History of PhotolithographyLithography (v. old Greek.: λίθος lithos, „Stone“ and γράφειν graphein,
„write“)
1826 “Heliography” (Sun Writing) invented by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce
Lightsensitive bitumen on glass or metal plates
Photography1826 Niépce makes a first copper etch of Cardinal d’AmboiseFirst application. Structure transfer via Camera Obscura,
illumination and etchingResolution 0.5 – 1 mm !!!
1839 Daguerre, further development of Photography, Silver coated copper plates, unique copies!
At the same time Talbot, Wedgwood and others work with lightsensitive silver salts on paper and leather. Photogenetic drawings, negativpositive. Reproduction.
1855 Abel Niepce and Lemaître develop Heliagravures.
100 Years later first circuits are transferred into copper and etched

There is Plenty of Room at the BottomRichard Feynman, 1959
As soon as I mention this, people tell me about miniaturization, and how far it has progressed today. They tell me about electric motors that are the size of the nail on your small finger. And there is a device on the market, they tell me, by which you can write the Lord's Prayer on the head of a pin. But that's nothing; that's the most primitive, halting step in the direction I intend to discuss. It is a staggeringly small world that is below. In the year 2000, when they look back at this age, they will wonder why it was not until the year 1960 that anybody began seriously to move in this direction.
