Collection:New faculty explored a handful of reproduction maps as well as some digital images from the Knafel Map Collection, and discussed the ways in which the visual languages used in mapping not only convey information about past and present knowledge of the world, but also indicate cultural, political, and social values. Faculty brainstormed possibilities of including map activities in the classroom and the ways in which this could sup-port their curriculum.

From the Peabody Museum:Using the Peabody Museum’s archaeological collections, faculty members examined two objects: a stone celt and a metal celt (a celt is similar to a chisel and is a woodworking tool). Discussion of these objects arose from direct observation skills: How were the objects made? Would it have been easy to make them? What do they reveal about their owners’ social status? By asking a series of follow-up questions about the celts (e.g.: Where would

Native Americans have acquired metal?), we moved through the long and complicated story of the fur trade in New England. History 200 classes use this activity to explore the relationships of commodities in the Americas. Similar observational examinations of the Peabody’s collections can yield multiple narratives and can apply to a variety of subjects, including math, science, history, and social sciences.

From Archives and Special Collections:The mini workshop focused on introducing new faculty to Archives and Special Collections in general, with examples of how collections have been used in history classes. For instance, History 200 classes have come to use the rare 1661 Eliot Bible to explore issues of cultural contact, religious conversion, and literacy, as well as the history of printing. Also, Emma Frey, instructor in history and social science, has offered an extra-credit assignment to History 300 students requiring that they analyze a scrapbook from the Archives and write a description of its cre-ator, content (including format of ephemera), condition, and time period for the Archives website, to enhance access to collections for future researchers. We are eager to integrate collections into courses across the curriculum in ways that reinforce the skills taught at the OWHL, Addison, Peabody, and with Knafel Maps.

From the Addison:During the Addison’s mini workshop, faculty explored copies of works from the museum collection from a variety of time periods and in a variety of mediums. We discussed the ways in which each image might be “read,” using visual evidence to support analysis, stories the images might tell about place and identity, and various course topics and themes that individual images might support. Faculty attendees then were tasked with selecting, grouping, rearranging, and recontextualizing images, curating narratives and sequences that speak to content from their courses. Each image was placed in a variety of contexts, each time altering its narrative and therefore its potential impact. These types of curatorial assignments, either using Addison works in the Museum Learning Center or using JPEGs from the museum’s online database, invite students to think critically about intentions behind information that they are presented with in the world around them and how those narratives are created.

Upcoming:The Phillips Academy LAMs collaborative is busy developing additional and more in-depth examinations of these modes and methods of teaching and learning with objects. Watch this space for an announcement of the Teaching with Objects workshop.
