Program Notes:

For many years, one of the musical highlights for band and orchestra students at my

school was an annual excursion to see “DOCH Gypsy Orchestra” directed by my

colleague and friend, Nick Lavers. After the event, the bus ride back to school and the

days that followed were always full of excitement for this style of music in which most of

the students had very little experience. Like any a Music teacher, I was keen to make the

most of this newfound enthusiasm. That is how Gypsies came about.

The piece incorporates part of an eastern European folk song called “Ushti Ushti Baba”

which is traditionally used during wedding celebrations. I have attempted to recreate the

sense of spontaneity, celebration and intense emotion that is so appealing in this style.

Rehearsal Notes:

The introductory section suggests improvisation and, as such, there is room for a degree

of rhythmic freedom granted to each of the solo entries. As each solo entry commences it

should be the prominent sound of the moment.

Tempo variations are frequent and dramatic. They are intrinsically linked to the timbral

contrast between ensemble and soloists as well as the mood changes between dance-like

group celebration and individual musical statements. From [102], the soloists in the

cadenza sections should be granted complete freedom of time. Take care to ensure the

moderato tempo that follows each cadenza is consistent each time.

The Presto section [255] concluding the work should be appropriately adventurous. In

the spirit of the music, the director is encouraged not to sacrifice tempo here.

About the Composer:

David was born in Sydney in 1970 and moved to Brisbane in 1989. He holds a B.A.

Music and Grad. Dip Ed. from the Queensland University of Technology and Masters in

Music Studies from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. David has been

actively involved in Music Education in Queensland since 1991 working as a teacher,

conductor and composer. His musical appointments include; Director of Music at

Hillbrook Anglican School, Musical Director of the Brisbane Municipal Concert Band

and founding musical director of the Brisbane City Big Band. David has also appeared

regularly as a guest conductor for Queensland Young Conservatorium ensembles and

events.
