AWSUM Celebrity Interview

AWSUM News caught up with sensational YouTube comedy wondergirl, Suzelle DIY, who has just landed her very own slot on Comedy Central –

not bad for a poppie with a hectic wannabe accent and an ever-silent best friend! Suzelle DIY’s YouTube channel has more than 48 000 subscribers

and picks up 40 000 views on the day a new episode launches.)

Q: Congratulations on the latest feather in your cap – your very own slot on Comedy Central. How does it feel to play in the big league now? A: I feel like a million rands. It has been a dream

come true to watch myself on TV. Q: Who is Suzelle really? Tell us a bit more about yourself – likes, dislikes, favourite movie, favourite song, favourite book.

A: I’m just a small town girl with a passion for DIY, braai-ing and

dinner parties. My movie of the moment is the How To Be Single, my favourite book is How to do Just about Everything by The Reader’s Digest. Q: Why do you think you are so

popular? What is your secret to success?A: I think people like that the DIY in my videos is useful and that sometimes things go wrong. My

secret is to keep going no matter what happens! Q: What are your top five DIY tips for women

like yourself who like to be glamorous and never get their hands dirty while doing the dirty workA: Right this is a good one. It’s important to always look your best no matter what you are busy doing.

1. Wear an apron when you are in the kitchen.2. Use safety goggles when you chop onions to stop your eyes from tearing up and smudging your make up.3. Run your nails over a bar of soap before you do the gardening. It will keep the dirt from getting under your nails.4. Buy a box of disposable gloves. They are great to use for any DIY project.5. I like to cut up plastic packets and lay them down on my work surface to prevent any mess escaping Q: What do you do for fun and relaxation in your leisure time? I like to go for a coffee with my best friend, Marianne. I like to watch cooking shows and look for DIY ideas on the Google. Q: Other celebrities, across a spectrum, like Nataniel, Hellen Zille, Tim Noakes and Jan-Hendrik, want to be associated with you. Why is that? What do they gain? What do you gain? A: I think they are just excited to meet me because they want to soak up some of my creativity.

Roll up, roll up!!

Ingredients• Olive oil• 200g button mushrooms sliced• 2 cloves garlic, crushed• 2 Tbsp. Wellington’s sweet chilli sauce• 1 cup chopped spinach, wilted• 250ml ricotta• 3 tbsp chopped peppadews• ¾ c Cheddar cheese• 1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary• Salt and freshly ground pepper• 1 x 400g Todays puff pastry• 1 egg beaten

Method• Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the

mushrooms until lightly browned, stir in the garlic and sweet chilli sauce, season with salt

and pepper and cook for a further 3 minutes until all the moisture has cooked off the mushrooms.

• Allow cooling, and then mixing with the remaining filling ingredients, except the spinach.

• Roll out the pastry until 2mm thick place the mushroom mixture onto the centre of the pastry and shape into a sausage shape, top with the spinach and then fold the pastry over the filling to make a parcel. Brush with beaten egg.

• Lift onto a baking sheet lined with baking paper, this makes it easier to lift off the sheet when cooked.

• Bake in a pre-heated 200 deg C oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden and crisp.

• Serve with large mixed salad

I always have a roll or two of frozen pastry in my freezer, you should too, it comes in handy if I want to make a tart or pie at the drop of a hat. I love little jam tarts and when the craving hits me, I make my way to the freezer and pull out a roll of shop bought frozen pastry, wait for it to thaw, roll it out, cut out little rounds and pop them into the hollows of a muffin

tin, place a little butter in the base, sprinkle with desiccated coconut and a spoonful of

any jam that takes my fancy , pop it into a hot oven, put the kettle on and before you know it I’m munching on jam tarts and sipping tea. The other thing I like to do with a sheet of

pastry is fill it and make a roulade. A roulade is a dish of filled rolled meat or pastry, the

term roulade originates from the French word "rouler", meaning "to roll". Now what I like about having a sheet of pastry handy is that you can fill it with a million different things

and call them, tarts pies and roulades, you can make any of these from scratch or use up left-

overs from the night before to make a pie.

Ilse SoutheyIlse is in Grade 6 this year and is very capable academically. She is a kind and helpful learner with always a very wide smile on her face.

She started swimming at the age of 3 years old and is still a water baby. She made the Schools A team in swimming in Grades 4, 5 and now in Grade 6 too. Ilse competed in the Mini Olympics at Kingspark in 2016 and won third place in the 50 metre freestyle and 3rd place in backstroke.

Ilse is also a fine hockey player and made the A team hockey side in Grade 4, Grade 5 and again in Grade 6. She has been invited to play at the Pinetown and District trials coming up soon. Her position is goalie.

We would like to congratulate Ilse on her achievements.

Westville Senior Primary School Star of the Month

Young tennis starGuy Vorwerk, a Grade 4 pupil at Winston Park Primary School, has had a passion for tennis since he was just a toddler. When he was little, his mom would often take him to the tennis courts where his dad was coaching. He was mesmerised by the game and couldn’t seem to get enough of it. Guy participated in his first U10 Nationals in Bloemfontein at the age of 7 and won a few matches against the older boys.

During the recent Easter Holidays, Guy participated in two tournaments, the Free State TSA (Tennis South Africa) Series and the TSA Junior Nationals. Both events were held in Bloemfontein, with players from the whole of South Africa taking part. He won the U10 Boys singles boys doubles and mixed doubles in the Free State TSA series and he also won the U10 mixed doubles and was a finalist in the U10 boys singles and doubles at the Junior Nationals.

While we are very proud of Guy’s tennis achievements, we are even more proud of Guy’s integrity and his positive attitude on court and towards other players!

Morningside goes for colourIt was recently decided to add a little colour to the red facebrick and dull white of our school and with this in mind a project was undertaken. A drab whitewashed wall facing the eastern gate of the school was chosen for a facelift of colourful proportions.

Mrs Carol Terblanche and her husband, Mr Ruben Terblanche, spent a weekend designing and painting a mural that now adorns this wall. It shows the core values that define the school. They are ubuntu, honesty, respect, tolerance and responsibility. Each of these values is given priority over a period of time during the year where the values are encouraged and hopefully entrenched.

We at Morningside Primary thank Mr and Mrs Terblanche, as well as the thousands of other adults, who give up their time to selflessly help schools across the country. Without their help, the running and maintaining of schools would be a far greater trial than it is.

It is hard to believe that the 2016 National Girls’ Schools’ Festival is over. A festival full of talent, sisterhood and sharing of ideas. We trust that the visiting schools

from around South Africa left the shores of Durban having made new friends, possibly acquired a few more skills and experienced a little bit of our local flavours.

Congratulations to all the Durban Girls’ High School participants who made us so proud. #NGSF2016

Asian Fusion was the theme chosen by the Grade 11s for this year’s Matric Dance.

The creative vision for the interpretation of this theme was inspired by the tranquil atmosphere of a Cherry Blossom Garden.

The Hall was draped in white and festooned with paper lanterns, Chinese parasols and fairy lights.

The tables were beautifully decorated with vases of cherry blossom, twigs, Japanese Ikebana style floral arrangements and pure white orchids in their perfect simplicity. Each place setting was adorned with a mint green napkin meticulously folded in the lotus flower style.

The stage served as the dance floor draped in black

with twinkling starlights to represent the night sky in a bamboo forest, complete with a full moon!

The atmosphere was elegant and feminine and provided a serene backdrop to show case the incredible ball gowns worn by the 95 Matric girls, who had the time of their lives “Dancing in the Moonlight” until midnight!

Northlands’ art pupil placed 3rd in local talent competitionNorthlands Girls’ High School’s Grade 10 Art pupil Liliya Panina was placed 3rd in the ‘Dante Talent Show Gala Evening’ held at the Italian Club on 23 April. Liliya competed against musicians - including Northlands’ ‘Old Girl’ pianist Casey Chiang - singers, dancers and other artists, and won the award for her oil painting entitled ‘Twisted Inferno’. Her darkest painting yet, Liliya hasn’t decided what she’ll spend her winnings on, but does plan to buy herself a new laptop soon. Congratulations, Liliya!

World Book Day honoured at NGHSIn true Northlands Girls’ High School fashion, and to acknowledge World Book Day (23 April), the annual Book Fair took place at the School. Pupils dressed up as their favourite book characters to honour authors for creating such fantastic stories for us. In fact, even the Principal, Mr Graaf couldn’t resist participating when he dressed up as Professor Severus Snape, the infamous teacher in the popular Harry Potter series. Loads of pupils attended the show and entered the competition to guess the characters on ‘display’. The competition winner as to who guessed all correctly will be announced this month.

Social media: the dos and don’tsNorthlands Girls’ High School were fortunate enough recently to receive a very informative and interesting talk about social media law from Lizzie Harrison, well-known South African media law consultant and speaker Emma Sadleir’s right-hand lady.

Using real cases as examples, Harrison explained how social media law works, its consequences and potential impact. She also shared tips on what to do and what not to do on social media platforms. Her best tipIf you wouldn’t want what you wrote on social media to appear on a billboard along a busy highway, don’t write it!

Winner of Sanix Rugby Youth World CupGlenwood High School has won the prestigious international rugby union tournament, The Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational Tournament in Japan. Glenwood took on Higashi Fukuoka High School from Japan, beating them 45–6.

In 2008 Glenwood was chosen by SARU to represent South Africa at the prestigious SANIX World Youth Championships in Japan. Glenwood managed to win this tournament, beating the champions of England, New Zealand and France along the way. Glenwood was invited back in 2009 and, although they did not win the tournament, they had the satisfaction of beating the New Zealand champions, De La Salle College from Auckland 37–10 in the third-place playoff.

Glenwood has won this prominent tournament for a second time, being part of an elite group of schools such as Hamilton Boys High School (NZ) who won this tournament in 2014, 2011 and 2010, Christchurch Boys (NZ) who won in 2006, 2005

and Rotorua Boys’ High (NZ) in 2014 and 2003. Glenwood is the only South African school that has won this tournament twice.

Thirty Glenwood schoolboy rugby players and six staff members travelled to the Global Arena in Fukuoka in Japan on 24 April.
